The best Android phone debuts so far this year and what's to come

a good year for foldable phones

The year 2023 is shaping up to be a fantastic one if you love Android smartphones. We've compiled the most significant news from the first half of the year, including the most significant phone launches, mobile platform rumors, and our future forecasts. The finest camera phones ever, the best foldable phones we've ever tested, and some of the newest phones that rank at the top of our best phones list have already been released.

Android is all about adaptability and experimenting with new ideas before others. This year hasn't brought us a ton of amazing new technology, but several Android advancements, like foldable displays and high-end phone cameras, are finally maturing and becoming products that are worthwhile to purchase.

Unfortunately for our US readers, Chinese phone manufacturers avoid the American market, therefore some of the most cutting-edge Android camera phones aren't available in the US. We're still talking about the latest sensor and lens advancements.

You like that American Huawei P60 Pro? You cannot have one, then.

The good news is that the current generation of foldable phones, including the Motorola Razr Plus and Google Pixel Fold, are not only accessible outside of the US, but you can also get one from a wireless carrier for a significant discount on one of these expensive handsets.

We recently received invitations from Samsung to attend its next Unpacked presentation, where we may expect to see the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, as well as perhaps some surprises. The year isn't done yet. Additionally, we anticipate that Google will release more Pixel devices this year, as well as another Razr from Motorola and perhaps a side Nothing Phone. The fact that it will be busy is one of the reasons we adore Android phones.

What were this year's top launches for Android phones as of 2023?

With the Pixel Fold, Google shows that it is serious about Android foldables.

Although the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra debuted in February (and rapidly rose to the top of our ranking of the best phones), the Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr Plus' simultaneous June debuts were what really got Android phone lovers excited.

Both phones were expected; Motorola had already introduced a few foldable Razr smartphones, and Google had been hyping its Pixel Fold for months. Surprisingly, both of these foldable phones are excellent and worthwhile purchases if you can afford their exorbitant price tags. The era of foldable phones accompanied with cautions and justifications may be coming to an end.

Incredibly innovative camera features have also been introduced by Chinese smartphone manufacturers Huawei, Oppo, and Honor. These phones are exceeding expectations for what a mobile camera can produce thanks to their large sensors, ultra-wide aperture lenses, and customization from reputable camera firms like Hasselblad. Although Oppo's OnePlus brand and the OnePlus 11 phone, which is also Hasselblad-tuned, provided us a sample this year, it is unfortunate that we cannot purchase them in the US.

Naturally, Android phones aren't just for wealthy people; they're available to everyone, and 2017 has been a good year for budget phones. With the Tensor G2 chipset in the Google Pixel 7a, you have all the power of the Pixel 7 Pro, and Motorola has had a great year with respectable mid-range devices like the Moto Edge 30 Fusion.

Finally, at the beginning of the year, a new Motorola Defy made by the Bullitt Group demonstrated the first generally accessible consumer satellite communications with a mobile phone. This Android phone can connect whenever you can't contact a mobile tower, even if you don't need assistance, unlike the iPhone, which can use a satellite for emergencies. Another Defy device that connects to satellites will provide other smartphones the same strength is available.

What launches can we anticipate for Android phones the remainder of 2023?

Since the most of the important phones have either been revealed or have been publicly leaked, we don't anticipate any surprises in the Android market for the remainder of 2023. We just know where this journey is heading, so that doesn't mean it won't be exciting.

The introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be our first stop, which will be in Seoul. The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event is scheduled for later this month, as it has already been revealed. Except for a somewhat larger display on the Z Flip 5's cover, we do not anticipate any significant upgrades to the foldable range.

In order to compete with the Google Pixel Fold and two Motorola Razr devices, Samsung needs to release some successful new foldables. The Motorola Razr Plus 2023 is currently available, but this year's base model Razr 2023 will be available for a considerably lower price. That phone also has a hip vegan leather finish and a bigger battery than its more expensive sister, so it might stand out on its own.

Soon, the Moto Razr will be available without the large cover display.

We recently learned that OnePlus is releasing its first foldable phone, and we anticipate the OnePlus Open, OnePlus Fold, or whatever name it ends up having, to appear before the year is over. Since OnePlus frequently releases flagship-killers, a foldable phone with a reasonable price and some required trade-offs may be in the works. It would be good to have a less expensive choice as the Pixel Fold is the most expensive folding device currently available.

If none of the above excite you, perhaps you require the Nothing Phone (2). Nothing has indicated that its upcoming phone, which will be launched on July 11, will be arriving soon. In fact, Nothing CEO Carl Pei requested that reviewers submit sample images on Twitter, so I can reveal that I currently have a Nothing Phone (2) in my possession and will shortly be posting a comprehensive review. The new Nothing Phone (2) will be the first product the company sells both domestically and internationally.
