Eddie laid in his hospital bed with more than 15 knife wounds all over his body, mostly to his chest. All seven children gathered around him in tears. Doctors called them in after a minister performed his last rights. His girlfriend was in the parking lot but was banned from entering the hospital. It was all her doing that put Eddie into the predicament he was in. Then, at the moment when things, monitors, wires, and such were being taken off one by one Eddie awakened. First, the thing he said was: "Neecy where are you? Why did you do this to me? You can have most of my Social Security check just leave me enough so that I can buy some groceries."

His adult children all seven of them could not believe what they were hearing. They were all crying deeply just a moment ago. His eldest son groaned and walked out of the hospital room shaking his head visibly shaken and angry. He was a successful business owner. They were all successful. A doctor, two lawyers, two teachers, and a restauranteur. They all left Eddie's side one by one except for Jeanie. She stayed and offered him comfort. She could hardly speak. She said, "Neecy is not allowed into the hospital because she tried to kill you! The police are outside your door ready for your statement because they're going to arrest her."

"No, Jeanie don't have them do that. No! No! Noooo, I don't want that!" His voice was shaky as he was still very weak and could barely mouth the words. In fact, he wouldn't press charges. All the children were frustrated and tried to convince him, but there was nothing that would change his mind.

It took another ten days for Eddie to recuperate in the hospital. He went to stay with Jeanie while he was on the mend. Neecy kept calling the family wanting to speak to Eddie. The family kept her away, but every chance he would get, he would secretly call her and tell her he soon would be going to his home. Six weeks later, he went back home. Although he promised his kids he would not see Neecy, again, that was not in his plans.

When he got home, he settled himself into his familiar comforts. Jeanie and Deborah took turns cooking and cleaning. All the kids had a family meeting and through all their anger and pain they decided their father was a grown man and they had to let him go, but not without an agreement that an assessment and safety check were completed through the police and domestic violence special unit.

The moment Jeanie and Deborah left their father's home, Neecy showed up within 15 minutes' time. She was all dolled up with her skinny little arse and a welcomed yet terrifying sight to the old man. Though before the incident, Eddie got around pretty well and was in much better shape than most 67-year-old men his age. But now, he was struck down. His recovery was slow. The wounds on his chest were the last healing.

Still, Eddie loved Neecy in his own way. He remembered how lonely he was after his wife of 35 years died of cancer. Martha was his heart. Martha was a great mom and raised all the children properly. All the children loved their mother and father with pride and gratitude. None of the children had any problems socially in school largely because friends or foes never messed with any of them due to their father being a heavyweight champion. He never went on to win the World Champion title, but still, he won a lot of fights no less.

Neecy settled herself down into the kitchen chair and ate of the mac and cheese, catfish, and greens Eddie's daughters made for him. She didn't eat much, and she knew just what to say to him. She apologized profusely stating she was out of her mind due to the crack her ex-boyfriend had given to her by mistake. Carl was a drug pusher and Neecy tried to break it off with him, but he had his ways.

Eddie was dressed in his Sunday best comfortable bowling-style shirt. He looked like a cross between Justice Clarence Thomas and Fred Sanford. Neecy shimmied herself behind Eddie. She gently and skillfully rubbed Eddie's back and shoulders getting all the knots and kinks out. He relaxed as much as possible, but he felt the tension in his heart.

He took a couple of pills as it was nearly 6 PM and it was time to take them. Neecy said, "Eddie, Boo hey, I'm so sorry. (tears flowed in gobs and Eddie's tears flowed too) Carl gave me some crack when he said it was Coke… I didn't know what I was doing. But, I think I have it under control now."

Eddie responded, "Marth… Neecy, I don't know what to do you know I love you, but my kids and all. You are just no good for me. I thought you were going to bust it up with Carl. Now you're back with him. It hurts me!"

Neecy said, "You know Carl said he would kill me if I left him, so I was trying to ease out of it. He begged me to have some Coke and champagne after his big hit for old times sake. "Boo, Eddie, you know it's you I really love. ugh… I'm so sorry."

Neecy looked nice in her snug black velvet top which accentuated her B cup breasts. She was all skin and bones though. Her satin emerald green skirt fit like a tightly fastened girdle. All her curves were accentuated just right. And, she smelled so good. A mixture of spices and citrus.

Somehow the two ended up in the bedroom as Eddie needed to lie down as he was getting dizzy. Neecy went to the bathroom to freshen up and took out the black lacy negligee she had in her purse. She came out of the bathroom a vision of loveliness her black wig curls lay just right. She looked a lot like Halle Berry, but not quite. Her teeth were moving in her mouth. She once had nice teeth with a slight overbite, but now some of her teeth were turning grey. And, her once beautiful chocolate skin had acne.

Eddie laid on the bed woozy and half-asleep. He glanced at Neecy and thought he saw Martha. He squinted trying to see better and he could see it was really Neecy after all. God, he missed Martha. It was Martha that brought him comfort and love like no other. And, when they made love, Eddie knew he was a much-loved man.

He did his best to focus on Neecy though. Neecy skillfully undid his belt and loosened his zippered pants. They were now off. She sneaked her hands under his shirt and gently rubbed his shoulders and chest the way she knew he liked. But, Eddie became uncomfortable as his wounds just below his heart were still sensitive. Neecy's manicured nails brushed along the crevices of the wound sending electric shock waves through Eddie's entire body.

Neecy then, kissed Eddie's chest ever so gently going down towards his penis which for some reason was flaccid. She thought Eddie was getting excited, but she was wrong. He usually was hard by this point. She took his manhood into her mouth and caressed it with her mouth as she relaxed her throat as he was becoming firmer. He went further down her throat erect as she managed to get him there. He glanced at her from his lying position and he saw Martha, instead. His eyes were moist with tears. He took a second look and it was Neecy that he saw. She was so light that he barely felt her go down on him as she placed his cock into her pussy. She motioned up at down trying to pleasure herself, but to no avail as he was unable to keep his erection. Eddie now felt sick. He wasn't his usual self. He asked Neecy to stop as it was of no use.

Neecy became angry but tried not to show it. She felt panicked as after all her words and loving she now knew she hadn't convinced him at all.

What Neecy didn't know was that Eddie cared for her even though he no longer believed her lies. He knew she was all he had left in his life. He resigned himself to whatever happened. He resigned himself to whatever time he had left on this earth. He just wanted Neecy at his side come what may.

A couple of months had passed and Eddie's health was improving. Yet, for some reason, he was having problems keeping tabs on his medications. It was all Neecy's doing. She liked having Eddie a little off-kilter. Sometimes she mixed the pills up. Sometimes some of them were missing.

Eddie continued to call his children often asking them for money as he was always short. And they obliged. The trouble was he asked each of them for a hundred smackers here a hundred smackers there. It was adding up. The family tried not to interfere with his personal life, but it wasn't helping any. Neecy was taking all of his pension and Social Security checks and cashing them. Despite Eddie's protests to leave some for a little food and for the copays on his medications, she took it all. Things were getting much worse. Neecy carried a blade with her all the time. She often threatened him.

Eddie became scared of her. Once a big-time boxer who went rounds with Fraiser, he just couldn't hit Neecy or belt her one. His fists were considered lethal weapons. It was just not his way. But, the family was fed up. The investigators were called and there was enough evidence there to show that Eddie was in extreme danger.

Jeanie began to cry as she told me over the phone how her brothers and sisters were ashamed of their very beloved father. Neighbors were gossiping, Eddie's health was worsening. Everything he ever worked for was gone.

Jeanie began to sob. "My father is not the man he once was. And, we're afraid Neecy is going to kill him. My father was a good man he was always there for us, but since our mother died, he became very lonely. So we looked the other way. We helped him financially, even. But, Neecy almost killed him! And, he wouldn't press charges. He begged us not to get involved."

I went to meet Eddie at his home the very next day. It was a beautiful day. It was sunny and all the trees were lush green. He lived on an older street. His home was painted yellow and appeared cheery on the outside. The police deputy met with me across the street in the parking lot near the home.

The deputy was an ex-marine over seven feet tall and wearing a tan uniform all crisply ironed and neat. His hat was like that which the mounties wear. He had a mustache and his skin was medium brown. He reminded me of a huge, delicious, king-sized Reece's peanut butter cup chocolate bar. I felt unafraid at his side. He was like this huge lumberjack-type man.

He said, "Ms. you let me go into the house first. I'll make sure it's safe for you. Then, you wait and I'll come and get you." I agreed.

When deputy Jackson came out, he told me it wasn't safe. He said, "Ms. I don't think the house is safe. She may still be hiding in there. But, Eddie is there. He'll talk with you. He doesn't seem well. So be very careful. I'll be around."

I knocked on the door and Eddie yelled for me to come in which I did. The home was built in the 50s. The inside was kept up pretty well. Eddie was in the kitchen sitting at a table. He asked, "Ms. Lucy I need to go to the store. Would you, please, go with me? It's just a couple of blocks away."

I agreed. He got into his new Cadillac and I got in, too. We sat there for a moment. "Ms. Lucy would you please help me with my leg. I can't seem to get it into the car?" So I got out and went around onto the driver's side and lifted his edema leg into his car. He put the radio on and started the car.

And, whoosh we were off at 50 mph in 30 seconds flat. "Eddie you need to slow down now!" We were on a residential street heading toward traffic.

"Ms. Lucy, I can't slow down."

"Why not?" I asked

To which he replied, "I can't get my foot off the gas." Somehow, by the grace of God alone, we missed the traffic through two lights along the bending road. We ended up going back to his home as he couldn't stop and he couldn't get out of the car. We hit the curb and went onto the grass just shy of a tree. We stopped.

Back at Eddie's house, Deputy Jackson was there. We left and talked in the parking lot. Jackson said that Neecy was hiding in the home and she had a long knife. He spoke with her and told her he was watching her. She then ran from home. He advised that Eddie was in real danger. I filed the paperwork for the circuit court and went with Jackson to get the police report signed off with his Sargeant. The Sargeant was drinking while having his lunch and didn't want to be bothered. But, he eventually gave the okay and signed the paperwork.

While Eddie and Neecy parted ways for the evening with the promise that she would come and vouch for Eddie and his ability to handle his finances, Carl was devising a way to keep Neecy's leash shorter. He was angry at Neecy for going outta control on the crack. It wasn't his fault; it was her fault for giving in to him and crack. His supply of crack was endless, but he would make Neecy pay ever so dearly for it. And then the supply got dried out. There was a huge bust nearby, and the DEA was hot on big dealers' trails to confiscate all the crack; they were successful in getting big shipments and scores of money with it.

That was okay with Carl. He had cookers in the rural areas surrounding the city. He knew that Neecy would not stray far from his crib. His cruelty knew no bounds as he juiced her of every penny she had. Sometimes, he would do it for the pure enjoyment of seeing her deteriorate.

Neecy showed up at his crib with half the money from Eddie's recent social security check. Neecy was out of her mind. Neecy considered it a success if she could stay away from Carl and crack for 3 to 4 days. As of recent, she was clear for five days. Neecy's self-care was dwindling. Although she wore tight shorts and slinky little tops, her rib bones protruded under her thin skin. She lost a couple of teeth. Her acne was getting much worse. She felt really fatigued, yet, edgy at the same time.

Carl would take care of all that. She tried to calm herself as he prepped her bowl for her. She took a hit and felt the euphoria gradually entrap her being. It was a false euphoria, but Neecy gave in regardless. Carl skimmed the first four hundred dollars and put it in his bedside drawer. And left the remaining money on the chair. Maybe he would order Jet's deep dish BBQ chicken pizza. Neecy felt high as like one of marijuana, but intense pleasure and honing in on the clarity which cocaine gave. She was ready for the night. She wasn't hungry.

She was unable to sleep the night before, and here it was the morning of Eddie's court hearing. She washed and brushed her teeth. They were hurting. She would wear what she called her Church Sunday best clothing. She put on the Satin green skirt that hugged her hips like a vice grip; she wore her black nylon blouse, which now was really loose on her, and the green suit jacket. She hadn't realized, but she had laid on her make-up thick. The accentuated false eyelashes made her out to look more like the last night hooker. ChurcShe wore her green bow 4-inch heels and a hat which looked like something the British ladies wear when they hail at an event with the queen of England. Though she desired to fit in, she did not. She made it through security and got into the courtroom after the hearing already started, but the judge, Jude Brady, had not yet, questioned Eddie. In walked Neecy.

Eddie turned his head to meet Neecy's eyes. He was so happy that she had made it to vouch for him. He did not have to stand when speaking to the judge as the judge allowed him to remain seated because of Eddie's bad leg and having to use a cane.

Judge Brady went through the formality of asking Eddie what year, date, day, and time it was. Eddie got stuck on if it was the 6th or 7th, but he knew it was Thursday in June of 1999. He knew the president at the time.

The judge asked Eddie if Neecy ever took money from him. Eddie hemmed and hawed. He would not answer the question directly.

During these hearings, there is a strict protocol to conduct and how to answer the judge, the court. The judge forewent the usual protocol to accommodate Eddie and give him the best chances to win the hearing in his favor.

That's when Neecy was called to the stand, but she sat as Judge Brady continued to question Eddie. Finally, Neecy blurted out: "Judge, may I please say something. I believe I can help answer some of your questions to Eddie?"

Judge Brady said in a matter-of-fact tone: "Okay, I'll allow it."

Judge Brady, "Ms. Neecy Baxter, had you ever taken any money from Eddie, or had he paid you at all during your interactions with Eddie?"

Neecy: "Judge, do you know of any woman who doesn't take any money from a man? I don't know of any women who haven't been taking money from men since time began. A roar of laughter burst out of everyone sitting in the court. The judge's demeanor changed from sanguine to frowning.

Judge Brady's voice rose and intensified; he was trying to contain his anger. He said: "Any children IN THIS COURTROOM UNDER THE AGE OF 18… OUT OF THIS COURTROOM NOW! I DEMAND THAT THE COURTROOM BE CLEARED, NOW!!!!

"Eddie, now you are under oath here, and we expect to hear the truth from you," Judge Brady reminded Eddie.

"Well, Judge, you know how it is…." Eddie said, motioning to the judge with one hand in the air as if to say, "Hey, give me a break."

A few more questions were asked of Eddie, but it was clear he could not give a straight answer.

Judge Brady said, "Yes, I see what's going on here. Let's wrap this up. Eddie, we're going to get you the help you need. It was your girlfriend who cut you up with a knife, and you ended up in the hospital almost dying from the wounds, was she not?" Eddie hemmed and hawed and would not answer the question.

Judge Brady quickly made a determination that Graverman, Graverman, and Wicks would be Eddie's court-appointed conservators and guardians. The judge made the decision to appoint a guardian for Eddie as his judgment or lack thereof proved to be an endangerment to himself.

Graverman and Graverman were brothers and were highly esteemed by the courts. They were considered to be the most honest of court-appointed conservators and guardians. They took no money from this case.

They worked swiftly on Eddie's behalf and secured a halfway house with four other men equal in age and economic status. The men quickly accepted Eddie at the home. All became great friends and loved the stories Eddie would tell about his boxing glory days. The men shared everything, and nothing was denied to them. They often enjoyed beers together and would even go to the World Series together.

I would visit Eddie, and he was as gracious as ever, but with a wary eye as it was I who stopped Neecy from stealing his social security checks, or so I thought. All the men were sitting on the concrete porch of the Brownstone. All were polite. I gave up my last write-up to Judge Brady.

As promised by their oath to their office, Graverman, Graverman, and Wicks kept tabs on Eddie, making sure he was safe, had all that he needed, and even a generous amount of spending money in his pocket to do normal things of everyday living.

Around six weeks later, I received a call from the law office. Ben Graverman informed me that Eddie was in trouble, and so were the other men at the halfway house. Apparently, Neecy found Eddie. Neecy found her way into the hearts and into the pants of all the men in the house. They were happy that they were getting their sexual needs met, and life was pretty sweet until the 4th day of the month when all their social security checks arrived. Neecy promised that she would only take a little bit of the money the men had set aside for their fun money. However, the person who did the wash bought the groceries and did some light housework went to get the checks to pay the bills and buy groceries; but, the checks were gone. (This was in the days before electronic banking wherein one could have their checks go straight into one's bank account.)

Neecy cashed all the checks and gave most of the money to Carl. They were living high on the hog, and Neecy was getting all the crack that she could smoke. So investigators hired by Judge Brady did a sting operation.

The next time Neecy showed up at the home to service all the men and steal the checks, she was stopped by the investigators. Stealing Federal checks is a Federal crime, and the penalties are much harsher than stealing someone's private check from a company. The police arrested Neecy, and a quick hearing was held. Neecy, caught "red-handed," was found guilty of stealing government checks, causing harm to vulnerable individuals that may have led to their death, and whatever the penalty is for selling her body to the men. She landed a nine-year sentence to a penitentiary.

As for Carl, no one knows for sure, but there were an increased number of drug busts in the area the year Neecy went to prison. The last known rumor of Carl was that he was shot dead by a foe drug gang.

Eddie no longer lives in the halfway house. He went back to his home after finding a nice church-going woman of 55 who was the cook for the men at the halfway home. She and Eddie are very happy and Eddie barely ever thinks about Neccy any longer.
