The Silent Neighbor
What happens when the person next door is never quite who you think they are.

The First Impression
When Sarah moved into her new apartment, she thought she had found the perfect place. It was affordable, close to her job, and in a quiet neighborhood. Her unit was small but cozy, with a balcony that overlooked the courtyard.
Only one thing stood out: her neighbor.
The man in Apartment 3B introduced himself briefly when she moved in. His name was Daniel. He was polite but distant, speaking only a few words before retreating back inside. Sarah didn’t think much of it. Some people are private, she told herself.
But as the weeks passed, she noticed things about Daniel that didn’t add up.
The Odd Routine
Daniel never seemed to leave during the day. His blinds were always drawn. At night, though, Sarah could hear faint noises from his apartment: the scrape of furniture, the hum of low voices, sometimes even footsteps pacing back and forth.
She tried not to pry, but curiosity grew. One evening, while watering her balcony plants, she noticed his window cracked open. A strange odor drifted out, sharp and metallic, like rust or iron.
That same night, the pacing started again -- heavy footsteps that continued until dawn.
The Warning
Sarah mentioned it casually to the landlord, half-joking that her neighbor must be a vampire with his nocturnal schedule. The landlord chuckled nervously and said, “Daniel’s been here a long time. He pays on time. Best not to worry about him.”
It was the way he said it -- clipped, dismissive -- that made Sarah uneasy.
The next morning, as she left for work, she found a note slipped under her door. It was written in neat block letters:
“Do not ask about me again.”
Her heart skipped. Who could have written it?
The Disappearance
Weeks later, one of the other tenants, an elderly woman from 2A, disappeared. The police came knocking, asking if anyone had seen her. Sarah mentioned she’d last noticed the woman chatting near the mailboxes.
When they asked Daniel, he shrugged. “Didn’t see her.”
But Sarah noticed something unsettling. His hands — pale, bony — had fresh scratches on them, as if he had been in a struggle.
That night, the pacing returned. Louder. More frantic.
The Breaking Point
Sarah couldn’t sleep. She pressed her ear against the wall. The noises grew clearer -- dragging, like something heavy being pulled across the floor. Then, silence.
The next day, Daniel’s blinds remained shut, but Sarah swore she saw a shape behind them. A tall figure, standing perfectly still, watching.
Her phone buzzed with another note slipped under her door:
“You should move.”
The Aftermath
Sarah broke her lease within the month. She never saw Daniel again. Later, she read an article online: Apartment 3B was found abandoned. Inside, police discovered claw marks along the floorboards and deep gouges in the walls, as if something had tried to escape.
Daniel was never located. Some said he skipped town. Others whispered darker theories.
To this day, Sarah avoids mentioning his name. And when she tells the story, she always ends with the same warning:
“Never ignore the noises next door.”
