When an owl flies through

An owl from a far off place visits

By Monique M RoundtreePublished 4 years ago 4 min read

She had been sewing the finishing threads on a garment for a customer. She had a side job creating custom costumes for people who also loved getting into character and dressing up as much as she did. She would knit and crochet and wear her created prop armor and gear made with fabric and cardboard getting together with her friends and anyone else wanting to join on campus. Once she started being asked if she could make these cool creations by others who were interested, she started to gain a small valued gig. This particular customer was set to appear in a play and approached her on campus and asked her to create a nice flowing garb she thought came out pretty nice. It appeared as if she had spent all night working on this garment. New ideas kept her up and a bit of coffee. She decided to check her phone clock next to her sewing machine. Turning on the screen button she saw that it was 1:30 in the morning. She needed to get sleep as great as the thrill of creating something she was aware sleep was important to rest the mind for clarity on other projects. As she completed the garment she sat back in her chair.

Glancing out her window she saw an owl up in the tree. Brown and its face beige and white feathers seemed to have another color, a green blue hue that shined underneath the streetlight. This owl peered at her. Like it was looking right into her eyes. She rarely saw owls this close only when she visited an owl sanctuary one time. With her living in the city this felt like the first time in its natural environment she experienced what appeared to be a barn owl. She wondered why this moment in time it was appearing to her now. Either way she found it cool to see. The owl moved its head around looking away for a moment. Despite knowing the weather was chilled outside she decided to pull on her jacket and open the window. To her surprise the owl didn’t move away at the sound of her window opening. “Hi” she said, smiling at the owl. “My name is Mia”. The owl moved its head towards her again. Then out of nowhere the owl flew right passed her into her room. Startled, she jumped, and her heart raced for a moment. It perched itself right on top of her shelf. Now she was at a loss for what to do. An owl was in her room. She didn’t know how long it would take to fly back out on its own if it even wanted to and she didn’t know how she was going to get it back outside. With her window still open she wanted to hurry and get it out as it was getting increasingly colder. Okay she said "Please don’t make a mess here". The owl just stared at her. "Your home is out there," she continued. "I don't know if you flew in to get warm. I'm not really sure about owls and how their temperatures are- -" She stopped short in her sentence as the owl flapped its wings then ceased. Feathers flew to the side. “Okay” she said, I’m going to go to sleep now and it's better that you just fly right on out to your nest”. She tried coaxing the owl back outside. "Hey maybe I can knit you an owl sweater…” She thought to herself, ‘what are you saying this owl doesn’t need a sweater, maybe it's looking for food’ Her thoughts interrupted when the owl reached down, picking up one of the feathers with its beak. It landed on the floor with the feather still in its small beak and hopped tentatively towards her stopping at her feet as if attempting to give her the feather.

She tentatively reached for it then stopped deciding to grab a tissue off her desk first and then grabbing the feather. She wanted to be as cautious as possible. She stood up looking at the feather turning it in her hand. Within the feather it had a gold bronze looking shaft. She wondered how an owl could have such a shaft this gold in color. Was this natural? As she examined it more feathers appeared all around her to where all she saw was feathers. She shielded herself. She began to feel she wasn’t in her room anymore. What was happening? As the feathers fell away and she put down her arms she looked around. She wasn’t in her room anymore; she was in a very unfamiliar place. It appeared to be a very dimly lit forest; the only light shining through was forward through the mass of trees. She began to make her way quickly towards the light as she didn’t know what was around with her vision being obscured. Once she made it through following the light that appeared to be of an orb like shape of a possible moon in the distance, she made it to a little sanctuary it appeared or nook with feathers surrounding it and an odd chair. From the side appeared a woman with a beautiful mass of hair and what appeared to be a silver and gold crown adorning her locks. She had shining markings on her face and arms. Next flew in the same owl she thought had appeared to her in her room and seemed to have brought her here. The owl sat perched on the woman’s wrist. “Castor..” the woman said to the owl. I see you have brought a friend.”

Mia asked um I believe that I must be dreaming or something. "Since I will wake up soon, I might as well ask what is this place?

"I am channeling your language right now from Castor", The woman said. "Apologies to you I’m sure this is all very confusing. Its formal to go by names. My name is Emerutii. Castor for some odd reason has brought you here, I am not sure just yet. The answer will be presented to me in time".
