YOU’RE ALL MINE - ch 20
(the magic of Midnight)
^ ^
Mia spent the week after her party driving, yes, Midnight, I said driving her friends as far as she felt comfortable to go.
“Hey, Mia, where are we going next? Come on, girlfriend, you need to explore. Don’t you want to show Charlotte and Julie more of Ireland? Let’s go! What are you waiting for?”
Mia sighed an exasperating sigh and looked at her friends. “Char, Julie, you know my background. You were with me when Mo daes followed me home and well, she sort of adopted me, not the other way around.”
Charlotte nodded,”Mia, we know you’re part Elf and part Witch. So, whatever you want to say, you don’t have to worry what we might think.” Julie laughed and said, “Mia, honey, we all know you’re a bit odd, so spill it. What’s going on?”
Mia laughed along with her friends and replied, “Midnight can speak. Not many people can understand her meowing but, well, she’s my familiar and speaks to me almost constantly.”
Charlotte couldn’t resist teasing her friend and laughed when she asked, “Oh, you’re like Dr. Doolittle?”
Midnight meowed loudly, stuck a stiff tail in the air and Mia heard her say, “Hummph! Dr. Doolittle? Mia, watch this!”
She turned to Charlotte and meowed very clearly, “Charlotte, that was a movie and not really a very funny one. You should ask Mia about her first adventure on the ley lines. Now, THAT was funny.”
Charlotte stood still and quietly said, “Mia, was that your cat?”
Mia chuckled and said, “So you heard what she said, huh? Now you know what I go through every day!”
Julie admitted, “Mia, I heard it, also.”
Mia opened her arms and invited Midngiht to jump. Holding her familiar close, Mia said, “When she decides to allow others to hear and understand her, she verbalizes rather than just meowing. That’s the magic of Midnight.”
The cat nuzzeled her head under Mia’s chin and purred softely. Charlotte asked, a bit timidly, “Mia, do you think she’d allow me to pet her?”
Mia, moved her head away from Midnight’s and looked into the golden eyes of the black ball of fur. “Well, Midnight, what do you think? Can my friends pet you?”
Midnight reached her paw out and gently stroked Charlotte’s cheek. Then did the same to Julie.
Mia smiled as she said, “Well, you’ve just gotten the Midnight Seal of Approval!”
That’s when Midnight jumped out of Mia’s arms, began to dance around, and screeched, “Okay then! We’re all good! Let’s go for a ride! Mia, let’s go to Dublin. I want to see Dublin! I hear thay have some great fish markets there.”
Charlotte and Julie looked at Midnight but at that point, didn’t understand what she said. However, there was no mistake that Mia did when she said, “No, Midnight. We are NOT going into to Dublin. It’s an hour away and I promised my dad that he should come with me on my first few long trips. The farthest we’ll go today is Rosslea. I want to see the Clones wee Abbey. The monestary that is now ruined with age, was built sometime in the twelfth century. Then, there is the Clones Round Tower that dates back to the tenth century. Yes, there are more sites, but we’re not going hiking today. So, these two sights will make do. Ladies, Bring your cameras.”
“Mia, you’re a party pooper!” said Midnight to which she laughed and replied, “Midnight, one more bit of sarcasm from you and I doubt Aintin would mind keeping an eye on you while I go to Rosslea. Behave or stay! Your choice.”
Midnight grumbled and blocked even Mia from hearing what she said. It only made Mia laugh and say, “I’ll go tell my dad where we’re going so he can activate the tracker we had installed on the car.”
Midnight screeched at that. “Tracker? Tracker? Mia, doesn’t he trust you? Tracker? What are you? A foreign spy?”
The girl shook her head and replied, “Midnight, it was my idea. When we decided on the car I wanted, I asked if there was a tracker so dad could come get me if I had car trouble. I know Aintin could find me but she can’t fix cars. This way, dad can know exactly where I am if I need him.”
Midnight hung her head and admitted, “Yeah, I guess it makes sense. Sorry. I should have known you’d think of something like that.”
Mia rubbed the cat’s head and replied, “You were still mesmerized by the red convertible. So, you’re forgiven.”
Julie asked, “You passed up a red convertible for a blue SUV? I’d kill for a red convertible.”
Midnight was the one who replied, “Yeah, Julie, that’s what I said but Mia reminded me that her car isn’t for joy riding. It’s more for work. Guess her Escape makes more sense.”
She grabbed her purse, Charlotte and Julie grabbed theirs along with their cameras and off they drove, with Mia gently fingering the talisman Finola had given her years earlier.
As she drove down the road from her house, she spotted Francis, as usual, speeding on his bicycle. She slowed and lowered her window to wave, “Francis,” she called out. He slowed his bike and waved back. “Nice car, Mia!”
She smiled and said, “I know you’re busy so if you’re free Sunday, maybe we can go for a ride?”
His grin grew and replied, “Absolutely!”
After she drove away, Charlotte asked, “Omg! Mia! Is that the cute boy we met at your party? He’s gorgeous! How come I didn’t pay any attention to him last week?”
Mia laughed and answered, “Maybe because I was hogging his attention.”
They all heard Midngiht meow, “Mia and Francis, sitting in a tree!”
Mia blushed and yelled, “Midnight, that’s enough!”

Another great Midnight chapter. I hope you let them go into Dublin before her friends have to leave and are you going to let them meet 'him' and start a triangle of sorts.
