"The Secret We Do not Share"

Eliot had always sensed that something about her—about him—was unusual. Lily would not talk much about it, but whenever someone inquired about her family, she would quickly grin or change the topic. Since Eliot had met Lily, there had always been a certain calm about her that made her seem impervious to criticism, like a secret just waiting to be revealed.

Eliot did not realize until the evening of the school dance. He had been observing Lily all evening, her lips twisted in a little, enigmatic smile as her dark gaze scanned the throng. She vanished into the darkness close to the rear of the gym when the music changed to something languid and dreamy. With each stride, Eliot's curiosity grew as he followed intuitively.

With her back to him, he discovered her standing by the ancient windows by herself. He tried to seem casual when he inquired, "You okay?" but his nervousness showed. Even though he had always adored Lily from a distance, something felt different now. The truth was what he needed to know.

He heard Lily's breath catch as if she were resisting something, but she did not respond immediately. When she finally turned to face him, her eyes were darker than normal and held a secret. She spoke quietly but steadily, "Eliot, there is something you do not know about me." "And I am not yet ready to tell everyone about it."

Bewildered, Eliot cocked his head. "What do you mean?"

She moved closer, lifting her dress's sleeve just enough to show off an odd, swirling tattoo that encircled her wrist like ink spilling in an unintelligible pattern. It goes beyond a simple tattoo. It is a mark. An indication of my identity

Eliot's heart was pounding. "What are you saying? What does the mark stand for?

Lily's expression clenched, but she remained steadfast. Rather, she reached for the sleeve's edge and drew it back even more, revealing more of the elaborate patterns. "Eliot, my family is not like yours. We are not ordinary individuals. We—" She paused, as if thoughtfully selecting her words, "—we are guardians." We guard something old and inaccessible to the outside world. And I was selected to do that duty.

Eliot's mind was racing to catch up, so he blinked. "What are guardians of?"

"The secret of everything," Lily said in a whisper that was hardly heard over the gym's low hum. "The harmony of darkness and light." Without it, the world as we know it would not exist, but if the wrong people learn about it, everything might end.

Eliot gazed at her, attempting to comprehend the significance of her remarks. There was no dream here. Lily was not kidding. Her eyes showed it to him. The accountability. The weight.

Lily looked aside and went on, "I never wanted you to know." "I was attempting to maintain our relationship as usual. However, you are unique. I can not hide what you see.

Something tugged at Eliot's chest, a profound sense of comprehension. "So... you are telling me that you hold the power to balance the world?"

Slowly, she nodded. Yes, but it is not just my family. We are responsible for maintaining order. And occasionally, in order to preserve it, we must make sacrifices.

Eliot reflected on the rumors he had heard over the years, the whispers of odd happenings in their village, the odd disappearances. Was everything related? Had Lily anything to do with it?

Lily's face softened as she met his gaze. "I was worried that you would distance yourself, therefore I did not want to inform you. But, Eliot, I have faith in you. I have more faith in you than anyone else.

A moment went by, laden with unsaid words. Eliot's thoughts were racing as he attempted to figure out how everything fit together. Then it clicked. As he gazed at Lily, a choice began to take shape. Despite the turmoil inside, he said in a firm voice, "I do not care about the secret." "Lily, you are my best buddy. I am with you no matter what you carry or what you defend.

Lily's smile filled with relief as her eyes expanded. For the first time all night, she smiled, a real smile that extended to her eyes. "You have no idea how much that means to me."

Eliot took a step forward and extended his hand to her. "Will not we all keep the secret together?"

After hesitating, Lily grasped his hand and gave it a light squeeze. “Together.”

Eliot also felt for the first time that he was more than just standing next to her. He was a component of a greater whole. A protector in his own right.

Although the secret they held was burdensome, Eliot realized at that same moment that he would never have to bear it alone.

The conclusion.
