Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season
a microfiction

He came to Carlos’s shop every day. Same chair, same striped shirt, same white brimmed hat, same order–Espresso, one sugar (meaning two, with a wink. A secret between friends).
Otherwise, Carlos knew little besides he was an author, always jotting in his leather notebook while sipping espresso.
He must have had some renown, Carlos assumed, because occasionally, people would stop, shake his hand, ask for an autograph or a picture.
The hurricanes came and went, and with them regimes rose and fell–what were such matters to a simple store owner like Carlos.
Except now, each day, that chair remained empty.

I don't know what the prompt was but it is sad when people, who have been a constant before, leave your life. Good story!
A poignant ending to an excellent descriptive piece - nicely done Matthew
I can't help but feel sad for what was potentially lost, like the changing of the seasons... some things will never be the same! Nice work, Matthew!!
Wow you made so much emotion flow from such a small prompt! Amazing! ✨️✨️
What a shame. I'm sure he misses his friend
Another absolute schooling in the way of the micro! This is fantastic! I adored the parenthetical lines so much. Definitely piqued my curiosity too. I sense this is a historical figure I'm not familiar with. Hurricanes and regimes make me think Cuba though
