People only know what they’ve been exposed to.
Beige was so sick. She was in the trailer puking her guts. She was sick from last night’s meal. Food poisoning from the Vietnamese shop. We could never anticipate the amount of attention that our study would eventually gain. This, however, was the first public speech that I would ever give in my life. Now, I had to give this presentation by myself. This was our chance to change the world and here I was, all alone.
I took my first steps towards the stage. Turning towards a thousand pairs of eyes. It felt as if they were gazing directly into my soul. Cameras and lights began blinding me from every direction. I felt like I could go blind because it was so bright. I had to power through because this was our chance, and I knew it. I couldn’t blow it. I turned to the audience and put on a smile. “Fake it till you make it.” That’s what Beige would say. I wish I had her confidence but her voice in the back of my head kept me from turning around and running from the stage.
I really wished that it were Beige up here instead of me. Her presence alone could light up more than just a room. Beige is the girl that’s way too hot to be as smart as she is. She’s even smarter than she is attractive. Everyone flocks to her. The thing about Beige is that no one can meet her standards. It’s not that she thinks she’s better, she just is.
I stand there for a moment. The sound of quiet coughing in the audience. I must begin. “What is our study you might ask? Mirror-verses. A mirror-verse is like walking through multiple universes using an electromagnetic field of mirrors. With the Mirror-verse we discovered that we were able to travel through different mirrors and go to any universe that you could imagine. Walking through a mirror, would lead you into a completely new world.”
I walked off the stage with my heart still pounding in my chest. I can’t believe I just did that! I found myself running back to the trailer because I couldn’t stand the thought of interacting with another human. I stuck my fingers in the doorknob and pulled it open. “Sasha! You did so good!” I was still so nervous I thought I was going to throw up myself. I shut the door behind me and sat down. I was not anticipating what would happen next.
A knock on the door made me jump into action. I opened the door to a mysterious man in a black tuxedo. “Hello.” “Very impressive speech young lady. May I have a quick word?” He looked inside the trailer. “Sure, come inside.” He introduced himself as The Doctor. Beige and I looked at him questionably. My first thought, “Why is a doctor in our trailer?”
“I want to offer you $20,000 to continue your research. I will supply everything you need and a place. I can tell you’re so passionate about this and I know that this can really change the world.” He smiled. “What do you say?” I turned to Beige. We both looked at each other in disbelief. Neither of us thought this would be happening. The little girls inside of us were secretly screaming.
I wasn’t so sure. “Doctor, you know this is just a theory? We’re at the beginning of the research so it’s impossible to say whether these other universes truly exist.” Doctor looked back at me with a smile, “Oh young one, I’m sure you’re much closer than you’ll ever know.”
Beige shut me down quicker than I had begun. “Come on, this is exactly what we’ve been working towards!” She looked at me then back at Doctor. “Yes!” Beige exclaimed. “Yes! We’ll take your offer!” Doctor opened his wallet, “Great, here’s my number.” He passed Beige a card with his information on it. “Give us a call Monday and we’ll set it all up.” He said as he walked down the steps of the trailer and stepped into his black car. His driver shut his door behind him and scurried off to the other side.
“Beige.” I said looking at her. She was so excited, gleaming with joy. She started squealing and jumping around. “Beige!” I repeated. “What!” “You know, 20,000 dollars is a lot of money but…” “but what?” Beige continued but this time curious as to what I had to say. “What about Sandra?” I asked.
We had a third partner. Her name was Sandra. She was a lot younger than both of us. Beige doesn’t like talking about it because Sandra went crazy from our study. Being exposed to the intensity of the new realities, she just couldn’t handle it. Unfortunately, Sandra is now sanctioned to a psychiatric ward in New Mexico. Unfortunately, there is likely no hope for her getting out anytime soon.
FAST FORWARD 2 YEARS…
Just then, a zap of lightning hit the ground! Smoke appeared and suddenly there was a man standing directly in front of us. He looked extremely haggard. His clothes were cut up and dirty. By the looks of it he had never bathed in his life. Although he didn’t have the stereotypical long white beard or a wand, there was something almost magical about him.
“What just happened?” Mex was shaky. Mex was a real nervous nelly who doesn’t know his attractiveness if it hit him in the head. His timid personality quickly ruins any chance for him to find a woman. Beige seems to be in love with him, but he’d never know it. He’s too blind to notice any woman’s feelings towards him. I’m surprised he doesn’t run away more often than he could. For a timid guy, he likes to stand his ground.
All three of us stood there flabbergasted. “Are you okay?” I asked the mysterious man who stood before us. He just looked at us. We didn’t know what to do so I decided to radio the Doctor. While the rest of us are still in school. The Doctor is the only one with an actual degree. He’s in his 40’s, and he has a wife and daughter. He is much older and wiser than the rest of us and he’s the reason we’re even this far.
I grabbed my little black book where I jot down new information. I keep my entire life’s research inside this one little book. I have been doing this research, studying the mirrors of universes, for years now but none of us have ever reached anything this close.
Where did this mysterious man come from and why did he refuse to speak to us? He kept looking at me, and it made me slightly nervous. I couldn’t help but think, “Am I dreaming?” It’s like a bridge had opened which allowed us to cross into different parts of the galaxy. A bridge from my world to his. Mirror-verses was becoming a reality. I just had one question, “Who was this haggard man of mystery?”
