"THE TEST OF TRUTH: A PRINCESS BETRAYED"
THE ROOT OF LIES IS NOT DEEP AND ITS HOLE VERY SHALOW
Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Warkaka, there lived a princess whose beauty and grace were unmatched. Her name was Princess Latifa, and she was admired throughout the land for her kindness, intelligence, and wisdom. People came from distant lands just to catch a glimpse of her, hoping that one day they might win her heart. Yet, Princess Latifa was not easily swayed by flattery or appearances; she longed to marry someone who possessed integrity, courage, and a heart as noble as hers.
Within the royal court, however, were two council members who had grown fixated on her beauty. They were men of ambition and pride—Lord Kalik and Lord Kael—both powerful in their own right but lacking the character that Latifa sought in a companion. Though they had made countless attempts to woo her with their wealth and influence, Latifa was always polite but distant, for she had seen their self-centered ways and knew their hearts lacked the sincerity she cherished.
Offended by her rejection, Kalik and Kael grew bitter, their admiration turning into resentment. One day, they concocted a wicked plan. If Princess Latifa would not return their affection, they would ruin her reputation, tarnishing her honor and forcing her to leave the royal court in shame. Fueled by jealousy, they plotted to attack her when she was alone, intending to overpower her. But their plan did not go as they had hoped.
One afternoon, as Princess Latifa took a solitary walk in the palace gardens, Kalik and Kael waited for the right moment to approach her. However, as they drew near, a guard spotted them lurking suspiciously. Startled, they realized they could be caught and severely punished if their intentions were discovered. Thinking quickly, they devised another scheme: they would raise an alarm, accusing the princess of having tried to seduce them instead.
Rushing to the main hall, they fell to their knees before the king, breathing heavily, their faces filled with mock terror. “Your Majesty!” Kalik cried, casting a look of false shame. “We did not want to believe it ourselves, but the princess… she tried to compromise us!”
The king’s face hardened in shock. He looked between the two men, his eyes dark with anger. “What do you mean?” he demanded, his voice sharp. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Kael quickly joined in. “It’s true, Your Majesty. We were in the gardens when she approached us, speaking in a manner most unbecoming of a princess. She… she tried to seduce us both. We barely managed to escape her advances.”
The court was silent, and all eyes turned to Princess Latifa as she was called into the hall to hear the accusations. Her face was stricken with disbelief and shock, but her calm, dignified presence remained unshaken. She denied the accusations firmly, yet her words were drowned out by the insistence of the two councilmen, who seemed to have every detail prepared. Their story was cunningly woven, and with their esteemed positions in the council, they appeared credible.
The king, torn by the conflicting accounts, was grieved and uncertain. He knew his daughter well but feared that the two men’s consistent accounts might sway public opinion if left uninvestigated. Determined to reach the truth, the king thought carefully and devised a plan.
After a moment’s thought, he addressed the councilmen and Princess Latifa with calm authority. “We will investigate this matter thoroughly,” he declared. “I have no intention of allowing injustice to take root in my kingdom. The guilty will be found, and they will be punished.”
He ordered the two councilmen to be taken to separate cells in the palace dungeons. Then, calling upon his most trusted advisor, he laid out his plan: he would question each man individually to see if their stories held up under scrutiny.
First, he went to Kalik’s cell. The king looked him straight in the eyes, his expression calm but intense. “Tell me, Lord Kalik, at what time did Princess Latifa supposedly approach you in the gardens?”
Kalik, confident in his response, quickly answered, “It was in the morning, Your Majesty. Around ten o’clock. I remember clearly, as the sun was just above the treetops.”
The king nodded, concealing his reaction. He then left Kalik’s cell and made his way to Kael, who was waiting nervously. The king’s voice was as calm as before. “And you, Lord Kael,” he said. “At what time did this incident with the princess occur?”
Kael, thinking he and Kalik had convinced the king of their story, answered confidently. “It happened in the afternoon, Your Majesty, at about two o’clock. I remember the sun was casting long shadows in the gardens.”
The king’s eyes narrowed. He thanked Kael without revealing anything and returned to the throne room, where Princess Latifa was waiting, her eyes red from holding back tears. He stood before the court and addressed them in a voice that was both calm and resolute.
“My people,” he began, “it is now clear to me who speaks the truth and who is guilty of deceit. I have questioned both Lord Kalik and Lord Kael separately, and their stories do not match. One claimed the incident took place in the morning, the other in the afternoon. They cannot even agree on the hour at which this supposed incident occurred. Their lies are transparent, and their conspiracy against my daughter has been exposed.”
A murmur spread through the hall as the truth settled over the people. Kalik and Kael were brought before the king, their faces pale and stricken. They tried to plead for mercy, claiming they had been confused, but the king’s gaze was cold and unforgiving.
“You have not only conspired against an innocent soul but against the honor of this kingdom and the integrity of this court,” the king said, his voice like steel. “Such treachery cannot be allowed to go unpunished. You will both be stripped of your titles and sent to exile, never to return to this land.”
The guards led the two disgraced councilmen away as the court watched in silence. Princess Latifa, relieved yet saddened by the betrayal, thanked her father for his wisdom and unwavering faith in justice.
The king then addressed his people once more. “Let this be a lesson to all: when lies and deception are used to harm the innocent, the truth will always find a way to emerge. In my kingdom, there will be no place for treachery or dishonor. The wise uphold justice, and in doing so, we protect the honor of our people.”
The story of the false accusations and the king’s clever questioning spread through the kingdom, and from that day forward, the people of War-kaka held an even deeper respect for their king. They learned that truth would always prevail and that honor and integrity were more valuable than status or influence. And Princess Latifa, having seen her father’s wisdom in action, continued to live with grace and dignity, knowing that her kingdom was one that valued justice above all else.
