Why Did Death Note Gain Popularity?

By Eris GreyratPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Death Note one of the finest arts in anime. It's also arguably one of those anime that makes the anime so much popular around the globe. So the question is why the anime is so popular? Let's find out about this.

Before jumping into the main discussion let me explain the storyline. It'll be spoiler-free so you can read it even if you have not watched the anime or you're willing to watch it, you can read this and consider it as a little review.

Death Note Storyline

The story starts with Light Yagami, a super-intelligent high schoolboy. One day he finds a notebook in his school and decides to bring it home. The name written on the notebook is Death Note. He reads the instructions and doesn't believe them. At the same time, an unemployed man takes some children as hostages and starts demanding some money. Light Yagami decides to test the notebook on him. He gets completely shocked after discovering that the notebook actually works. After that Light Yagami decides to kill all criminals and become the God of the world. A team of detectives tries to catch him. World's Number one detective named 'L' tries to catch him along with his team. So that's the story about.

Why Death Note is so popular?

Death Note anime came in 2006. It has a total of 37 episodes. If you would notice, this anime came after some popular anime like Dragon Ball Series and Naruto. These two anime already set the platform for other anime. However, people still don't watch anime that much. It changes when Death Note releases. The anime sets the fire in the community. It became popular after only a few episodes of it. Even Netflix licensed this anime after seeing the success. Although big anime like Dragon Ball and naruto set the platform, Death Note anime came with a unique concept other than fighting and getting more powerful than your opponent. This attracts those people who have wanted a good story without any action or fighting scenes. Death Note English dub is also available to watch. Because of this, this anime gained more popularity than expected.

The unique concept of the show isn't the key factor to be so popular in anime. There are several reasons as well. When the story starts, it shows an intelligent student who is bored with his current life. He always sees news about crimes and arrests. It leads him to think that he can be the God of the world by using the notebook. A detective has been made to catch. The main character light is also a son of a detective. So he almost tackles all the plans and initiatives from the team. This anime is popular because of the way they put the story in the anime.

Later there are multiple death notes that appear in further episodes. The story becomes more complex. In spite of this situation, the story flows smoothly. There are other characters as well who are killing people on behalf of Light Yagami. The detective is smart enough to suspect them but in the end, they fail to catch them. Later on, another detective team also tries to catch him and they succeed this team. They cornered Light and the story ends with the death of Light Yagami.

Conclusion

Basically, this story shows what happens when someone tries to take justice into their own hands. Plus the detective vibe of this show made this clear that the show has been well written. On the other side, Light Yagami is only 17 years old student. Because of this, you may sense a little immaturity from him. The ideas and the actions that are being taken from both sides are pretty unpredictable. If you try to predict their next move, you will see you're wrong. That's the specialty of this show. It's totally unpredictable. The audience can't even think about what will happen next.
