Nolan woke up confused and walked slowly into his mom's room. His mom worked hard so he was hesitant to wake her. “Mommy”, Nolan said as he gently shook his mom. Nolan’s mom popped her eyes open, she usually slept light to listen just in case one of her children needed her. “Yes baby, did you have another nightmare?” Nolan climbed in bed next to his mom. He began to explain his dream so his mom could help him not be so confused.
There was a fairy who lived in the woods all alone, she had been alone so long that even if she’d ever had a name it had been forgotten by now. She flew through looking for fruit trees that hadn’t be chopped down or which fruit hadn’t gone rotten. The fairy was very playful and so excited whenever she saw a squirrel or bird that would make time from it’s busy day to play. She never grew bored yet at times she’d have this empty feeling inside and didn’t quick knowing what it was. It was a feeling of being lonely, missing companionship and just having someone near. The feeling inside the fairy didn’t last long as she was naturally cheerful and positive.
A little boy walked barefoot through the woods looking around in amazement. He had never been to such a place because he lived in a city with very few woods. The boy came across an orange tree that was just his height, what a sight it was for him because where he lived mostly everything was too tall or too high for him to reach alone. He begin to peel the orange when he hears a fluttering sound, looking around he saw no one there. Then he felt a tickle near his hair, he turned his head slowly, and oh wow a fairy was there. The fairy smiled at the boy “What are you” she asked.
“My name is Nolan” the boy said as he stared sideways at the wings and how small the creature was. Nolan was confused to see something so tiny that looked like a person yet had wings. He asked the fairy for her name. “My name is no name, I have no name” said the fairy. The boy finished peeling the orange and offered a slice to the fairy, they sat and ate oranges and played together until the boy just vanished instantly leaving the fairy back alone and wondering where he went.
Nolan’s mom sat attentively listening to the story and when nothing was finished she gave him a little black book. He asked his mom what the book was for, she replied “next time you see the fairy give her the book.” She hugged her son, kissed his check and gently rocked him back to sleep. When the boy was sound asleep, his mom carried him back to his bed and tucked him in. She then went back into her own bed and went to sleep also.
Nolan appeared back in the woods only this time he went to call out for the fairy with no name. “Fairy no name, he whispered softly yet in a way he thought she’d hear. Out popped the fairy flowing down from her favorite tree. She flew down and landed on Nolan’s shoulder, “you disappeared” she said “I searched and couldn’t find you. “I woke up Nolan said and I was back in my bed” the fairy looked confused because she had no idea what a bed was. Nolan reached out his hand and in it was the little black book his mom had gave him. “What’s that?” the fairy asked, “it’s a book, you write in it” Nolan said. The fairy didn’t know what writing was so she opened the book and shook her wings. Thick sparkling pink glitter fell onto the pages and the book and she closed it up and gave it back to Nolan.
Nolan’s mom woke up and went to her sons bed to wake him and get him ready for their day. Nolan woke up and wiped his eyes then smiled at his mom and handed her the book she’d given him. Nolan’s mom grabbed the book and said “it’s for you to write out your dreams son so you can keep track of them.” She opened the book and looked inside, the book was full of beautiful shiny glitter. “Where’d you get glitter from, did you wake up after I put you in bed?” His mom asked confused because there was no glitter in their home, only crayons, books and toys. Nolan smiled big at his mom and said, “it came from the fairy’s wings from my dream!” His mom was shocked so she pulled the covers and looked at her son’s feet, they looked as if he’d been playing in dirt. She gave him a bath and got him dressed and ready for their day.
Nolan was riding in the car and looking out the window, his mom was taking him to his grandmother’s home. The home was in the country so it was a lot of scenery and he was excited. As they drove he saw some woods that looked like the woods from his dream. Nolan got excited, too excited to get his words out so he pointed. His mom pulled the car over to see what he wanted to get to that had him so excited. Nolan jumped out the car and ran into the woods. His mom panicked and immediately ran behind him, the woods were so easy to get lost in and so easy to get hurt. Nolan’s mom found him standing in front of a huge tree, the biggest tree she’d ever seen. The tree had 6 numbers on it, she pulled the little black book and a pen from her pocket and wrote down the numbers. Nolan called and called for the fairy with no name yet she never appeared.
Nolan sat with his grandmother and explained why he was sad, he told her he made a fairy friend in his dream. He also explained how he found her favorite tree while he was awake yet the fairy never came out. Nolan’s mom told her mother about the boys dirty feet and told her that the tree had numbers on it. Nolan’s grandmother grinned at her daughter and grandson and said “maybe you should use the numbers they’ll bring you luck.” Nolan’s mom didn’t know what her mother went so she just agreed then enjoyed the rest of their tome there before they got back into the car and headed home.
As they drove home, Nolan’s mom saw a lotto billboard on the side of the road, she thought about the dream her son had and the numbers she had seen on the tree. She found the nearest gas station because she had to stop for gas anyway so she decided to play the numbers as it was the last day to win the lotto on the billboard. Nolan went into the store with his mom and when he say the cashier he noticed she looked like a human sized older version of the fairy he’d seen is his dream. He didn’t tell his mom though because he wanted to dream again and see the fairy first. He wanted to asked her about her family and how she ended up all alone.
Nolan went to sleep for the next 3 days yet had no dreams of the fairy. He began to think she was gone and he just wouldn’t see her again. Nolan heard his mom scream on the fourth morning of not seeing the fairy, so he ran to her to see what was going on. Nolan’s mom had won $20,000 from the numbers she’d played from the tree and was ecstatic. She hugged Nolan and said “your fairy friend was magical after all. Nolan wasn’t so sad anymore to see his mom with so much joy but deep inside he still yearned to see his fairy friend again.
