New Beginnings – Mia and Midnight

(*)(*)(*)

Evangeline gently placed her hand on Alistar’s arm not just to calm him but also offer comfort. Looking at his wife, she saw his emotions of rage and sadness battle each other. He sat and grasped her hand.

Mia spoke, “I realize what I’m telling you will seem like a jumbled mess of thoughts but I’m trying to put things together as they happen. While Alistar could have, through thoughts and scrying spied on Ivy, he promised that he’d allow her to realize a week of independence.”

She heard him mumble, “Never again! I can promised this.” To which Evangelia replied, “Oh, Alistar, she’s fine and will stay that way. Now, you need to stay calm.”

Mia heard him sigh deeply.

“While you’re wondering what happened a few minutes ago when Alistar and his family sort of dropped out of the sky, he used a portal. A portal is a method of transportation many witches use as a way of getting from one place to another in a matter of minutes, sometimes seconds, depending on how far we plan to go. When Tony Morreti brought you here from New York, Aintin and I met his plane at the Dublin Airport and used a portal to get you here – to this house.”

She noitced a petite blonde shyly raise her hand to ask a question. “Liz, is it?” The young women nodded her head. “What is it you’d like to know?”

“Is the portal your only means of transportation? Does anyone drive cars? Take buses?”

Mia smiled. “There are no buses in this part of Greenan. It’s way too rural. There might be a few seen here and there in town but they’re rare. Most of us drive cars and portals are only used when we need to travel a good distance. I think I can safely say that most of you haven’t heard of Ley Lines. If you have, you might only be familiar with the longitute and laditude aspects of them. We used them for shorter distances. We can, hmm, I’ll make it simple, jump on a line and within seconds be where we need to be.”

She notice one of the young women lower and shake her head as she mumbled almost incoherently, “wow, ley lines, portals, witches. What’s next?”

Mia tried not to laugh. She moved her left hand in a swooping motion at the women, and said, “Before I continue, while each of you were stroking the kitten that is resting in your laps, please look in the eyes of your feline. Yes, I said ‘your’. These cats now belong to you, or maybe it’s the other way around. If you can think of a name, look at your cat and say hello.”

One looked at her cat and said, “Hello, Boots. Can I call you Boots? You’re almost all white but your paws are all black. I think Boots fits, don’t you, my little one?” She almost jumped out of her chair when her cat looked up at her and said, “Oh, Annora, I love my new name. Thank you.”

“She, she,” she stuttered then almost screamed, “OH MY GOD! SHE SPOKE TO ME! DID YOU HEAR HER? SHE SPOKE TO ME!:”

Another young women tried. She looked into the eyes of her cat and gently said, “My first thought was to call you Spotty because of the way your black and white spots are all jumbled but Spotty is too, well, too stupid. Can I call you Dotti? Rather than Spots, I think you have Dots. What you think, sweetie?” Her cat stood on her hind legs and said, “Ana, I like that. Dotti it is!”

Analiese (Ana) smiled and nuzzled her new feline friend. They all took turns naming and in total amazement, speaking with their kittens and then, Laura, one of the twins asked, “Mia, how on earth did you do that? I’ve never heard of a talking cat before.”

Midnight strutted to where Mia stood and said, “Can I, mo stor?”

She picked up her familiar and said, “Keep in mind, Midnight, that this will be the one and only time you’ll be allowed on the table.”

The cat replied, “Understood, mo chroi, and thank you.”

Midnight slowly paced the length of the table, being sure to make eye contact with each youyng woman. “It’s not so much that your kitten can speak; it’s mostly that you can understand her. As Mia mentioned, you are among a part of the community of White Witches. I am Mia’s familiar which is to say that she belongs to me. I use that phrase because cats are known to be independent and I can and will help anyone in need. However, if Mia needs me, she comes first. All she has to do is relay her thoughts to me and I will hear. Each of you, please close your eyes and think of the name you’ve given your kitten. Then ask your kitten to nuzzle your neck.”

The surprise and amazement was all over their faces as their kittens did exactly what they were thinking.

Midnight continued to pace, “Keep in mind, please, you are not witches. You don’t just become witches; it’s in the blood, in the family. Your kittens have been placed under a spell so you can communicate with them. Also, no one else will understand what your kitten says to you. All they’ll hear is a “meow”. While your kittens will protect you, they will never instigate an altercation. They will be your companions, your friends, your means of comfort. Now, ladies, if you have any questions, please ask Mia or Aintin. I’m sure they’ll be able to answer anything and everything.”

With that all said, Midnight jumped off the table and heard Mia laugh. “Damn, girl! For a cat who’s usually full of wit and sarcasm, you surely did have a lot of great things to say!”

She alone heard Midnight laugh and say, “Oh, mo chroi, you still have no idea of my capabilities. Now, can I please have a bowl of milk? All that talking made me thirsty.”
