It was a stormy day. The siren's went off and a tsunami was coming. I grabbed all that I could and stuffed it in my backpack. I went to my room and put on my mother's heart shaped locket. My head was noisy. I had no time for this. "Well, you're gonna make time for us! Or I will cut you up and burn your arms!"
I lost my mom when I was six. I remember her putting on the locket around my neck. as saying goodbye. The last I heard was that she died by suicide on an on coming train. Tragic.
I grabbed my backpack and went to my jeep. Got to get to higher ground. I picked up a lady on the side of the road. "Hey, what's your name? Mine's Rebecca". "I'm Shirley" she responded. We drove up to Three Thumbs mountain in silence. "You should throw her out on the road while the truck is going, hehe" "Yah, we could role the wheel over her and watch her roll." I just continued to drive. I picked up another lady "Hey, you need a lift?" "Yah man! Thanks for stopping! Name's Jennifer!" I introduced myself and Shirley. "Where ya from" Jennifer continued. "We're from Liliha." I answered. "Have you seen the water? it's really out there! Kinda scary!"
"This one is not so bad. Maybe we'll kill her fast and get it done and over with fast!" "The other one with the short arm we should chop to little bits and pieces." STOP!!!! "So Jennifer, how long do you think we have? I think we'll be safe in about 30 minutes, what'd you think?" "Yah, I think we have about 30 minutes at least. We need to pick up speed." She added. Shirley began rustling "What's taking so long?" "Kill her! Kill her! Kill her!" "Look, I'm trying to get us up to higher ground and so is everyone else. I think I know of a route that will take us there faster. Hold on!"
As we rolled into Three Thumbs mountain, I noticed it was practically empty. Almost to earie, I wondered if we needed to get to higher ground? I asked Jennifer what she thought. "I think we're high enough." "Ok, let's get packing and hike up that mountain!" A voice inside me jingled. The sirens went off again, only this time it didn't stop. We looked at eachother and began running up the mountain! "There's a safe house once we get to the top!" I yelled
It took us two hours to get to the top. We looked down and all we saw was water in town. No one could have survived that! "We'll have to settle in here for the night ladies" said Jennifer. Shirley just rolled her eyes. I looked at them with a worried look........I touched my locket.
"Whoooo hooooo, it's time to party! Let's go exploring! Besides I gotta go pee like shit!" Shirley stared at us like "What's going on with you?" we announced "You're dreaming, go back to sleep!" He put a knife to his neck, she quickly pulled her jacket over her head. "What the hell?" as he stepped outside. The mountain was surrounded by water. He had no place to go. "Oh no!" said a quiet voice inside. All of a sudden we heard a big rumble then the ground began to move from under us and we all fell to the ground. "Earthquake!" yelled Jennifer The water receeded back to the ocean. "OK, we're in big trouble! There's another tsunami coming!" piped up Rebecca. "We have no place to go. We just have to sit it out and hope for the best!" I noticed there were no siren's going off this time. I wonder if anyone has out lived this down there. It's so cold. We need to warm up and I'm starting to get hungry. Well let's get some sleep and figure things out in the morning.
We all awoke around 8'ish. "Where'd all the water go?" asked Jennifer. "I don't know. Maybe back out to sea." I said. "So we need food and we need to keep warm. We need to go back into town." Shirley piped in "I'm hungry." "We all are and that's what we are discussing right now." I irritatedly shouted back! "Let's go!" As we hiked down the mountain I started wondering if my jeep would start. Or if it was even there!
We finally got to the Jeep and it started! Yahoo! We got wheels! I heard a loud voice inside. As we made into town, we saw trees down, few people wondering, many dead laying in the street. "Oooooo dead bodies, let's go carve them out and see what we can find! A nice pearl maybe!" I was trying to keep him inside. We don't do carved out bodies you idiot!
We looked at the fence where people hung missing loved ones one caught my eye. Could it really be? I called the number on the picture.
"Gary?" "I saw a picture of my mother on the fence. Has she been alive all this time?" I asked. "Who's this?" he asked."I'm Rebecca, Rae's daughter." "Oh wow, we need to find her!" he added. I could feel the heat rise to my head. I quickly hung up. If she only knew what I have gone through in her absence and what has happened because she left! She could have saved me! She could have protected me! "Hell no, she ain't having no part of our life now! We ain't looking for her! She can stay dead if all we care! I'll kill her if we see her! I'll kill her then roast her like a pig! and her husband can eat her! hehe!" "What the fuck.......WOW! This place is devastated! What about our house? Do we have a place to live? And who are we going to kill, what's going on????"
"OK, Shirley and Jennifer, help gather some food and meet here in an hour? We good?" They both agreed. I went searching for my mother. I know it was a long shot but I had a lot of questions and she had a lot of explaining to do! "We don't want to find her." a quiet voice voiced her opinion. "I can't deal with all of you right now. I've got too much on my plate. Please give me some time to figure things out." Ahhhhh peace for a moment.
As I looked for food, I tried looking for my mother. No luck. I'm actually relieved. I'm a little overwhelmed with emotions. The earth moved from under me. "Whoa, that was a small one!" Soon after I met up with the other ladies. "We got some food" said Jennifer. They both had two grocery bags full of food. Where'd you all go? "We went to a market." answered Shirley. I was starving! As we were eating an earthquake shook us so hard we jostled and rolled. The roads cracked open and Jennifer clipped an edge and I grabbed her hand just in time. I pulled her to the top. "You ok?" I asked. Jennifer was in tears "I want to go home!" "I hate to tell you, but there is no home Jennifer." I sadly answered. We finally looked around, there were cracked roads all around us. Hardly anyone around. It felt like a ghost town. "Hey, maybe we can get to my house! We can try to get there and see if it's still standing. I have an underground safehouse. And hey, we still have my Jeep!" I shared.
We made it up to my house. Thank God it was still in one piece and standing! "Look! It's still all good! Let's go!" We walked up to the house and saw that there was some broken glass and things had fallen from the earthquake. Other than that all looked good. Night was coming and we had to settle in for who knows what was coming that night.
I was tossed from my bed by a big jolt and rumbling of the earth! This was the "BIG" one! It shook what felt like forever! Part of the roof was caving in so I rolled under my bed. I heard screaming then the earthquake stopped and everything went silent! "Jennifer! Shirley!" I called out. Jennifer screamed! Shirley had a wooden beam coming straight through her. Ewwww, "Oh my god!" I shouted. Still in shock I hurried Jennifer and had her carry Shirley outside on the side where we couldn't see her dead body. After, we both sat in shock not knowing what to do next. We had three more aftershocks befoore noon. We had filled up some emptied containers full of water. We had enough to eat for about 6 days. There was nothing left in town for us, at least for now. Jennifer and I have to ride out the next few days and go from there. Life is different now. The world is different. We are different. We evolve with the new norm. I listened to the news that day. The world has a total devastation of 98%. Then the sirens went off in a distance, my head began to stir like a rush of a wave. Then I was gone.
