Where The Night Sky Ends
By Jacqueline Villa

“On today’s show we will be talking to a woman who claims she saw a green light right before she was kidnapped by aliens. Stay tuned,” the talk show host said as a producer behind a camera yelled cut. Chaos arose on set when the assistant couldn’t find Mary who was the guest attendee for the Roy Johnson Midnight Madness Show. Roy couldn’t be bothered since he was so full of himself to be distracted by such nonsense. Poor Mary was hiding in the stall in the women’s bathroom shaking from anxiety.
The assistant producer found her crunched down by the toilet. “Mary, are you okay to go on,” asked the gentlemen with the clipboard. She nodded yes and he helped her back to the stage. The bathroom stall that Mary was hiding in had funny symbols drawn on the back of the door. Mary looked worried as the assistant producer took her back to her seat on stage.
A crew member helped fix Mary’s mic while she got touched up with makeup. Roy sat at his desk awaiting to start his interview. He had five people trying to please him with a massage, beverages, snacks, a real Hollywood show boater. The off-stage manager put up a hand signal that they are coming back from commercial. The lights came on and Roy put on his tv show charm.
“Welcome back, my guest tonight is a young woman named Mary who claims she was abducted by aliens on Halloween night. Mary, please tell us your story.” Roy awaited Mary to speak but she just stared at the crew and audience. “So, Mary, what were you doing that night when you were being abducted?” Again nothing, Mary had gotten stage fright. “Maybe we should cut to a quick commercial to allow Mary to collect her thoughts.”
“That will be unnecessary Roy, I’m just nervous telling you what I saw because I’m worried they will get mad at me,” said Mary as she started to come to. “Then why did you decide to come on my talk show,” said Roy as he and the audience began to laugh. Mary wasn’t laughing or smiling when Roy made a joke at her expense.
“I wouldn’t do that Roy.”
“Do what Mary?”
“I was let go for a reason Roy, and after I tell my story I think you won’t be making anymore jokes,” said Mary as the audience and Roy became quiet with anticipation.“Well tell us your story while we are still on air,” said Roy as the audience laughed again at this awkward situation.
Mary began telling her story. The Halloween night was quiet with no trick or treaters. Mary Lived alone with her Basset Hound Rupert. She was making decaf coffee while awaiting her late-night horror marathon. Suddenly, a knock at the door. But this was no normal knocking. It sounded as if someone slammed a battering ram into her house. It startled Mary so much that she dropped her mug as coffee went all over her kitchen floor. Rupert began barking like crazy at the startling sound. Mary ran to the front and before she could open the door, the same slam began at the back door. Rupert at this point didn’t know which way to bark. Mary went into her coat closet and grabbed her small pistol. Nervously pointing it at the kitchen back door the power goes out.
“Quiet boy,” Mary said as she searched for a flashlight. The only flashlight she had was a witch lantern Halloween decoration that glowed green. It was a dim green glow but enough to see in front of her. Rupert hid in his bed as Mary walked over to the back door. As she got closer the sound of the slamming grew more constant. As if someone was trying to break in. When Mary approached the middle of the kitchen she slipped on the coffee and accidently shot the gun off at the door. Her legs flew into the air and she slammed her head into the ground. The last thing she saw was the green glowing light.
“So that’s how you were abducted by aliens, '' asked Roy as he thinks this is all a concussion story. “I’m only half way through Roy, it gets worse.”
Mary continued her story with everyone anticipating this is all just a bad dream. When she came to on her kitchen floor, the power had come back on. The TV was blaring in the other room. The young woman lifted herself up and cleaned the kitchen floor, grabbed a bag of ice, and nursed her head while on the sofa. Rupert jumped up on her lap. The movie that was broadcasting at this point in the night was Cloverfield. Mary got up to get a glass of water to help her dizziness but became frozen when staring into her kitchen.
Standing in the middle of the room was a lengthy green alien creature with no human-like qualities. Its skin glowed with purple vein-like textures. It breathed in deeply as it was harvesting a gunshot wound. Its arms reached all the way to the ground. Its hands were metal like which explained the banging from earlier. The face was the most terrifying part. It was the shape of a human head but just two small slits for eyes. The eyes glowed yellow.
“I…I…I didn’t mean to shoot you. I fell and my gun went off.” The creature said nothing but breathed heavily. It only made Mary more scared. Rupert slowly walked behind Mary frightened. The creature noticed Rupert and began to scream. It raised its hands and a glow shined on the dog making Rupert disappear. When it screamed his little yellow eye slits grew bigger, almost fly like eyes taking up the majority of its face. Its mouth was a dark hollow hole under his eyes. Mary screamed in terror as her dog evaporated.
She ran upstairs to her bedroom. When she looked at the end of the stairs the creature just slowly walked behind her as its hands dragged on the ground. When Mary Reached her bedroom, another creature was climbing in through the window. Screaming, she slammed the door and ran across the hall to the bathroom. Locking the door behind her she slumped into the tub, closed the curtains and began to sob to herself. The rush made Mary dizzy to the point where she passed out. The only sound heard before passing out was the slamming on the bathroom door.
A growing sound of barking came from down stairs. Mary woke up excited thinking everything was over. “Rupert! Rupert, where are you my boy? ” Mary reached the bottom of the stairs but Rupert wasn’t waiting for her. Instead, it was those creatures--five of them-- in her living room replaying the sounds of Rupert’s barking with their own mouths. When she realized things weren’t over Mary began screaming. Soon, the aliens began screaming and raised their arms out to evaporate Mary.
“My God, how did you escape,” asked Roy as he leaned in so close to hear this amazing story. “Well Roy, I was then taken to the ship where I was reunited with my dog.” The audience applauded thinking this was going to be a happy ending. “I don’t know why everyone is happy, I was reunited with my dog but they then started to study me and Rupert.”
“Then how did you escape?”
“They let me go silly,” said Mary as her tone became very uncomfortable.
“Tell us why!”
“I’m here as a warning. My purpose is to find a way to broadcast my story to warn viewers that the day has come. Today is the last day of human civilization as we know it.”
Roy laughed nervously. “You don’t mean that Mary. You’re just pulling our legs.”
“Why would I waste my time,” said Mary as she became serious. “As a hoax, 15 minutes of fame, who knows why,” said Roy as he began to grow tired of Mary.
“Believe what you want but I am only spared because I provided information, was cooperative, and used as a warning. Don’t shoot the messenger,” said Mary as she sipped her water.
“I’ve had enough of this, let’s cut to a quick commercial,” but before Roy could finish his request the studio power went out. Mary just sat comfortably sipping her water as Roy threw a fit at the power outage. Before anyone could find out what was going on, the room filled with a green glowing light. In the distance screaming arose from the studio audience. The ramming sound from Mary’s story began happening at every exit in the building.
“Mary, what’s going on,” screamed Roy as he began to panic. Out of nowhere Rupert ran onto Mary’s lap. “You see Roy the aliens used me as a warning. But most importantly they used my body to tell you that it’s over.”
“What in the world are you talking about Mary?” Before Roy could get an answer, Mary and her little dog Rupert began to change into the green tall alien creatures. Roy stared in disbelief and began to scream while the aliens lifted their arms up as a green light started to emerge.
The End.
