YOU’RE ALL MINE - ch 26
(the magic of Midnight)
^ ^
After that day, Brian watched his daughter carefully but saw nothing out of the ordinary. She seemed to go about her business as she always did. She’d wake early, tend her garden, and go to school. Upon returning home, Mia did her homework, tidied her room, and tackled a few household chores while her mother worked. After all that was finished, she’d go back outside to her garden and turn on the sprinkler system that her father had installed a few years before. She always said the plants grew better if they were watered after sunset. Satisfied, she’d quickly check on the seedlings in her greenhouse.
“Well, Midnight, mo stor, looks like everything is under control out here. Mom should be home any minute so how about we go in and I’ll give you a bowl of tuna?”
Midnight meowed loudly and replied, “As long as you can promise me that there won’t be any bugs in my bowl.”
Mia laughed. “Midnight, just between you, Aintin, and me, you know you’ll never see them again. And luckily, so far, things have been pleasantly quiet. Let’s go; I’m going to set the table for supper.”
Not long after Mia walked inside, her mother arrived home from the clinic. “Oh, my heavens! You’ll never guess what happened today!”
Brian looked up from his laptop and said, “Don’t tell me you had another crazy day with the big “D”! What happened now?”
“It all started after the lunch hour. Francis came in with a large cut on his arm. Seems he was riding his bike, making a delivery when a gust of wind came out of nowhere and blew him over, causing him to land on one of those barb-wire fences.” She looked at the concern on Mia’s face and continued, “Mia, he’s fine. He just needed a few sutures but he’s ok. Tim, on the other hand, had a more serious injury. He’s not critical but I advised his father to take him to Dunlavin to the hospital. He was washing his car when the wind blew hard, knocked down the car’s hood, which landed on his arm and snapped the bone. It’s a compound fracture, so he’ll need minor surgery to repair it. That’s something we can’t do in the clinic. Then Tim’s brother came in and he was, well, horsing around barefoot in their yard, and broke two of his toes. Although the protocol says not to tape broken toes, since they were next to each other, I taped them and the two next to them. He'll be fine. But holy cow! What a strange day.”
Brian again, gave his daughter a suspicious glance but said nothing. Mia was still sitting on the floor gently caressing Midnight’s back.
Mia finally looked up at her mother and asked, “Mom, should I ask Francis to cancel our date for the dance? I don’t want him in an awkward position to feel it necessary to take me if he’s in pain.”
Morena answered, “You can call and ask him but while he was in the clinic, he told me that in no way would he back out of taking you. This was something he was really looking forward to and promised he’d be more careful so his wound would heal.”
Mia picked up her phone and walked to the living room and Morena heard her say, “Francis? Mom just got home and told me about your accident. I won’t blame you if you want to cancel our date. You need to heal.”
A few minutes later, Mia came back into the kitchen. “Mom, I could tell he was still in a bit of pain but said he didn’t want to disappoint me since I already bought a new dress. He also said that if he’s still in pain, he’ll ask you for some kind of anti-pain ointment to apply to his wound. Mom, he’s in pain and he doesn’t want to disappoint me! Mom, that’s so sweet! Isn’t it?”
Morena smiled and Mia heard Midnight begin to sing the song by Dusty Springfield, “I don't know what it is that makes me love you so. I only know I never want to let you go, 'Cause you've started something Oh, can't you see? That ever since we met you've had a hold on me. It happens to be true, I only want to be with you.”
Mia laughed and mumbled, “Midnight, knock it off. It’s one little date. That’s all”
Midnight replied, “Mmm. If you say so.”
The phone rang and Mia’s sat up straight. “Mom, you’d better answer that. Dad, you should go with her. I’ll be fine. I’ll go to Aintin’s house.”
Brian’s heart skipped a beat, as he asked, “Mia, what is your intuition telling you? How bad is it?”
There’s been a fire. Actually, two fires. Mom, Dad, now I really do feel awful. I’m so sorry.” Mia almost began to cry when Brian asked, “Mia, what did you do to feel so bad?”
“Dad, I put a spell on Tim. I wanted him to leave us alone.”
“Mia, tell me the spell you used.” Brian’s voice was sharp but not angry,
“Dad, I was careful. Even Aintin said it was a good spell.”
“Mia, tell me! Now!”
“Dad, all I said was:
See the cruelty and see the pain
That you always cause time and again.
When you hurt or embarrass me and mine,
What you sow, you’ll reap, nine time nine.
Your darkest intentions will shine true
As every action comes back to you.
White always wins and now you’ll see.
So, I desire it; so, mote it be!”
Brian hugged his daughter and sighed. “Mia. What you did was fine. If he’d have left us alone, he’d be fine. You didn’t hurt him; his black heart did. Go be with Finola. We’ll go into town and see what we can do. I’m sure his father might need some help.”
