Building meaningful relationships

Relationships should be built to learn and gain from.

By Akinbiyi Esther Temitope Published 3 years ago 3 min read

Hi there! Building meaningful relationships is an important part of life. Whether it's with friends, family, or romantic partners, forming genuine connections with other people can enhance our well-being and provide a sense of belonging. Relationships create a sense of belonging and purpose through deeper connection.

How do we determine relationships that are meaningful? Meaningful relationships are those that are deemed significant and include mutual respect, trust, interest, positive regard and making the other person feel valued. The key to making these relationships grow involves building on elements of honesty and finding commonalities to help create that lasting foundation. It is important to build on these relationships that are significant to you because they will lower depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as lessen any sense of loneliness in your life.

Some of the benefits of lasting relationships are the feelings of being seen and valued, improving mood and sense of self-worth, feeling expression, building support, and the release of chemicals in your brain such as dopamine and endorphins. Unfortunately, people get caught up with the business of their own lives, and it might be harder to maintain these relationships in person. Another way to help build upon your relationships and strengthen your communication is through virtual platforms, active listening and reaching out to your friends.

Here are a few tips that may be helpful in building meaningful relationships:

1. Show genuine interest: One of the most important things you can do is to show genuine interest in the person you're trying to connect with. Ask them questions, and listen to their answers attentively. Show empathy and understanding, and try to see things from their perspective.

2. Be yourself: Authenticity is key in building meaningful relationships. Don't try to be someone you're not, or pretend to have interests that you don't have. Be true to who you are, and you're more likely to form connections with people who appreciate you for who you are.

3. Communicate openly and honestly: Open and honest communication is essential in any relationship. Be clear about your needs and boundaries, and encourage the other person to do the same. This will help you develop trust and respect for each other.

4. Spend quality time together: Spending time together is important for building meaningful relationships. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - a simple coffee date or a walk in the park can be just as meaningful as an expensive night out. The important thing is that you're present and engaged with each other.

5. Be supportive: Being supportive is one of the most important things you can do in a relationship. Celebrate successes, offer encouragement during difficult times, and be a shoulder to lean on when needed. This will help you build a deeper connection with the other person and strengthen your relationship over time.

There are several places where you can find meaningful relationships with people. Here are a few more options to find meaningful relationships with people:

1. Attend social events or gatherings with friends or co-workers. This can be a great way to meet new people who share similar interests.

2. Volunteer for a cause that you are passionate about. Not only will you be doing good for your community, but you may also meet like-minded individuals who care about the same issues.

3. Join a sports team or fitness group. This can be a great way to bond with people over a common activity, and it can be a fun way to stay active and healthy.

4. Attend religious or spiritual services with a community that you feel comfortable in. You may connect with others who share similar beliefs and values.

Remember, finding meaningful relationships takes time and effort, so don't be discouraged if it takes a while to find the right fit. Keep an open mind and stay true to yourself.
