The Song of the Starless Sea

A Journey Through the Depths of Forgotten Dreams

By Mirhadi TahsinPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

The world had been dark for as long as anyone could remember. The stars had vanished centuries ago, leaving the sky an endless void. The oceans, once teeming with life, had turned to ink—a vast, black expanse that reflected nothing but the emptiness above.

Lira was a musician, though there was little music left in the world. She lived in a small coastal village, where the people had learned to survive in the gloom. They told stories of the stars, of a time when the sky was filled with light, but to Lira, they were just that—stories.

One day, while exploring the ruins of an ancient temple on the edge of the village, Lira found something that would change her life forever. It was a harp, unlike any she had ever seen. Its frame was made of a shimmering, silvery metal, and its strings glowed faintly, as if they held a piece of the forgotten stars.

When Lira plucked a string, the sound was unlike anything she had ever heard. It was a melody that seemed to come from another world, filled with light and hope. As the notes echoed through the ruins, the ink-black sea began to ripple, and a figure emerged from the depths.

It was a man, though he was unlike anyone Lira had ever met. His skin was pale, almost translucent, and his eyes glowed with the same faint light as the harp’s strings. He introduced himself as Kael, a sailor who had been lost to the sea long ago.

“The harp you hold is the Celestial Lyre,” Kael said, his voice soft and melodic. “It is the last remnant of the stars, and it holds the power to restore light to the world. But the journey will be dangerous, and the sea is not what it seems.”

Lira hesitated. She had never left the village, let alone ventured onto the starless sea. But the thought of bringing light back to the world filled her with a sense of purpose she had never known.

With Kael as her guide, Lira set out on a voyage across the ink-black ocean. The Celestial Lyre was their compass, its melodies guiding them through the darkness. As they traveled, Lira learned to play the harp, each note summoning a fragment of the lost stars.

But the journey was not without peril. The sea was home to creatures born of the darkness—shadowy beings that sought to drag them into the depths. Kael fought them off with a blade made of starlight, but each encounter left him weaker, his glow dimming with every battle.

One night, as they sailed through a particularly dark stretch of sea, Lira asked Kael about his past.

“I was once a sailor, like many others,” he said, his voice tinged with sadness. “But when the stars vanished, the sea claimed me. I became a part of it, a guardian of the last light. I have waited for someone like you, Lira—someone who can bring the stars back.”

Lira’s heart ached for Kael. She had come to care for him, and the thought of losing him was unbearable. But she knew their mission was greater than either of them.

As they approached the heart of the starless sea, the darkness grew thicker, almost suffocating. The Celestial Lyre’s glow was the only thing keeping them from being consumed. Finally, they reached a massive, swirling vortex—a portal to the place where the stars had been taken.

“This is it,” Kael said, his voice barely a whisper. “You must play the Lyre here, and the stars will return. But the darkness will try to stop you.”

Lira nodded, her hands trembling as she placed them on the harp’s strings. She began to play, the melody rising above the roar of the vortex. The darkness surged around them, but Kael stood firm, his blade cutting through the shadows.

As the final note rang out, the vortex exploded with light. The stars burst forth, filling the sky with their brilliance. The ink-black sea turned to crystal blue, reflecting the newfound light.

But Kael was gone.

Lira fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. She had brought light back to the world, but at a great cost.

As she sat on the deck of the ship, the stars above seemed to twinkle with a familiar warmth. And in their light, Lira thought she could see Kael’s face, smiling down at her.

The world was no longer starless, and neither was her heart.
