The Portal to Nowhere

It all began with a strange feeling, one I couldn’t shake off no matter how hard I tried. I was walking through the woods near my childhood home when I saw it: a shimmering, swirling light that appeared out of nowhere, standing just beyond the trees.

It looked like the sun had caught a fragment of a dream and wrapped it around the forest. I couldn’t help myself—I had to get closer.

As I approached, the air around me seemed to change. The sounds of the birds, the rustling leaves, and the distant hum of the world seemed to fade away.

There was an eerie stillness, like the forest was holding its breath. And there, right in front of me, stood the portal. It wasn’t like anything I had ever seen before—neither a door nor a window.

It was just a glowing light, like a ripple in the air, opening to something unknown.

I hesitated for a moment. My heart raced, and the logical part of me screamed to turn around and run.

But there was something in that light that called to me, something deep inside that whispered I needed to see what lay on the other side. So, I stepped forward, letting the light wash over me.

The moment I crossed the threshold, the world I knew vanished. I was no longer standing in the familiar woods of my hometown. Instead, I found myself in a vast, empty space—a kind of limbo.

The ground beneath me was soft, almost like walking on clouds, but there was no sky, no horizon, no stars. It was as if I had stepped into the void, where everything and nothing existed at the same time.

I looked around, disoriented, my mind racing to understand what I was seeing. There were no sounds, no people, just an endless stretch of nothingness.

The only thing that stood out was the portal behind me, still shimmering like a distant memory, but somehow out of reach. I tried to take a step back toward it, but the portal faded before my eyes.

I was trapped.

For hours—or maybe days, I couldn’t tell—the emptiness pressed in on me. I thought of home, of the people I loved, and of everything I had left behind.

The longer I stood there, the more it felt like the world was slipping away. My feet sank deeper into the soft ground, as though the very place I stood was trying to pull me down, to swallow me whole.

I wanted to scream, to shout, to cry for help. But there was no one to hear me. The silence was overwhelming.

It wasn’t the kind of quiet I had grown used to—it was a suffocating silence, a silence that made me feel more alone than I had ever felt before.

But then, something changed.

A faint light began to glow in the distance, just beyond the horizon of nothingness. It was small at first, but it grew brighter, warmer, and I couldn’t help but be drawn toward it.

My heart skipped a beat, and I began to move toward the light, my steps slow but sure. As I drew closer, I realized that it wasn’t just light—it was a figure.

The figure was a person, standing alone in the emptiness, bathed in soft, golden light. As I approached, I saw that it was a woman. Her eyes were closed, and she stood perfectly still, as if waiting for something—or someone.

She looked familiar, but I couldn’t place her face. Her hair flowed around her like a halo, and the air around her seemed to shimmer with the same light as the portal.

I stopped a few feet away, unsure of what to do. She opened her eyes, and for the briefest moment, our gazes met.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said softly, her voice echoing in the stillness.

I didn’t understand what she meant. “Who are you?” I asked, my voice trembling.

She smiled gently. “I am a guide. A keeper of the portal.”

“Portal? But where am I? What is this place?”

“This is the space between worlds,” she replied, her voice calm and soothing. “You are at a crossroads, between what was and what could be. This place is both nowhere and everywhere, a place where choices are made.”

I felt a chill run through me. Choices? I wasn’t sure I understood.

“Do I go back?” I asked, a sense of longing rising in my chest. “Back to my life?”

She nodded. “That’s your choice. But know this—you can never stay here. The portal only opens once. What you decide will shape your future.”

As her words sank in, I realized I had been given a choice I had never asked for. A chance to return to everything I knew, or to step into the unknown, into a world that might never be the same again.

I stood there for what felt like an eternity, the weight of the decision pressing on me. Finally, I took a deep breath, feeling the soft ground beneath my feet.

“I’m ready,” I whispered.

And with that, the world around me began to shift. The figure disappeared, the light faded, and I stepped back toward the place I once called home, forever changed, knowing that the portal to nowhere had given me the chance to decide who I would become.
