Hiding is pretty much all anyone can do anymore, well any human anyways. You can either go and hide, or you could get killed by the very things that were supposed to protect us.
These things follow a set of rules.
They go out on to the street, preach about how wonderful their code has made the world a better place, but if you are anything with a human heart beat you are killed on sight. Only myself and three other people that I know about are the only ones that we’re not killed or taken over by these things. Everyone else.
Gone.
As I started to look over our plan to escape this pit of despair, I look over to the only thing that has kept me through this, and the last of my hope. The golden locket that my fiancé gave to me before we got separated. It wasn’t real gold or anything fancy like that just gold paint, and, it was starting to chip away a little. I still remember his little smile when he said “Don’t worry love, once I get my pay and we get the house of our dreams. I will get you a proper locket and everything else will just fall into place so, don’t worry about the little details alright?” He always would say little details when he had a plan he knew I wouldn’t approve of, but even with his faults I still love him. I would always tell him that I didn’t need a fancy house or a solid gold locket to be happy, and he would just smile and say,
“No, you deserve better!” so happy with himself.
The day we got separated was still clear in my head. I was walking to his office when one of our friends came running over to me. Grabbing me by my shoulders, and pulling me into a café that was down and across the street. I turned to him asking him why he pulled me away from Alex’s office, when those things came and broke the doors at the main office where Alex was. The last thing that I saw clearly was two maybe three men being pulled away when Felix, our friend, pulled me away covering both of our faces with some type of cloth. When Felix finally removed the cloth from my eyes we were in an underground bunker that he, Alex, and a couple of other guys that I don’t remember quite well had built in case of an emergency happening. He then told me that the Protection Of The People had lost all traces of humanity and had started killing people in big or even just small things involving anything to do with them. I asked him if Alex was able to get out before those things attacked, but all he said was that he called Alex once he found out what was happening, and he drove over to Alex’s office and that was when he saw me. And his body just reacted before the rest of him did. He said that he would find him no matter what.
It has already been nine months since that happened, and it has just gotten worse. The only thing that keeps me going in this world, is my little heart shaped locket.
Felix ran in just than panting and smiling a what I hoped was a happy face but it was hard to tell. He came over to the desk that I was at and put down all sorts of snacks and drinks for all of us to share and split together. Rosy and James who were the other two people that Felix had saved came over and picked the stuff that they wanted to have, and I chose last.
As Rosy and James went back to what they were doing, Felix came and pulled up a chair next to me.
I waited to see if he was going to say anything, and instead he just waited till I was ready to talk. So, I put down my choice of snack which was potato chips and turned my chair to look at him. He still looked as if he didn’t want to talk so I started. “What’s up?” starting off simple. He than looked at me crossing his arms and making a pout. “You aren’t still trying to find Alex are ya?” ah there it is. I couldn’t lie to him. “Yes” Felix put his head into his hands and took a deep breath before saying. “Lu, Alex is gone, you saw for ya self what happened to him when those machines lost control, one of the first places that they attacked was Alex’s place of work” Felix spoke as if he was talking to a six year old child, not a twenty six year old woman. He than placed his hand on my shoulder. “He’s gone Lu, I’m sorry.” Felix said those words in a tone that said there was nothing more to say, but how could I give up?
On him, on our future together...
“But, he has to be out there I mean. Their still human.” Felix looked angry at those last words that came out of my mouth. He than stood up, taking another deep breath, and with what appeared to be the last of his self control he said. “Lucy, Once a human is captured and they don’t kill him or her,” he pause for a second to collect his thoughts, and contain himself. “They might as well be dead. Once, the code is put in them. They have lost there humanity, and, there souls.”
The End.
