The Time Of Monsters
Monsters Of Propaganda

Things that linger in between the new and what has passed
the monsters in our dreams have come to life
No telling just how long this nightmare is bound to last
good and evil, cutting ties, just like a knife
Gone are the days of taking turns
cause, mine, means more than yours
Sit back and watch the bridges burn
while we stand, holding the cure
The monsters we created, are now devouring us
we want the change, but we don't want to change
The blame lies in the laps of everybody else
extinguishing friendships, we have chosen to estrange

I hope this doesn't put a strain on our relationship, for I know not your political leanings, but while reading this I couldn't help but grieve for the Republican Party where I once claimed my roots. While much of what you've written could apply to all of us, including both major parties in the United States, it takes me most completely to 1968 & Nixon's Southern Strategy. Having won the battle for equal rights, Democrats finally embracing the cause, Nixon saw an opportunity. By appealing to continuing racism & rather freshly reopened wounds in the South, he could flip that block which had long be held by Democrats to become a Republican stronghold instead. He may very well have thought it would cause little harm, just appealing to it once. But every election cycle since then the GOP has become more & more dependent upon the energized support of the radical right. There was always the excuse that they weren't being racist broadcasting "Willie Horton" ads nonstop, just raising issues. But by 2016 it was explicit. Racial hatred, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, etc. were brought front & center with Donald Trump. The monster the party had created has now devoured it &, as I told my sister-in-law after the election of 2016, "The only thing Republican about Donald Trump is that it was the Republic that elected him, not the people." You may be absolutely horrified that this is how your poem spoke to me, & you may never speak to me again. But I thought I'd share it anyway. Regardless of your intent, thank you for writing this, Kelli. As you might have noticed, it spoke to me dearly.
Great one ❤️😉📝
Great observational poem. Truth told. 🥰
