The cold reaches of space were always unforgiving, but as I stared out the window into the dark void there came a deeper feeling of hopelessness that I've ever felt before. It's my third mission with this team and it hasnt exactly been a smooth ride so far. I'm still new, still a rookie, so I learn what I can, where I can, when I can so I dont end up holding everyone back or worse get anyone killed. Your team is only as strong as your weakest link. At least that's one of the mottos we learn in basic.
"Rookie! You alright? You're not scared are you?" Hopper asked laughing trying to poke fun at me. He was a skinny guy but tall and had that extra short military buzz cut with the biggest glasses you have ever seen hanging off his sharp featured face. He was always like that though. Always playing but when it came to tactical survailance or information gathering he could get you anything you need in less than a minute.
"No I'm good you know I hate flying is all" I respond while struggling to keep my composure.
"How can you be what you are and not like to fly? That's like literally the most common if not only way we travel to our missions.."
Hopper looks at me with a confused but funny expression as if to really question the logic, but first and foremost make fun of it.
"Dont ask me it's a genetic thing I cant control it." I shot back with a sarcastic tone as to underline tell him to bite me.
My family has a history for military service and it wasnt long after I graduated that I joined the same branch my family did. The UNSF (United Nations Special Forces) Only I had a unique gift for the paranormal that my family only saw once ever few generations so I got moved to a special unite....this unite. Long story short another one of those family traditions turned out to be accute motion sickness. We like our feet on the ground.
"Alright ladies listen up we're approaching the target landing zone now so let's get in and get out no stoppin to take a piss.....you hear me rookie?!" Master Sergeant Higgs shouted at me from the back of the plane.
I look up from the fist I had planted firmly on my mouth in a futile attempt to control the nausea and look back down as I reply. "Yes sir! In and out! Sir!"
We were on a rescue mission or at least that's what we were told. Massive explosion in a secret facility on a world whose coordinates were wiped from the archives and this facility holds the potential key to winning the war.
"Hey, try not to think too much about it. It will pass." Corporal Dennings sighs as he lays his heavy hand on my shoulder in an attempt to calm me down. He was a big guy pushing probably close to 300 ibs of pure muscle and witty one liners. His african-Jamaican decent just added to his flavor you could say.
Over to his right was Leutenant Greives. He was an older white guy maybe early 40's possibly 50's. Dont actually know how he even stays in active service being as old as he is but nobody has said anything yet and I dont think anyone has plans to. He still gives it everything he's got and can snipe the wings off a fly at 200 yards with his trusty, weird, rifle thing. I'm not even sure what that thing is it looks like something out of a steam-punk novel but it is more accurate that lazer eye surgery in his hands.
"As soon as your boots hit the ground I want a perimeter up in the next 60 seconds you got that?!" Master sergeant Higgs tells again as he hits the hatch door button opening the back of the aircraft.
The hatch door began to open as pressurized seals pop open and hydrolic screams are heard as the ramps drop to the surface. After we unloaded from the craft the target was in sight. A temple by the looks of it. Old , stone, deffinate signs of advanced yet primitive life. Deffinate signs of a fight too.
"What do we got people?" Higgs asks as he takes the lead and aims straight ahead into the shadowy darkness of the temple entrance. "Hopper!"
"Nothin boss we're green." Hopper declares while looking at his infrared perimeter scanner.
"Aw yeah no baddies in sight!" Dennings exclaims with a proud yet slight crazed smile on his face as he holds up his hip mounted minigun ready for action. Combing the forest line around the group waiting for a reason to pull the trigger.
It was quiet. Eerie even. There wasnt a sound to be heard, no birds, or other animals for that matter. Just the slight wind blowing through the thick leaves of the forest branches.
"Alright everyone keep sharp, Rookie! Your with me." Higgs motioned me to join him on point. "Could be anything here so find our target and that's get the hell out of here I'm not trying to miss my leave people." Higgs explains as he moves on toward the entrance with me at his back and the rest behind me.
"Base this is First Seargant Higgs we have arrived at the targets location. Proceeding forward now."
