The New History of Dragon

Dragon Story

By Christina SweatPublished 4 years ago 5 min read

There weren’t always dragons in the valley, I would say there weren’t many dragons in the world since the last war so many years ago, which almost wiped out the humans. The history books made it seem like the dragons, monsters and the unknown areas were the most dangerous things out in the world, but I knew better. Before we begin this tale of mystery, adventure and the shift of a new world’s order I would like to introduce myself. Hi, I’m Genevieve Athens, I’m sixteen years old and I come from a family of merchants and travelers.

To start off this tale of my new life I should tell you about my home. I live in the Village of the Lost Arts. We are the only village that uses lost arts, such as gathering raw materials by hand, making things by hand, traveling to sell the wares we have and returning home to start again. The village has prospered a lot from this process and we all live day to day comfortably, not poor but not wealthy either. In this village of about two hundred and fifty people and we’re getting by happily. Within this village it’s my family's job to travel to deliver the wares, collect money and to locate new potential selling spots. I have to say this is the best job in the village. We are a family of three, we have dark hair, sky blue eyes and light brown skin. We have been doing this job for three generations and now its finally my turn to do my first task alone and make my village proud. My mom packs my wagon with the wares and some food as my dad is goes over the route I need to take and what to do if I encounter a stranger. All of this I know very well since they have been teaching me this trade since I was five years old. Once that is done, I am all set to leave just as dawn breaks. Now that you know where this wonderful story starts lets move a ahead to the journey. My first trip was going great. I didn’t run into any robbers, there weren’t any fights on the road and the day has just begun with a wonderfully warm sun. Suddenly, there was a roar so loud and so close that it shook the ground. This scares my horse so badly that we start flying down the road, past trees and shrubs until we get to a mass tree stump that I was so sure I was going to crash into. I pull and call for my horse to stop or at least turn, after a hard yank on the reins, he finally turns sharply to where we slide to a stop and softly bounce off a group of shrubs. I quickly go and check on all the merchandise, worried there would be broken or damaged good, by the time I was finished checking everything, I started to wonder what kind of animal would make such a loud noise, things were fine and quiet now. I decided to go find and out, not smart I know. As I go deep and deeper into the woods I found full grown trees broken in half, burned grass and shrubs, and what looks like a box with a broken lock on it. I pick up the box and continue on, hoping to return it who ever lost it. Suddenly I come face to face with a very large snout that was breathing hard. I screamed and fall to the ground then started to back up more in fear. As I move backwards, I see it’s a dragon. It’s body was covered with black scales with golden eyes and crescent moon shaped horns.

Now I know what you're thinking, “it couldn't be a dragon they’ve have been dead for years” or “are you sure it's a dragon?” and “why haven’t you run away yet?” Well remember how I said, "there weren’t many" dragons, I was referring to the three to five that have gone into hiding to survive the knights and holy kingdom’s extermination. Yet here is one, right in front of me watching me. Just as I start to freak out about this huge dragon in front of me it asked, "are you going to try to kill me too?" The dragon's voice oddly sounded female but she continued,” I will not make it easy but I would rather not fight or die." I stare in shock as I get to my feet forgetting the box on the ground. " I don’t fight, cant really, I’m a peaceful person. Are you ok?" I asked but in my mind I mentally shake me head “obviously she isn’t ok.” The dragon sighs but gives a soft huff like laugh, "no. I believe I am about to go in to the afterlife. I don’t want to but it is my time." She sounded so tired and sad as she lays her head on the ground. I sigh as I felt bad for her but I knew I couldn't do anything, "I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do to ease your mind?" I asked not really thinking she could think of anything in her weakened state but she looks at me then the box. "Yes. In that box is my last creation in this world what’s inside is very fragile and needs warmth. Do you think you can care for it in my absence?" She asked with some hope in her voice while I curiously looked at the box then picked it up. "I will do my best for you as your last wish." the dragon smiles. "Thank you, I am forever grateful to you and for that I want to give you a gift. Come closer," she said as a matter of fact while I come closer to her. She groans in pain as she moves her humongous claws to me and holds out a necklace with a bright red and blue gems incased in a golden chain. I accepted it, speechless at its beauty when the dragon speaks again, "Once you put it on you must never take it off. It will hopefully make your life easier." She gives a tired smile and I bow to her saying, “Thank you its very beautiful but I have to go now or I will be late. " The dragon sighs almost as if she is having troubles breathing as she closes her eyes. "Then please...have a...safe...trip" she tells me almost silently and I turn, leaving her to rest in peace for the final time. I knew she wasn't going to make it, it made me sad that she spent her last dying breathes on me but, I hoped she was going to a good place with all the other dragons. I make my way to my wagon and put the box and the necklace in the storage area then continued on the route thinking of what I should do with the box and the necklace.
