YOU’RE ALL MINE - ch 32

(the magic of Midnight)

^ ^

Midnight tiptoed around the house. She knew something was unsettling but couldn't put her, well, paw on it. She hissed quietly, “Something is amiss. It’s not big but it’s not good.” The feline wondered if she should wake Mia to investigate but then had another idea.

Mia turned over. “I can hear you, Midnight. You’re trying to be quiet but you’re restless. You have one of two choices. Either settle down or tell me what’s bothering you. I’d like to get back to sleep while I still have four hours before I need to get up for school.”

Midnight ignored her and instead leaped upon the table where Mia kept her scrying mirror. Slowly padding her way towards it, she leaned over to see her reflection, then without an audible sound, meowed.

Instantly, Finola’s face came into view. Seeing the cat’s face and not her niece’s, instinctively knew something wasn’t right. Using her thoughts, she said, “Midnight, you need to wake Mia and her parents. Do it now! I’m on my way!”

The feline leaped off the table and almost flying in the air, landed on Mia’s bed with a heavy thump! Trying not to screech and frighten the girl, Midnight meowed, “Mia, mo stor, you need to wake up. I’m sorry but this is important. Go get your parents. Finola is on her way.”

Mia suddenly sat up and whispered, “Midnight, what is it? Tell me.”

“Not too sure, mo chroi (my heart) but I feel trouble brewing. I can feel it but it’s too strong to allow me to know what it is. I already used your mirror to call Finola.”

“OMG! Midnight! You really are full of surprises. I didn’t know you knew how to do that. Let’s get my parents – but let’s not race in their bedroom and scare them too much.”

She gently knocked on the door to her parents’ bedroom as she twisted the handle and walked in. Once at her father’s side of the bed, she touched his shoulder. “Dad. Dad, wake up There’s trouble.”

Brian opened his eyes. “What’s wrong? What’s happening?”

“Dad, I don’t know. Midnight felt something and, used my mirror to call Aintin. She felt it, too, and she’s on her way. Please wake up mom. I’ll go downstairs and put on some coffee.”

Brian turned to where his wife was sleeping and as he shook her arm said, “Morena. Honey, get up. Mia said there’s trouble. We need to go downstairs and find out what’s happening. She’s also making coffee.”

He got out of bed and reached for his shirt and pants. “Oh, and Finola felt something too. Mia said she’s on her way. If Finola is coming, it can’t be anything trivial. I think we should leave the lights off until we know what’s happening.”

Morena pushed her body out of bed. “Oh, Brian, why do these things happen in the middle of the night? Especially when I’ve had a brutal day at work and another on the way! Okay, then, let’s go try and fix whatever’s going on.”

Quietly and hurriedly, they dressed and made their way down the stairs and into the kitchen where they found mugs of coffee waiting.

“Thanks, Mia. Have you …” Brian never finished his question as they heard a slight knock on the door. They opened it to find Finola standing there.

“Brian, Morena, bring your flashlights but don’t turn them on until I tell you. You’re not going to like what you’re going to see, but at least we’ll have the element of surprise.”

She led them around the back of the house to where Mia’s thriving garden was situated and heard what sounded like something scratching the ground. They approached slowly and quietly and then Fiola whispered, “Now! Turn your lights on now!”

Simultaneously, as they pressed the switches to their flashlights and pointed them in the direction to where Finola indicated, Mia created her ball of light and together, they illuminated the backyard.

What they saw had Brian furious. Morena and Finola were horrified and Mia? Well Mia’s emotions went well beyond what her parents felt as they watched Tim Dwyer and his friends completely destroy Mia’s garden and greenhouse.

Mia, whose eyes radiated fierce and “almost” uncontrollable anger, spread her arms up in a v-shape. The sky illuminated with flashes of lightning. She cried out as thunder roared: “What has been done to what belongs to me, what has been ruined here for all to see, shall bounce back to you, three times three! So I desire it! So mote it be!”

Thunder exploded as more lightning flashed; she wasn’t done.

Lowering her arms, with fingers outstretched and pointing to Allen and Marty, said, “Under evil’s spell, you are forever free. So I demand it. So mote it be!”

Everyone watched at the teens’ eyes opened in recognition. They turned and ran from Mia’s garden, screaming, “Oh my god! We’re sorry! So sorry!”

She then turned her attention to Tim and shouted amid the raging storm. Before she cast her spell, she looked directly in his eyes and said, “You will remember this night for as long as you live. Repeat after me: “I’ve done so much wrong and caused nothing but strife. Now, I’ll be miserable for the rest of my life.”

He found no self-will but only felt compelled to echo her words.

It was then she cast her spell.

“From this moment, from the moon to the sun, you’ll seek your powers but will always find none. As you search for control, you will always fail. Alone at night, you will do nothing but wail. By my command and the goddess’ grace, the evil you’ve done will be etched on your face. You’ll cry in the mirror. You’ll know and you’ll see - that this is what I desire. So mote it be!”

Mia turned, without a second look back, and as she walked to her house said, “Midnight, thank you for waking me. We’ll tend to my garden in the morning.”

Her parents and aunt, still in shock at the power they never anticipated in Mia, watched Tim’s handsome face turn ugly beyond words.

They entered the house and there, they found Mia on the sofa, sleeping peacefully with Midnight, wrapped in her arms.
