You Can Hide Information In Time

Making the perfect security system. Physicists have worked to pull time apart, creating a gap into which they can insert a secret message. An outsider observer is left clueless- unable to see a message that is now hidden inside the very fabric of time.

Hiding the information in the fabric of time is a metaphorical concept used in science fiction to embed information within the very structure of spacetime, essentially making it invisible and accessible only through specific methods.

The mind-bending theory behind 'time cloaking' and in 2012, the theory became reality. Time cloaking is about playing with the speed of light. Think about it, when the star die it happened a long time ago but now we can see it because the light has reached us.

In the vacuum of space the lights travel 1 billion kilometer per hour. For now, nothing in the universe move faster than light. Scientist have developed technology that can manipulate the speed of light in optical fibres. They can interfere with light's individual particles or photon.

When it is trapped in optical fibers, light moves more slowly- generally about 0.7 billion kilometers per hour. Let's meet someone who has expertise in the field. Martin McCall is a professor at the Imperial College London and his colleague dreamed up the idea of time cloaks in 2010.

The first practical demonstration of the idea of using light in optical fibers rather than cars on the highway came in 2012. The following year, an updated version of the technology opened up a gap in the stream of light large enough to conceal a usable chunk of information an email message, for instance.

If the gap is closed after the message has been inserted, an observer further along the optical fiber won't be able to see it. But if someone else even further down the optical fiber opened up the gap again, the message would become readable once more. Time clocks aren't the only way that physics can help with online security. Some of the strange quantum properties of subatomic particles could find a role in making networks more secure, too- an idea that moved one step closer to reality with the launch of the first quantum communications satellite in 2016.

Fun Fact: The internet is built on a network of optical fibers, which are ideal for time cloaking.
