Toromiro

The Tree of Life

By Elisa GreenPublished 2 years ago 7 min read

The term Toromiro holds great importance in the realm of linguistic diversity, especially when it refers to the various species of trees. Although these trees have different origins, they all share a common thread of interdependence. Despite their diverse backgrounds, these trees play a crucial role in cultivating a strong sense of unity due to their significant cultural importance.

Nestled in the depths of the South Pacific Ocean, Toromiro Island emits a mysterious and captivating aura that enthralls inquisitive travelers. With its majestic Moai statues, the island offers a captivating enigma surrounding its ancient past. Nevertheless, the enigmatic charm of the impressive stone Moai and scattered remnants of ancient artifacts continue to baffle historians and archaeologists.

How did the pioneering inhabitants undertake their voyage to reach this sacred land? It cannot be overlooked that the first pioneers crossed a treacherous expanse of at least 3,600 kilometers, with the closest mainland being South America. Furthermore, the mystery surrounding the deforestation of this once-lush terrain and the careful construction of these gigantic statues continue to persist.

Respected scholars have recently come into possession of evidence indicating the existence of a thriving civilization. Within a verdant expanse surrounded by dense forests, the Asrai coexist peacefully with flourishing vegetation and captivating creatures. A young boy named Matteo, who was driven by a strong desire for more, set out on a journey to correct the errors made by his ancestors. With remorse and a longing to protect, Matteo leads us through the Makatea Forrest.

The Asrai, through the elegance and magnificence of these sculptures, aims to communicate the significance of safeguarding the wonders of nature. This magical location provided a safe refuge for numerous creatures searching for comfort in its grand branches. When bathed in the ethereal radiance of the full moon, the scenery, embellished with raised coral reefs, assumes a mesmerizing and enchanting charm. It is also the place where the last Toromiro Tree stands firm and majestic.

As the other trees made their way gracefully, they revealed more treasures that had been eagerly anticipated beneath the lush sanctuary of the woods. Time-honored Statues, carefully crafted with the utmost precision, emerged from their dormant state, captivating anyone who witnessed their presence. These incredible works of art exceeded our expectations, evoking deep admiration and fascination.

These remarkable sculptures, which were towering in stature and adorned with intricately carved details, depicted a world filled with mythical creatures, revered hunters, and ethereal beings.

These beings appeared to have a distinct and elegant presence, with some having fins and others having traditional legs. Their upper bodies and faces possessed a captivating charm that resembled each other. Interestingly, the ones with fins had one pair of upper limbs, which consisted of humorous, radius, ulna, carpal, and metacarpal bones, unlike the ones adorned with feathers possessed by the ones with legs.

The statues told a story about two species: one that lived in both the air and on land, and another that lived in the sea. As the sun of gold sets on Toromiro Island, the ethereal glow it emits reveals the intricate patterns formed by the branches of the revered Toromiro Tree, filling the air with a timeless and romantic ambiance. A captivating love story, engraved in the annals of history, unfolds as though whispered by the wind.

The story of Sirena and Stamen, two souls destined to be together, has been passed down through generations. It was beneath the protective branches of the sacred Toromiro Tree, the only one left of its species, where their deep love flourished, enhanced by the tree's magical qualities. Their marriage resulted in the birth of their cherished child, Tormira.

The Asrai tribe, esteemed and respected, considers this majestic tree to be the embodiment of human life. Its enchanting essence acted as the catalyst that brought together these soulmates, forever intertwining their destinies.

Despite their different habitats, it was astonishing how similar their governing principles were. It was said that if a mermaid managed to capture a fairy, they would gain control over the vast sea. Conversely, if a fairy skillfully caught sight of a mermaid and captured her, she would become the ruler of the majestic sky and earth.

Therefore, two different species from opposite realms had a shared desire: Stamen, a fairy, wanted to rule over the earth and air realm, whereas Sirena, a mermaid, wished to reign over the marine domain.

According to the story, Sirena, the mermaid, was regarded as the most beautiful creature in the ocean. Many creatures were captivated by her voice and alluring appearance, but it was Stamen who captured Sirena's attention.

As Sirena approached the cove, she spotted a faint flicker of light dancing gracefully among the vibrant waves. Her heart pounded with anticipation. ``Maybe it's a fairy?'' she thought.

As she fully embraced the path assigned to her, a powerful mixture of fear and excitement coursed through her veins. Sirena's heart raced with anticipation upon seeing the fairy, who instantaneously morphed from a small, flickering light into an awe-inspiring being, standing tall on two legs.

Stamen did not notice, but Sirena took advantage of the opportunity to fulfill her destiny. She swiftly swam closer, gracefully maneuvering through the underwater plants, never taking her eyes off Stamen. His wings, vibrant and resembling delicate flower petals, fluttered rapidly as he effortlessly followed the wind.

Although they came from different backgrounds, the two individuals fell in love and would often meet covertly beneath the Toromiro Tree. Their love was considered forbidden, as it was understood that their union had the potential to alter the course of history. However, they could not resist the allure of being in each other's presence.

They would spend countless hours discussing their hopes and ambitions, longing for a life beyond what had been bestowed upon them. In the end, the tree granted their wish to consummate their love, which resulted in Sirena's tail transforming into legs and Stamen's wings becoming arms, thus creating the first humans. As a result of Sirena's pregnancy, they welcomed their daughter, Torima.

The fairies and mermaids of Toromiro observed these changes and began worshiping the tree, viewing it as a sacred location. In the traditional Asrai religion, the tree's branches were utilized in religious ceremonies. The revered branch enabled the priest to establish communication with the deities.

Over time, additional fairies and mermaids fell in love, resulting in the emergence of the Asrai population. Their love was incredibly strong, causing the Toromiro Tree to bloom and prosper, becoming the central focal point of the island.

By capturing each other's affections, Stamen and Sirena jointly assumed the roles of rulers over the land, sea, and air. The large Stone statues were easily built by harnessing the powers of water, earth, air, and fire from the volcanoes.

As Torima aged, she transformed into a wise leader, hailed as the greatest ruler by the Asrai people. She skillfully steered the island's dwellers towards prosperity, while also ensuring they did not overlook the enigmatic aspects of the island.

After Torimas had ruled for a long time, chaos ensued during the reign of her great-grandson as the ruler. Certain mermaids and fairies had been expelled due to their attempts at disrupting the love between Stamen and Sirena. The fairies and mermaids, who were forced to leave the island, pursued their own paths to prosper.

Many years later, when they transformed into humans, their desire to explore brought them back to the island. Unfortunately, they carried with them diseases and greed, which nearly resulted in the extinction of the Asrai people.

With the passing of time and the changing of seasons, the island saw an influx of newcomers, leading to a significant increase in its population and subsequently creating more needs. Unfortunately, the demand for timber exceeded the available resources, and a combination of greed and lack of foresight started to harm the island's beauty.

It was during this crucial moment that the outcasts, motivated by their personal ambitions, foolishly decided to explore deeper into the heart of the Makatea forest. Their actions nearly destroyed the statues and traditions, posing a threat to the survival of the island's inhabitants. Motivated by a desire for progress and wealth, the outsiders embarked on a path of deforestation, relentlessly swinging their axes and disrupting the once-peaceful forest.

Despite years of civil war and disease, the Asrai's determination to preserve their lineage enabled them to overcome the brink of extinction. The Asrai promise to safeguard and nurture the remaining forest, with the statues now serving as guardians of their history.

Continuing to adhere to sustainable practices, they embraced the opportunity for the forest to regenerate and flourish. The statues serve as symbols of grace and humility, perpetually reminding them of the valuable lessons acquired from the destructive acts of deforestation and greed.

The Asrai lineage, who were the first settlers on Toromiro Island, were not unfamiliar to the island's inhabitants. Although there is no solid proof to back this theory, the island's people still hold onto this belief and pass down the story of their forefathers.
