By Shaheed Ullah KhanPublished 2 years ago β€’ 2 min read

When Shaheed answered the call from his brother, he found himself speaking to a stranger instead. The man asked, 'Are you Javid's brother?' to which Shaheed, surprised, replied affirmatively.

Man: 'He was a site supervisor at an oil refinery.'

Shaheed: 'Yes.'

Man: 'He has been martyred in an attack on his site by terrorists. He fought bravely to save his staff and colleagues.' This news seemed unbelievable to Shaheed. He rubbed his eyes repeatedly and touched things, checking if it was a bad dream or reality because he momentarily lost his senses.

Shaheed asked the man: 'Are you sure? It can’t be true. Are you joking with me?'

Man: 'I know it's a difficult time for you, but sometimes we must accept harsh realities. We couldn't find your father's contact number, so we called you since you were in his contact history. You and your father must come to the DHQ Hospital in Talabad (a distric).'

Shaheed realized the grim reality, yet his heart refused to accept it. He stood still, reminiscing about moments with his brother, tears streaming down his face. He recalled their childhood memories, their playful fights, and the times they shared. He thought about all those past events when he was teasing him and then little shaheed becomes angry and he quarrels with him, a sweet quarrel, a symbol of love. He reminds first his school days when he was going with his brother grabbing his finger. In short, in this short time all the past events reflect to him.. His big brown eyes turned red from anger and grief, tears rolling down his cheeks.

"At this unfortunate moment, his mother approached him to inquire about his phone call. She shook him gently, as Shaheed was completely bewildered, and asked him what had happened. When Shaheed saw his mother, he was further taken aback. He didn't know how to respond, but his mother sensed from his body language that something was amiss. She repeated her question. In a shaky voice, Shaheed replied, 'Javid bhai... Javid bhai...' The caller had urged him to rush to the hospital, as Javid bhai had been injured in an attack. 'I must go to him,' Shaheed declared.

His mother, a resilient tribal woman whose life revolved around her husband and children, recognized that Shaheed was concealing the truth from her. She asked again, her voice filled with anger and sorrow, 'Tell me the full truth, tell me everything,' as tears welled up in her eyes. Shaheed embraced his mother, both consumed by grief, and they wept together. Finally, he confessed that his brother was no longer alive, that he had been mercilessly martyred, and they both broke down in tears once more.

During this time, Shaheed sensed that his mother was not responding to him. He shook her gently, asking repeatedly, 'Mother, mother...' But she remained silent, completely..."
