The Worst Flight

A short story.

By Tamseela AroojPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

As soon as the plane took off, Amanda closed her eyes and leaned her head back on the seat. She was exhausted, having spent the past few days attending a conference in another city. She was looking forward to finally getting some rest on the long flight back home.

However, her plans for a peaceful flight were quickly dashed when she heard a loud commotion coming from a few rows ahead of her. She opened her eyes and saw a man standing in the aisle, arguing with a flight attendant.

"I demand to be served alcohol!" the man shouted. "I'm sorry, sir, but we cannot serve alcohol at this time," the flight attendant responded calmly. The man continued to argue, getting increasingly agitated. Amanda sighed and tried to block out the noise, but it was impossible. She put on her noise-cancelling headphones, but even that wasn't enough to drown out the man's loud voice. After what felt like an eternity, the man finally calmed down and returned to his seat. Amanda was relieved, but still couldn't relax. She was too keyed up from the incident.

As the flight continued, Amanda tried to distract herself by reading a book. She was in the middle of a chapter when she suddenly felt the plane shake. It wasn't a small bump, but a violent jolt that sent her book flying out of her hands.

She looked around, trying to gauge the other passengers' reactions. Some were sleeping, oblivious to the turbulence, while others looked concerned. The pilot's voice crackled over the intercom, informing them that they were experiencing unexpected turbulence and to fasten their seatbelts.

Amanda's heart raced as the plane continued to shake. She gripped the armrests tightly, trying to steady herself. It felt like the turbulence would never end, but finally, the shaking subsided.

Amanda let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding and looked around. The other passengers seemed to be okay, and the flight attendants had resumed their duties. Amanda closed her eyes and took a deep breath, relieved that the worst was over.

As the flight continued, Amanda finally managed to get some rest. She slept for a few hours, waking up as the plane began its descent. She looked out the window and saw the lights of the city below. It was good to be back home.

As the plane landed and taxied to the gate, Amanda gathered her belongings and made her way off the plane. She was relieved that the flight was over and grateful that they had made it safely back to the ground. She made a mental note to avoid sitting near the front of the plane on her next flight.

As Amanda walked through the airport terminal, she felt a sense of unease. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. She checked her phone and saw that she had missed several calls and messages from her family. Panic set in as she quickly dialed her mother's number. When her mother answered, Amanda could hear the tears in her voice. "Sweetheart, I have some terrible news," her mother said. "Your brother was in a car accident. He didn't make it."

Amanda felt like the world had stopped spinning. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her brother, her best friend, was gone.

She fell to her knees, unable to process the news. She had just seen him a few days ago, laughing and joking with him. How could he be gone?

Amanda's family flew her to her hometown for the funeral. The days passed in a blur of grief and tears. Amanda tried to hold herself together for her family's sake, but she felt like she was drowning.

When it was time for Amanda to return home, she found herself dreading the flight. The thought of being trapped in a metal tube for hours with nothing but her thoughts was unbearable.

As she boarded the plane, she felt a sense of dread. She tried to focus on her breathing, but it was no use. The memories of her brother flooded her mind, and she felt a lump form in her throat.

During the flight, Amanda cried uncontrollably. The other passengers tried to give her space, but she couldn't stop the tears. She felt like she was falling apart.

As the plane descended for landing, Amanda wiped her tears and took a deep breath. She knew she had to be strong for her family, but she didn't know how.

As she stepped off the plane, Amanda felt like a shell of her former self. The world seemed darker, and the future uncertain. She knew that she would never be the same again. Her heart was broken, and she wasn't sure if it would ever heal.
