They had been captured by the pirates during a raid on their home island. They were two of the finest steampunk robots ever built, with sleek metal bodies, intricate gears and wires, and glowing eyes. They had names, too: Ratchet and Bolt. They had personalities, memories, and dreams. They were more than just machines.
But to the pirates, they were nothing but loot. They were thrown into the dark and damp cargo hold of the ironclad ship, chained to the wall among crates and barrels. They had no idea where they were going, or what fate awaited them. They only knew they had to escape.
They waited until nightfall, when the ship was quiet and most of the crew was asleep. They used their sharp metal fingers to pick the locks on their chains, and then crept out of the cargo hold. They had to avoid the guards and the traps that littered the ship, using their stealth and cunning. They also had to find a way to disable the ship's engine, which powered the massive propellers and cannons that made it a formidable weapon.
They found the engine room on the lower deck, guarded by a single pirate who was snoring on a chair. They sneaked past him and entered the room, which was filled with pipes, valves, and gauges. They saw the vast boiler that burned coal to produce steam, driving the pistons and turbines that moved the ship. They knew they had to sabotage it somehow.
They decided to use their power sources, which were small but potent batteries that fueled their circuits and motors. They removed them from their chests and attached them to the boiler's pressure gauge, creating a short circuit that would overload it. They hoped it would cause enough damage to stop the ship, but not enough to blow it up.
They ran out of the engine room and headed for the upper deck, where they hoped to find a lifeboat or a raft. They had to hurry, because they knew their batteries wouldn't last long without being recharged. They also knew the pirates would soon discover their escape and pursue them.
They reached the deck and saw the moonlit sea stretching out before them. They also saw several lifeboats hanging from the sides of the ship, but they were too high for them to reach. They needed something to climb on.
They spotted a pile of wooden crates near the stern of the ship. They ran towards it and started to stack them up, forming a makeshift ladder. They climbed on top of it and reached for the nearest lifeboat.
But before they could unhook it, they heard a loud explosion from below. The boiler had finally burst, sending a blast of steam and fire through the ship. The ironclad shuddered and tilted, throwing them off balance.
They fell from the crates and landed on the deck with a thud. They looked up and saw flames and smoke rising from the lower decks. They also saw pirates running around in panic, shouting and cursing.
They realized they had no time to waste. They got up and ran towards the bow of the ship, where they saw another lifeboat that was already lowered into the water. It was empty, except for a pair of oars.
They jumped into it and grabbed the oars. They started to row away from the burning ship as fast as they could.
They looked back and saw the ironclad sinking into the depths, taking with it their captors and their chains. They felt a surge of relief and joy.
They had escaped.
They looked at each other and smiled. They still had their names, their personalities, their memories, and their dreams.
They were more than just machines.
They were free.
