The Three Worlds

Earth 2102

By Art SoteloPublished 5 years ago 7 min read

By 2102, the polar ice caps have melted, and sea levels have risen, forcing the earth to become a watery wasteland.

Floating around the outer atmosphere, the Horizon space station is shaped like a giant circular tower with sections dividing the departments. A large glass donut section is one giant swimming pool. Another Section has several small windows for the luxury suites. A large greenhouse section is the farming and livestock department. The main hanger bay is the large middle section connected to the planet with a cone-shaped elevator. The station rotates to simulate gravity. Robots manage the cargo bay because there is no gravity due to its connection to the elevator.

The cargo bay doors slide open as a small blue ball comes bouncing through, following quickly behind are the clicking of a pair of small shoes against the metal floor chasing the ball. The small blue ball ricochets off the containers of supplies, bouncing between many of the largest metal boxes finally wedging itself in between an open container full of old antiquities from the old earth. A little girl dressed in a blue space suit with yellow clips holding up her blond ponytails searches throughout the containers looking for her ball. As she gets close to finding the ball, the cargo bay doors slide open again. In walks a dirty and tried crew member, and he sees the girl, “what are you doing in here? This is not a play area. You need to go back to your class department,” he tells the girl as he guides her to the door. She gives him a dirty look and says, “my parents said I can do what I want, they helped to build this station. They are not going to be happy.” The girl exits the cargo room, and the doors close, and the crewmember walks back to the containers; he talks to himself, “little shit, fucking first class.” After a quick check of the container, he sees the ball but doesn’t care, so he closes the top, and the blue ball moves to reveal a shiny gold heart-shaped locket. He walks back to the control panel near the door and clicks the communicator, “cargo room 6 is ready for departure.” He exits the room and the doors behind seal with an extra pair of doors and a red light brighten the room. Suddenly the room drops. The elevator room drops incredibly fast speeding towards the Earth. The planet is now mostly water with only an area of land left in view.

The elevator flashes past the constantly erupting volcano which has a fusion station attached with many electrical cables attached. The elevator comes to a sudden stop as it reaches the island. The door opens quickly and a robotic forklift drives in grabs four containers at a time. The robot moves the containers around the base, passing robot and human soldiers, tanks, and other military vehicles. As the robot is about to get to its final stop, an alarm goes off, and then an explosion happens along the shoreline. The robots continue to work as the marines and combat robots (CR6) rush to man their battle positions. As the cloud of smoke clears, the Ocean raider ships appear in the distance and fire their missiles onto the island. The forklift robot is hit by a missile causing it to explode, throwing the containers everywhere. The earth artifacts container breaks open and spreading its items across the floor.

The Ocean raider launches their landing boats punching against the oncoming waves. The beach is full of automatic gun turrets, drone tanks, and several CR6s. The landing boats launch cluster missiles spreading little pellets across the beach exploding as the boats quickly reach the beachhead. The boats crash upon the sand and open their doors; the raiders jump out and sprint toward the base. A battalion of CR6 sprints toward the beach from the base. The boats pop out their heavy guns and mowed down the CR6s. The raiders sprint up the beachhead, stop and fire a volley of grenades into the base, causing a cluster of explosions. The raiders enter the base and kill as many marines as they can. The raiders tag the containers with sensors and gather up all the supplies they can. The landing boats launch robotic flatbeds that quickly enter the based and grab the containers that are tagged with the sensors. The raiders are attacked by reinforced marines from across the island, while Raider Jeffery Lane discovers the damaged container of old earth artifacts when he sees the heart-shaped locket lying on the floor. He picks it up quickly as bullets scream past his head. The elevator doors open as a large group of Marines sprint out, firing their weapons, forcing the raiders to retreat. The flatbed robots quickly return back to the boats. Lane sprints back to the boat taking a shot into his right shoulder, causing him to fall into the boat. The boats return to the main Ships, and the Ocean raider heads back out to sea.

Onboard the main Ocean raider ship, Lane is being treated in the medical room by nurse Sarah Rose, who discovers the locket in his pocket, she looks at it quickly but is interrupted and puts it in her pocket. Lane screams out in pain, Sarah grabs his hand. The doctors rush in and being to work on Lane’s shoulder and the Sarah gets the equipment they need. Lane lays down and is put under.

The door swings open as Sarah looks exhausted from a long day; her daughter, Milly, runs up to her, “Wheres daddy?” she asked her. “He is in medical they are fixing him up, he got a little hurt,” she tells her. “But don’t worry, he will be ok.”He holds out her hands and says, “what is it, mommy?” Sarah hands her the locket from her pocket,

Massive hurricane ravages across the ocean, slamming right into the Ocean Raider fleet. The storm rocks the enormous ship causing it to shake and sway back and forth. The ship’s hull cracks open when suddenly water comes rushing in, filling the compartmenWhilehile holding their daughtSarah and Lane er, run out of their cabin into the hall as the water comes rushing around them. The water engulfs them carrying them through the long corridor slamming Lane and Sarah against the bulkhead door. Lane tried to open the door, but they are all running out of air. Lane wraps his arms around Sarah and Milly as they drop to the floor, Milly’s hand falls open and the heart-shaped locket gets washed away.

The sea bed shakes as the sand kicks up cascade off the wreckage of the ocean raider medical ship displaying a large whole showing the interworkings of the ship. Bright light from the salvage submarine eliminates the hallway exposing the remains of Lane still holding on to Sarah and Milly. The salvage sub launches its drones to investigates the wreckages. The drones enter the ship and separate in different directions. Onboard the salvage sub, Jake Williams, check the monitors to scan to see what the drone is viewing. One of the drones swims nears Lane, and the camera scan over the bodies; the locket comes into view, and it catches the eye of Jake. He quickly stops the drone and zones the camera on the locket. He clicks on a button for the drone to launch its arms. The robot arm reaches out and grabs the locket, and puts it into the storage room. He recalls back the drone with the locket as the other drones continue to search the ship. The drone docks and drops the locket into the slot that delivers the locket into the control room. The small compartment opens, and the locket appears. Jake grabs the locket and examines it, he has never seen anything like it before, he has found jewelry, even other types of trash, but this heart-shaped locket seems to be like something else, it’s special. This item meant something to someone. Jake is able to open the locket that shows two small pictures, one woman and one man, very old in black and white. Jake has seen black and white photos only a few times in his life. The computer signals that the drones have completed their scans of the ship and have filled their storage bins, so they can return to the ship. He closes the locket and places it in his pocket. As the drones dock back into the salvage sub, heads back out into the abyss.

The salvage sub arrives at the grand underwater city, a replica of New York city encased in a dome; the docking bay doors open and the sub enters. The salvage sub docks into position, Jake disembarks the sub and heads to the open market in the middle of the central park. The market is full of small business vendors trying to sell their created or found items. Jake travels there the maze of vendors mostly window shopping and occasionally picking up a snack here and there. He finally reaches his destination, an elderly woman who is selling antiques from the old world. Jake greets the old woman, “Hello, Mary. I think I finally found something that will get your attention.” Mary struggles to her feet and grabs her cane as she gets close to the table, she looks up and says, “what do you have for me, asshole?” With so much excitement Jake reaches into his pocket and pulls out the locket, he reveals it to Mary and he can’t stop smiling. Mary gets very close then pulls back; she then goes to a box and places it in front of Jake. “Open it,” she says quickly. Jake is confused, but he quickly opens the box and is surprised to see a bunch of lockets. “No, Mary, it’s not because it’s a locket. You need to see what’s inside the locket,” he replies. She snatches the locket out of his hand and cracks it open. She stares at the pictures, as tears run down her face and her hands begin to shake. “So I did good this time,” Jake says with a smile. Mary gently grabs his hand and says, “Thank you.”
