The Tosherman

Toshing was a dangerous and dirty job, and its what I did for work.

The sewers were often filled with toxic gases, rats, and even human waste. However, I was a tosher who had become quite skilled at my trade, developing specialized tools and techniques to navigate the dark, treacherous tunnels.

I’m Daniel Tosher. All my friends told me I was funny and should’ve been a comedian. That was back when I had friends.

Now, I was down here all day, searching the sewer for gold coins, anything silver, jewelry, and anything that might be of value that was lost.

Today was special, though. Today I had a book with me I found on my last journey. Inside the book were maps of the sewer.

I was following one of the maps. It would lead me to something special.

“Hey, Daniel,” someone shouted. I turned.

Crap. It was Talking Pete. He followed me around everywhere and always wanted to split the findings. It was only because he never found anything, I did.

“Hey Pete. I’m a bit busy today. Doing a solo mission. But I’ll see you later on, ok,” I said.

“A solo mission sounds fun! Can I come?” Pete asked.

“No,” I said bluntly.

“Awe, shucks. Why not?” Pete asked.

“Solo means alone,” I said.

I started to walk away and heard his boots slushing behind me.

“Pete, I said no,” I shouted.

He started to cry.

“Ok, Pete. How about this. I got a solo mission for you,” I said.

“Oh boy! What mission?” Pete whistled.

I grabbed a loose brick from the ground.

“I need you too see how long you can keep this brick on your foot. If you can keep it on your foot for more than an hour, that means your shoes are better then mine, and I’ll trade you,” I said smiling.

“Sure thing, Daniel. Anything for a good friend like you,” Pete squealed.

Pete was simple. I almost felt bad for Pete. Almost.

I’d give him a gold coin I’d found earlier on my way back. Then I’d be justified in not feeling bad.

I continued to scour the sewer, following the map.

Rats were everywhere. And big rats. I kicked them out of my way but there were always more.

On the way to my destination, I found a few other treasures. Mostly loose change but one good piece of jewelry.

After several hours I found the entrance I was looking for. I moved an old grate out of the way.

It was human remains. Now to follow the instructions behind the maps to reanimate them.

“Come to life and be my friends. Do as I say and the fun never ends,” was the spell.

The skeletons reanimated.

“Your first order, kill everyone in the sewer. Except for Pete. I’ll reanimate them too. Your second order, find all the treasure in the sewer and give it to me,” I said.

I guess this was a real witches book after all.

You conjured some sympathy for Talking Pete, which required some magic in itself!

This is interesting, you developed a character and built a world in so few words. Then you added excitement and suspense at the end making us want more. I really enjoyed this plot and story line.
