The Perfect Human

300 word short story.

By Chloe GilholyPublished 8 months ago 1 min read

Professor Takeshi Denki took his granddaughter to the forest. He was proud of the young woman she had become. Soon she would be an icon for youth all over the word. He was moved by how she defended those who felt they had no voice. The birds sang. The flowers and mushrooms had bloomed. He saw Yuzuko more than just a teenager; she was his heir. There would come a time where will no longer be able to walk through the trees and feel the warmth of the rising sun.

The experiments he placed on her parents (his daughter and nephew) gave him sleepless nights. He made atonement’s by embracing his granddaughter. He prayed Yuzuko would be free to be herself. At times where he felt the modern world constricted him, he explored the forest.

“This place is wonderful, Grandpa!”

Professor Denki nodded. “There is much more than just greens and brown in the forest. If you look closely you will see colours of the rainbow and more. You learn to love yourself and the world in tranquil moments like this.”

“I get it,” Yuzuko said. She seemed to be one of the few people who understood his wisdom. She picked up a white flower and spun it in her hand. “We are who we are and we can’t change ourselves for anybody.”

“Once you learn to embrace yourself, whatever the world throws a you won’t matter.”

“Do you really think the world would accept me?” Yuzuko asked, looking up.

“It dosen’t matter.” Professor Denki hugged her. “Mother Nature will always welcome you. I will always welcome you.”

“Thank you.”

“One day, this will all be yours.”

He spent decades trying to create the perfect human. It took him way to long to figure out that he had already succeeded.

This story is really something. The professor's relationship with his granddaughter is touching. It makes me think about how we often search for perfection externally when it might be right in front of us. Like him, have you ever spent a long time chasing something only to realize it was already there? And what do you think Yuzuko's journey will be like now that she has this new understanding?

  • Such an endearing story! I love this part: “Do you really think the world would accept me?” Yuzuko asked, looking up. “It dosen’t matter.” Professor Denki hugged her. “Mother Nature will always welcome you. I will always welcome you.”
