Becoming Great: A Biblical Perspective

God’s definition of greatness is different from the world’s. In Scripture, greatness is tied to character, faithfulness, and service, not personal ambition, fame, or status. When we align our lives with God's perspective, we step into a greatness that is eternal.

1. Greatness Begins with Humility

What the World Says:

The world often teaches that greatness is about being on top—being admired, respected, and in control.

What God Says:

In God's kingdom, the way up is down. Jesus taught and modeled humility consistently.

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

— Matthew 23:12

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus… he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death.”

— Philippians 2:5–8

Practical Steps to Grow in Humility:

Serve without recognition—let your good works be between you and God.

Admit when you're wrong. Say sorry quickly and forgive easily.

Practice gratitude—pride focuses on what we deserve, humility thanks God for what we receive.

Bible Example:

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet (John 13), including Judas'. That’s the level of humility God calls us to.

2. Serving Others is the Path to Greatness

Jesus taught that serving others is the hallmark of a great life.

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

— Matthew 20:26

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

— Mark 10:45

Real Greatness Is Found In:

Encouraging others behind the scenes.

Being generous without expecting anything in return.

Taking on tasks others avoid—not for applause but for love.

Bible Example:

Dorcas (Tabitha) in Acts 9:36–42 was known for her acts of kindness and charity. When she died, the widows showed Peter the clothes she had made for them. She was raised from the dead—not because she was famous—but because of the quiet impact she made.

3. Obedience Elevates You

God honors obedience. You don’t need to be the most talented, the most educated, or the most popular. God is looking for someone who will say “yes” to Him.

“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.”

— Isaiah 1:19

“To obey is better than sacrifice.”

— 1 Samuel 15:22

Keys to Obedience:

Daily surrender: Start your day asking God, “What do You want from me today?”

Let go of outcomes: Obey even when you don’t understand where it’s going.

Stay faithful: Be consistent in what God asked of you—no matter how small it seems.

Bible Example:

Noah obeyed God by building the ark for years, even though rain had never fallen. His obedience saved humanity.

4. A Great Heart is One After God’s Heart

God isn’t impressed by appearances; He looks at the heart.

“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

— 1 Samuel 16:7

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

— Matthew 5:8

Characteristics of a Great Heart:

Repentant: Like David, when we fall, we return to God (Psalm 51).

Worshipful: A heart of worship pleases God more than any performance.

God-focused: Seeking God's presence above His blessings.

Bible Example:

David was called a man after God's heart not because he was perfect, but because he continually pursued God.

5. Endurance and Faith Bring Heavenly Rewards

Greatness also means staying the course. Many start well, but few finish well. God calls us to be faithful until the end.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest.”

— Galatians 6:9

“He who endures to the end shall be saved.”

— Matthew 24:13

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

— 2 Timothy 4:7

Staying Faithful Means:

Keep showing up, even when you feel unseen.

Trusting God's timing when results are slow.

Believing His promises even in the face of opposition.

Bible Example:

Joseph endured betrayal, false accusation, and prison—but remained faithful. God raised him to become second-in-command in Egypt (Genesis 41).

Conclusion: Seeking God's Kind of Greatness

Greatness in God’s eyes is not a destination—it’s a way of life. It’s the small daily decisions to choose:

Humility over pride

Service over status

Obedience over personal gain

Faithfulness over fame

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

— Matthew 6:33

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”

— Matthew 25:21

This is greatness: to live a life pleasing to God, walking in love, and becoming more like Jesus every day.
