Joonas Suotamo Named His Daughter After Chewbacca?

There's Been Some Confusion

By Culture SlatePublished 5 years ago 3 min read

When Joonas Suotamo announced the birth of his daughter on social media on February 28, 2020, the Star Wars fanbase exploded thinking that he named his daughter after his character, Chewbacca, our favorite Wookiee from the current Star Wars franchise. However, a few days later, Suotamo posted again saying that this was not actually the case.

Joonas Suotamo was the stand-in for Chewbacca’s original actor Peter Mayhew during the filming of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. He then officially took over the role finishing out the trilogy as Chewbacca in Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, as well as playing Chewbacca in the 2018 prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story. In an interview to People magazine he said:

"I didn’t believe in it until they called me and said I had the part. Sometimes I still wake up thinking, ‘Where am I? What is this dream?’ I’m doing Star Wars films, I still don’t quite believe it.”

And while he absolutely loves the fact that he has the role of Chewbacca, he is not so big a fan as to name his daughter after the role that he loves. However, Suotamo’s birth announcement on his Twitter is still one of the most sweet and loving birth announcements out there. The 33-year-old actor announced on Twitter that he and his wife, Milla Pohjasvaara, welcomed a baby girl into their family. Joonas Suotamo announced it on February 28, 2020, in the following tweet:

“We have some exciting news! We were blessed to welcome the newest member of our family! Our little princess (or senator, or general, or whatever she wants to be!) was born this week and is doing great. Welcome to the world Princess Bacca!"

Baby Bacca is pictured in her crib asleep and dressed in an adorable pink onesie, with some very comfy looking blankets with pictures of bears, giraffes, and zebras. She is Joonas and Milla’s second child. They also have a one-year-old son named Aatos. The former professional basketball player added:

“He is gonna have to get used to there being two little ones in the house now. So far he is doing well with it, and we expect him to grow up to be a great big brother.”

Fans, of course, thought that Suotamo named his daughter after Chewbacca. However, a day later, Suotamo announced on Twitter that this was actually not the case. In a post with yet another gorgeous photo of his daughter, Suotamo added: “And just to clarify, Babybacca #2 aka Princess Bacca has not yet been named. We’re just enjoying the moment right now!”

“Bacca” seems to be a nickname that Joonas and Milla have for their children, because in an Instagram post right before his daughter was born, Suotamo captioned a picture of his son Aatos with a red stormtrooper helmet and said: "While technically true, I don’t think being ‘too short for a stormtrooper’ ever really applied to Babybacca (soon to be big brother ‘bacca!)"

So, before his daughter was born, his son was also Babybacca. Which clears up the confusion. It is just an adorable nickname that Joonas and Milla give to their beautiful children.
