She picks up her new phone, opening a text message dated ten years ago.

Her smile widens as she reads the words. She doesn’t need to open the message as the words are engraved upon her heart.

Whenever she purchases a new phone, she downloads that old message and she knows she’ll die if she ever lost those precious words. They give her hope on her darkest days and love when she doubts, as they are words written from the grave.

Words sent seconds before he passed from this world. His last words to her, his last declaration of love.

I was challenged to write a drabble on the theme ‘one thing you couldn’t live without'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
