The Story of Arthur Gordon Pim from Nantucket
Arthur Gordon Beam's novel from Nantucket is the only completed novel published by the famous American horror writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Pim begins his story by noting his respectable upbringing on the island of Nantucket, and that as a young man he went away to school in New Bedford and there he met his best friend, Augustus Barnard, son of a sea captain, and Augustus was able to cultivate a love of the sea within Pim and the two spent time sailing, but in one In the evenings they were drunk and decided to sail in the Pim schooner, but they were almost killed during a storm but fortunately they were rescued by a whaling ship called the Penguin, and when they returned safely to land they decided to keep it a secret.
However, this adventure does not deter Pim from his increasing desire to go to sea. On the contrary, he is lost more in the life of the sea, and his suspense increases with the tales he hears from Augustus. Augustus tells Pim that his father, Captain Barnard, is scheduled to lead an expedition in the ship Grampus and that he and Pim should go with him.
Pim faces rejection from his family but decides to go and hide on the ship for three days until the ship begins to set sail and waits for them to be at sea until he reveals himself to the captain and crew.
Pym was relatively comfortable in confinement for a few days, but worried about his tendency to sleep for long hours and bewildered that Augustus had not visited him, his supplies were running out and the noxious fumes in the custody were beginning to warp his thinking.
At one point, he thought he was being attacked by a malicious creature, but it turned out that it was his dog Tigger who somehow managed to get on board.
He finds with Tiger a note attached to it, and after much effort, Pym is able to elicit some ominous words from Augustus.
Finally, after a terrible time, Augustus visits Pim and tells him that a mutiny had taken place on the ship as soon as it set sail, that most of the men had either been killed or escaped from the ship and that he was bound by the mutiny's captain, but because he was his friend he decided to untie him and let him roam.
The only "good" rebel in Grampus seems to be a half-American man named Dirk Peters who is kind to Augustus and doesn't want the ship to venture into piracy. Pim listens to this tale with amazement and agrees with Augustus that he will continue to hide so as not to be hurt.
After the time has passed, Dirk Peters tells Augustus that he wishes to recover the ship and hopes the young man will help him.
Augustus immediately agrees and informs Peters of Beam's presence. The three devise a plan to seize the ship and succeed in it. They also decide to pardon one of the rebels, Richard Parker, when he asks for mercy.
Unfortunately, this victory occurs during a great storm approaching the destruction of the ship, and when it calmed, Augustus had been wounded in the arm, and the storm deprived them of food and water.
Day after day, thirsty and hungry on the hull of their collapsed ship, vacillating between hope and despair, they try to dive into the water-filled storage room to find provisions but only manage to get a little.
Their time in Grampus becomes more sad, but they feel joy when they find another ship coming towards them and they believe that they will be rescued, but their joy turns to utter horror after they discover that it is a ship inhabited only by dead bodies and the putrid smell.
Parker proposes to them to draw a lottery "straw drawing" to choose a man from among them to sacrifice his life by saving the rest, by eating it, when the lottery Parker gets the shortest straw and the rest eat it.
Augustus then dies of his wounds, but then another ship finds Pim and Peters and rescues them.
This ship is led by Captain Guy, a smart but somewhat weak man, the two men recover fully and enjoy their time on this ship as it sails from island to island, exploring interesting cargo, until the crew decides that the ship will advance south towards the South Pole.
This mysterious journey through the uncharted waters enchants Pim , where he sees icebergs, the strange white corpse of a frozen animal, icy whirlwinds, bears and thousands of birds.
Pim advises the commander to return soon because their fuel is running out and some of the men are showing signs of scurvy, but Jay thinks he has to go on for a few more days.
The ship eventually reached a number of large islands with thick forests, and while the ship was staying in the middle of the reef they were surprised to see the many boats carrying black citizens heading towards them carrying batons.
But they don't appear to be violent or hostile, these aborigines and captain tang occurs, and the aborigines find the complexion of the white men a bit worrisome but excited about the other things on board.
A shrewd Aboriginal captain invites the crew to visit their island village. The crew decides to accept the invitation. Jay decides to stay for a week to fish for sea cucumbers. Some of the crew members decide to go to a party inside the village, but some of the crew refuse to leave the ship.
During the crew's trip to the village, Pim admires the geological nature of the area and decides to explore it with Peters, while the rest of the crew is heading to the village, a turbulence occurs and the ship's crew is buried under the rubble, Pim believes that the natives orchestrated the collapse.
He is sure when he sees that they are attacking the remaining crew on the ship, and after a while he sees that the ship has exploded and the crew died, along with about 1000 men from the indigenous people.
Pym and Peters try to find a way to escape and suffer from a lack of food and water, then get into fights with the natives and manage to escape in a boat after capturing an aboriginal man.
At sea, Pym and Peters decided to go south in the hope of finding land, and their captive was docile and gave the name of the island they had left, and the boat approached the South Pole, the colour became white, covering everything, and the captive was afraid of everything white, and eventually dies of the fear.
As they sail through the mist, a high white object looms before them, and here ends the narration of the story with a note from the editor “Boo” that Pim died many years after his journey, and it is possible that the last chapters of his story are lost, while Peters is still alive He lives in Illinois but cannot access it.
