The Ocean's Deep

In Fear and Love

By Sam GranaPublished 4 years ago Updated 4 years ago 3 min read
How long shall I wait?

Two lovers rendevous amidst the ocean, gazing upon one another in the moonlight. She stood upon the sands of the beach while he waded above the waters of the deep.

He implored her to come out further, but she hesitated with an abundance of reasonings. He saw that she was withering with the tides while being sustained by its ebb and flow. The distance between them grew greater, yet he still called out to her.

"It's safe here. It's warm and there's ground." She explained.

"Where you swim, there's no bottom. It's endless, uncertain and unsafe. If I go too deep, I could get lost, even die. Why can't you just come to me, where we can both be simple and free?"

"What is death but fear in the head replacing hope in the heart?" He replied.

"There's so much you haven't seen that I have and the more I do see, the less we understand one another. I can swim so far and for so long and the deeper I go, the more incredible the view! What experiences we could be building together. You can't believe the things I've seen because you won't trust me to show you. All you have to do is come with me and you refuse. How can you live fully when you fear so much, that you experience so little? I surface to share and you listen, but can't understand. Am I to deprive myself of the mysteries of life to die on the shoreline with you?"

As the days passed, the distance between them grew further and one day, she decided to take a chance and a dive, but not before waiting for him to resurface to guide her below. Alas, his wanderlust kept him from returning and her fear that he might be gone forever became a reality. After 7 days of waiting on the shoreline, she decided to dive on her own, into the great aquatic abyss. She traversed until no sand could be felt beneath her toes and could only swim. The fatigue was felt and there were times when getting to more solid ground seem appealing, but she persevered and eventually felt the compulsion to go deeper. It was then that she took a breath and dove straight into the darkness.

As she descended, the cold became more apparent and effective. Her thoughts began to work against her as she struggled with her many senses, becoming scared and numb. Persisting and pushing through the urge to surface, but with no sight or feeling in her body, the fear of death became an acceptance thereof. It was then that she felt a sudden, yet familiar embrace. She went limp and could feel herself being pulled downward. A light became more apparent, gradually illuminating a great many things. Penetrating through what seemed to be a giant bubble, she was brought into a space, where gently he set her down upon a softer ground and she was able to breath again, this time being able to take in the sights that were there to behold. Along side her was her love, looking upon her with a sense of pride in his eyes.

They spent much time in that space, observing and discussing the abounding visions, of things newly realized and recently remembered. The desire to surface had prompted her to depart from that place, but not without her love, nor for very long. Together, they would travel to and fro, above and below, in unity and cycles, in rhythmic motions between the surety of the surface and the mysteries of the ocean's deep.
