The Wish Tree
A young boy discovers an old tree in the forest that grants him one wish per year.

When Noah first wandered into the forest behind his home, it was out of sheer curiosity. The forest was dense, the trees towering above him like ancient sentinels, and the air smelled of moss and earth. It wasn’t a place children typically explored. The older folks in his village had always spoken of it with caution, warning of the mysterious things that lurked beneath its canopy. But Noah, being no stranger to adventure, had never been one to heed warnings.
That afternoon, the sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue on the forest floor. Noah, with his backpack full of snacks and a worn map his father had drawn years ago, ventured deeper than he ever had before. The path was narrow, the brush thick with thorns and tangled vines, but Noah pushed on, eager to uncover something unknown.
It wasn’t long before he stumbled upon it.
The tree stood alone in a clearing, its twisted branches stretching high above, as if reaching for the sky itself. Its bark was a deep shade of silver, and the roots spiraled out in all directions, covering the earth beneath. The tree was ancient, older than anything Noah had ever seen. It was unlike any tree in the forest, and its presence felt almost... otherworldly.
Noah approached it slowly, his heart pounding with excitement and unease. He reached out to touch its bark, and the moment his fingers made contact, a warmth spread through him. It was as if the tree itself was alive, aware of his presence.
Suddenly, a deep voice echoed in his mind. You have found me, young one. I am the Wish Tree. I can grant you one wish every year, but choose wisely.
Noah pulled his hand away, startled by the voice, but the tree stood silent and still, its branches rustling softly in the wind. For a moment, he thought he might have imagined it. But the voice came again, more clear this time. I can grant you anything you desire. A wish for happiness, wealth, strength, or knowledge. What is it that you seek?
Noah was overwhelmed by the offer. A wish. One wish, every year. His mind raced with the possibilities. He could wish for anything. What did he want? The thought of wealth and riches crossed his mind, but he quickly pushed it aside. That wasn’t what he truly wanted. What he desired most was something deeper. Something that would change his life forever.
“I wish for the ability to help others,” he said aloud, his voice steady. “I want to make a difference.”
The tree seemed to hum in response, its branches swaying as if in approval. Your wish is granted, it said. From this day forward, you will have the power to bring about positive change in the lives of others. Use it wisely, young one.
Noah stood in awe, unsure of what had just happened. He could feel a strange energy flowing through him, a sense of purpose that hadn’t been there before. It was as if the world around him had shifted, and he was now connected to something much greater than himself.
As he made his way back home that evening, Noah couldn’t shake the feeling that he had just been given an extraordinary gift. But what would he do with it? How could he use his newfound power to help others? He didn’t know, but he was determined to find out.
The years passed, and every year on his birthday, Noah returned to the tree. Each time, he made a new wish, and each time, the tree granted it. He wished for wisdom, for courage, for strength, and for the ability to heal. With each wish, he grew older, more experienced, and more capable of making a difference.
One year, when Noah was sixteen, he returned to the tree with a heavy heart. He had seen so much suffering in the world—hunger, disease, war—and he felt helpless to stop it. His previous wishes had given him the tools he needed, but the problems of the world seemed insurmountable.
“I wish for the world to be a better place,” he said, his voice filled with desperation. “I want to end the suffering. I want everyone to be happy.”
The tree’s response was not immediate. The branches rustled, and for a moment, Noah wondered if he had asked for too much. Then the voice came again, softer this time. Your wish is granted, but remember, change takes time. It is not in one wish alone that the world will be transformed, but in the small actions of many. You must be patient.
Noah left the clearing with a renewed sense of purpose. He knew the path ahead would be difficult, but he had learned that true change didn’t happen overnight. It was the small, everyday acts of kindness and compassion that made the difference. He set out to make the world a better place, one person at a time.
As he grew older, Noah used his gifts to heal, to guide, and to help others. He became known as a healer, a wise counselor, and a friend to those in need. His name spread far and wide, and people came from all corners of the world to seek his help. But despite all the accolades and praise, Noah remained humble. He never forgot the tree that had given him the power to make a difference.
Years turned into decades, and Noah continued to use his wishes for the betterment of others. But one day, when he returned to the tree on his sixtieth birthday, he found it was no longer the same. The bark was faded, the roots withered, and the once-vibrant leaves had turned to dust. The tree was dying.
Noah knelt beside it, his heart heavy with sadness. “What happened?” he whispered. “What can I do?”
The voice, now faint and fragile, answered him. You have used your wishes well, young one. But now, it is time for you to make your own way. The power I gave you is no longer needed. You have become the change you wished for.
With that, the tree fell silent. Noah stayed by its side, feeling the weight of the years that had passed. He realized that the true magic had never been in the wishes. It had always been in him—the ability to create change through love, compassion, and the will to do good.
And so, Noah walked away from the tree, his heart full of gratitude. He knew that the world was a better place because of his actions, and that was all the magic he ever needed.
