The sun had barely risen over the sleepy town of Millfield, as Emily woke up with a heavy heart. Today was the day she had been dreading for weeks, the day she had to say goodbye to her best friend, Jack. The two had been inseparable since childhood and had been through everything together, from the first day of school to the last day of college. But now, Jack was leaving for a new job in another state, and Emily didn't know how to deal with the pain of losing him.
As Emily got ready for the day, she couldn't help but feel a knot in her stomach. She knew that today was going to be one of the hardest days of her life. She had been trying to prepare for this day for weeks, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't bring herself to accept that Jack was really leaving.
Emily met Jack at their usual coffee shop, and as they sat down, Emily felt a lump forming in her throat. She knew that this was the last time they would be sitting here together. They ordered their usual drinks and began talking about everything and nothing. They reminisced about old times and talked about their hopes for the future, but all the while, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling of impending loss.
As they finished their drinks, Jack looked at Emily with a sadness in his eyes that she had never seen before. "Em, I don't know how to say this, but I don't want to leave you," he said. Emily felt tears welling up in her eyes as she nodded her head. She knew that Jack had to follow his dreams, but that didn't make the pain any less.
As they walked out of the coffee shop, Emily felt her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that this was it, the moment she had been dreading for weeks. Jack turned to her and hugged her tightly, and as he did, Emily felt her tears flowing freely. She didn't want to let go of him, but she knew that she had to.
As they pulled away from each other, Jack took Emily's hand and looked her straight in the eye. "I want you to know that no matter where I go, or what I do, you will always be my best friend," he said. Emily nodded her head, too choked up to say anything. She hugged Jack one last time before turning and walking away.
Emily walked home in a daze, her mind consumed with thoughts of Jack. She knew that she would never find another friend like him, and that the pain of losing him would stay with her for a long time. She went home and curled up on the couch, staring blankly at the TV screen. She couldn't bring herself to do anything, not even cry.
As the days passed, Emily tried to get back to her routine, but everything seemed different without Jack. The coffee shop that they used to frequent seemed empty, and the streets that they used to walk down seemed lonely. Emily tried to distract herself by spending time with her other friends, but no one could fill the void that Jack had left.
One day, as Emily was walking down the street, she saw a familiar figure walking towards her. It was Jack! Emily couldn't believe her eyes. Jack had come back to visit her! Emily ran towards Jack and hugged him tightly, tears streaming down her face.
"I missed you so much," Emily said, as Jack hugged her back. "I missed you too," Jack replied, with a smile on his face.
As they caught up on each other's lives, Emily realized that even though Jack was physically gone, he was always with her in her heart. She knew that their friendship was strong enough to withstand any distance or time apart. And even though saying goodbye.
