YOU’RE ALL MINE - ch 5

(the magic of Midnight)

^ ^

As Mia took off with her friend Adrian in her arms and Midnight, in fear of flying, wrapped tightly around Mia’s neck, Mickey shouted to the others, “Please, everyone pack up. I need to get home. I’ll call you as soon as I can.” With that, he sprouted his wings (something he rarely did) and took off for Mia’s house.

As Finola stood and walked to the door, she said, “There’s been a bit of trouble. Morena, get your medical bag. Mia’s fine but her friend isn’t.”

Brian jumped up and quickly volunteered to get the car. “Brian, honey, that’s fine. You can meet us at the clinic. Morena and I will jump a ley line. It’s faster.”

“Jump a what?” he said before he realized there were ley lines everywhere.

Mickey threw the door open as everyone scuttled around preparing to leave. “Hi Auntie Finola, guess you already know.”

“Yes, mo nia brea (my fine nephew). You’ll go with your parents and Uncle Brian and meet us at the clinic.”

Morena said to Finola, “Aunt Finola, I’ll admit that I worried about Mia being an elf. I was terrified her friends would tease her. Now, I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Finola smiled as she and Morena stepped on the ley line a vanished.

At the clinic, Mia gently touched down and asked as she hurried into the clinic, “Adrian, are you okay? You’re very pale? Has the pain gotten worse?”

Her friend gave her a weak smile and replied with a slurred speech, “Mia, I feel like I have no energy, not even enough to cry because of the pain in my foot, but even though I knew you were an elf and could fly, I never dreamed I’d be flying with you. Guess I was a bit scared at first.”

A nurse met Mia at the door. “Mia, your mum called. She’ll be here momentarily. Let’s get your friend into the examination room.”

Mia noticed that her friend was sweating profusely and asked the nurse for a cup of cool water. Although hesitant about leaving her patient, she heard Morena’s voice call out, “Helen? Have they arrived?” The nurse opened the curtain and left the room to greet Mia’s mother and aunt.

After giving Mia a quick hug, Morena walked to the bed where Adrian lay.

“Okay, honey, Mickey has notified your parents; they should be calling me,” she began as her cell phone rang, “ … never mind, I think that’s your mom.”

She quickly answered all the questions Adrian’s mother asked, then procured permission for the young girl to have a pain reliever.

Turning back to Mia’s friend, Morena said, “Adrian, your parents are on the way. They should be here in about fifteen minutes but in the meantime, your mom said it was okay for me to start an IV with anti-venom. I’m also going to give you an injection for pain relief. You’re, what? Fourteen? So, I want to make sure you know what I’m about to do. Is that okay?”

Adrian looked through hazy eyes at Morena and with what seemed to be a fading speech, said, “That’s fine with me, Mrs. Diehl. But right now, I’m in no pain. I don’t feel anything.

“I know, honey, but you’re still going to need the morphine. Bear with me while I find the nurse.”

She hardly finished the sentence when the nurse walked through the curtained partition. “Doctor, I’ve brought the cold-water Mia asked for and the set up for an IV. Am I understanding correctly that she stepped on a sea urchin?”

“Yes, Helen, but how it washed up on our riverbank is a mystery.”

“Doctor,” the nurse replied, “there’s been quite a number of storms at sea lately and it appears they water’s turbulence is sending all sorts of things about.”

Looking at Adrian, Helen said, “There, now, mo stor, your IV is in. The anti-venom should begin to work shortly.”

While Morena and the nurse tended to Adrian, Midnight sat quietly in the corner until Mia walked to her and all but slumped in the nearest chair. “Midnight, mo mhuirnin (my darling), I’m frazzled. What can I do?” She sounded as if she’d begin crying at any moment. While the others heard a soft, barely audible meowing, Mia heard, “mo chroi (my heart), don’t take this the wrong way but I’d rather see Adrian being tended to than you.”

Mia gave her feline friend an angry glare and whispered, “That’s a horrible thing to say, Midnight. You should be ashamed.”

“Mia, please don’t be angry. I only meant that I don’t want anything to happen to you and Andrian was lucky you were there for her. Who would have been able to take such quick action if it had been you who’d gotten hurt?”

She picked up the still-trembling feline and said, “I’m sorry, Midnight. You have a very good point. From now on, now walking on that beach without some sort of footwear. And, hey, what’s wrong with you? You’re trembling fiercely. Are you okay?”

Midnight rubbed her head on Mia’s chin and softly said, “Mo chroi, I’ve never flown before. I thought for sure I’d fall and break something. Can you imagine, me, who is sworn to protect you, walking around with broken bones? Not all cats land on their feet, you know!”

Mia, beginning to relax a bit, smiled and said, “In that case, I’ll have to ask Aintin to help me learn the ley lines.”

“The what lines? Please tell me they don’t include flying!”

“No; not really flying, as in off the ground. The ley lines are just a fast way to travel, but on the ground. We’ll have fun going from here to there.”

“Oh, Mia, as your mother said, ‘you’ll be the death of me, yet.”
