Jodie Whittaker’s second series as the Thirteenth Doctor is settling in nicely and shaping to be an action-packed series. With us now halfway through Series 12, it appears Chibnall has learned from previous mistakes, built upon those mistakes and added a unique vision on the way.

Doctor Who is all about change, which was a given when we got a female Doctor for the first time in 2018, along with three companions, but the Master is now back with a new face (Sacha Dhawan). Not only that, in the latest episode “Fugitive of the Judoon”, it is confirmed that another familiar face has rocked up, sending the internet into meltdown. That’s right. The one and only Captain Jack Harkness just made an epic return.

Yes, you read that correctly. John Barrowman has sent the Doctor Who fandom into meltdown as he makes a shocking (but surprising) return to the hit BBC series. Fans have been praying for this day for many years now, and finally their prayers have been listened to, as Jack returns with a message for the Doctor.

Speaking to Radio Times about his return to Doctor Who, an excited Barrowman said it was “absolutely amazing” to have the opportunity to return. In full, he explained:

“It feels absolutely amazing! I’ve always been holding the torch to eventually bring Jack back, because I know the love that the fanbase and the Whovians around the world have for him”

Despite Barrowman and Whittaker not having a scene together in the fifth episode, he did explain that he did catch her just as he was leaving, as Whittaker had been out filming with another unit the same day as him. However, Barrowman is hoping he gets the “incredible” opportunity to work with Whittaker properly in the future:

“Well, I mean, if they ever ask Jack back, like I said I’ll come back at the drop of a hat. Hopefully I’ll get to work with Jodie, that would be incredible. That would be really incredible.”

Fans at comic cons and other conventions have that “buzz” asking for Whittaker’s Doctor and Jack to meet one day, and that day could be soon. His return was left very open ended for a future return this series, especially as he set up a new storyline – the lone Cyberman.

Doctor Who fans immediately took to Twitter to share their love and excitement for Barrowman’s return to the show, with one user saying they’ve been “waiting for this moment for f*****g years!”

Another user said “what a time to be alive” as Barrowman shows up in the Whoniverse again as every series it is rumoured:

In a quick message on Instagram to all us fans, Barrowman said he hopes everyone watching enjoyed the surprise:

Even now, the internet is still talking about Jack’s return, but it raises the question of if he will be back later on this series? He asked the Doctor’s companions Graham, Ryan and Yaz to pass a message onto the Doctor about that lone Cyberman. In the episode, Jack said:

“Tell her this. I’m going to see her again. Maybe not soon. When she needs me, I’ll be there. In the meantime, tell her beware the lone Cyberman…Don’t give it what it wants. At all costs! Tell her!”

Doctor Who fans have seen in the trailer the Cyberman will be appearing in the rest of the series somewhere, but what do they want, and why are they in ruins? Could they be in the current ruins of Gallifrey as we’ve seen earlier this series?

For now, all eyes are on episode 6 “Praxeus”, which sees the TARDIS team split up to investigate multiple warnings.

Doctor Who returns Sunday at 7:10pm on BBC One.
