Are We Choosing AI Over Human Connection?
Today we live in an interesting age where many people simply do not prefer to speak with other people. As a part-time customer service support specialist, I hear it all the time: “I’d rather just get an email, not a phone call.”
But what has happened to us that we no longer want to engage in real conversations? Isn’t it a little unsettling that human voices are being replaced with digital interactions? Have we reached a point where we’ve accepted going through the motions, avoiding connection, and choosing to speak only to AI?
The Frustration of Being “Too Real”
When I call people who have requested information, I sometimes notice immediate resistance. The moment they hear a live human voice, they’re frustrated. Almost as if they’re thinking, “How dare you be real?”
One person even told me they saw an ad claiming it’s better to cut out the middleman when doing business. The reasoning? By speaking to a person, part of their payment goes into that person’s pocket, which increases their out-of-pocket costs.
There are several troubling points here:
- Ads are actively encouraging people to eliminate human contact.
- People simultaneously complain that AI is taking jobs.
- Yet, in reality, many are willingly giving jobs away by embracing the idea that human interaction is a burden.
The Hidden Agenda Behind Avoiding People
What’s really going on? On one hand, AI is marketed as cost-saving, efficient, and faster than a human. On the other hand, people feel drained or inconvenienced by actual human connection.
But here’s the deeper issue:
- If we remove the human element from business and communication, all we’re left with is automation.
- When emotions and empathy are stripped away, interactions become transactions, not connections.
- Life itself starts to look less like an experience and more like a task list.
This subconscious pull to prefer talking to something that doesn’t reflect us back—an AI rather than another human being—is worth questioning. What are we really avoiding? Vulnerability? Patience? The discomfort of empathy?
When Life Becomes Just a Task
If everything becomes about efficiency, cost-cutting, and automation, then life loses its warmth. There’s no variation, no natural flow, no shared laughter or frustration. Just tasks. And here’s the hard truth: if jobs are disappearing, it’s not simply because AI is “taking” them. It’s because people are willingly trading emotional connection for convenience. I should say that again, but I think you get what is being said.
When emotions are removed, when the value of human interaction is dismissed, all that remains is a system that runs until the body leaves this earth. That may be efficient, but it isn’t living.
Final Thoughts
So, the real question is: What are you avoiding by choosing AI over people?
Whatever the larger agenda may be, it’s creating chaos within us—pushing us to make choices outside of what we truly want and need: authentic connection.
I’ll be exploring this topic further on my blog at www.graceguidance.com Because at the end of the day, AI may provide answers, but only humans can provide connection.
