A Bizarre Rebirth on the Brink of Life and Death

Mei's heart skipped a beat. The familiar and pungent aroma was so strong that it seemed to urge her to explore its source. She hesitated for a moment, torn between going straight to the bathroom to wash away her fatigue and following the scent to discover its secret.

Somehow, her feet uncontrollably moved towards the room. The door was slightly ajar, and she gently pushed it open. A dim yellow light and a strong scent greeted her. The room was stacked with various bottles and jars, and each container had a label on it. What startled Mei the most was that all the labels had her name written on them. There was also a spread-out folder on the table, covered with information about her: her photos, her personal details, even the shopping receipts she had carelessly discarded were neatly taped there.

Her heart began to race, and an ominous预感 filled her, making it difficult for her to breathe. She wanted to run away, but her curiosity and fear froze her feet. She finally realized that this man knew her far beyond the normal limits. She flipped through the files, until a clipping made her blood freeze - a news article about a missing girl who looked strikingly similar to her, and the place where she went missing was this remote villa area.

Tears of fear blurred Mei's vision. She suddenly realized the damp palm of Zhan Yue was not a sign of紧张, but a trace of crime. She finally understood that she might have fallen into a trap carefully laid by a madman.

She had to escape. Mei quietly returned to the corridor, afraid that her footsteps would disturb the sleeping demon. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, and every step felt like walking on shards of glass.

"Mei, where are you?" Zhan Yue's voice came from downstairs, sounding calm and kind, but to Mei, it was like the call of the Grim Reaper.

She couldn't answer, so she quickly hid in a storage room, praying he wouldn't find her. Zhan Yue's footsteps gradually approached, and Mei's heart was about to jump out of her chest.

"Mei, I know you're here. Don't be afraid," Zhan Yue's voice sounded outside the door. Mei bit her lip tightly, desperately suppressing her breath.

After what seemed like an eternity of minutes, Zhan Yue's footsteps gradually faded away. Mei waited, until she was sure he had left, before she quietly opened the door, looking for an opportunity to escape.

She crept downstairs, hiding in the shadows to observe. Zhan Yue was standing with his back turned to her, beside the fireplace, seemingly lost in thought. Mei moved cautiously, step by step, towards the front door leading to freedom. Just as she was about to touch the doorknob, Zhan Yue's voice spoke again, cold and slow.

"Mei, do you really want to leave me like this?"

Her heart ached. The voice that had once made her heart flutter now only filled her with fear. Without turning back, she suddenly opened the door and rushed into the darkness outside.

In the darkness, Mei was like a moth seeking the light, sprinting down the path of the unknown. She didn't know if she could escape, but she knew that only by running away did she have a chance of survival.

Mei's heart seemed to jump up to her throat, and the wild drumbeat echoed in her ears. In Zhan Yue's gaze, there was a hint of barely perceptible panic, quickly replaced by a concealed calmness. In the dim light, the rope in his hand stood out oddly, like a silent snake, foretelling doom.

"What did you see?" Zhan Yue's voice was low and powerful, as if he was trying to maintain his composure.

Mei's lips were dry, and she tried to speak, but her voice was trapped like a riverbed in drought, unable to flow. Her mind spun rapidly, searching for a reasonable explanation, a reason to escape. However, the dilated eye, full of resentment and reluctance, seemed to lock her sanity firmly in chains.

"You... you..." Mei finally managed to squeeze out a few words, but her voice was so weak that it was almost inaudible.

"Mei, you shouldn't be here." Zhan Yue's voice held a hint of helplessness, and the rope in his hand swayed gently. "I don't want to hurt you, but you know too much."

The air in the room seemed to solidify, and Mei felt an invisible weight pressing down on her. An urge to run away surged through her, but her body was frozen in place. She thought of the box, the one with the stench of decay, and the open eye. What did all this mean?

Zhan Yue seemed to see through Mei's fear. His steps moved slowly forward, each one heavy on Mei's heart. "I will tell you the truth, Mei. But first, I need your promise that you won't tell anyone about tonight."

Mei didn't know if she could make such a promise. However, her curiosity and deeper trust in Zhan Yue overcame her fear. She nodded, even though she wasn't sure if it was the right choice.

Seeing this, Zhan Yue let go of the rope in his hand and sighed. He walked to the box and forcibly opened the lid. Mei held her breath as she saw that the box contained not just an eye, but a complete human body, immersed in some liquid that seemed to preserve it from decay.

"She was my sister, once." Zhan Yue's voice suddenly choked. "She suffered from a rare disease that gradually hardened her body, leaving her unable to move. I searched for every medical method, but nothing worked. The only thing that could slow down the progression of the disease was this special oil. It's a secret recipe from our family that kept her body supple and prolonged her life."

Mei was unable to speak at this point, her heart filled with complex emotions. Fear, pity, shock, doubt... for a moment, she didn't know what to do. She looked at Zhan Yue, and his eyes were full of sadness and helplessness.

"Do you understand now? I didn't harm anyone. I was just trying to protect my only family member." Zhan Yue's voice was low, filled with excuses.

Mei slowly approached the body immersed in the liquid, looking at the still-open eye, and she finally understood the resentment and reluctance. She turned back, gave Zhan Yue a deep look, and ultimately decided to keep this secret.

However, what Mei didn't know was how this decision would affect her fate, her relationship with Zhan Yue, and the ordinary daily life she had come to believe in. As the night grew deeper, the secret in the room spread like a thick fog, tightly enclosing this small world.

The man's gaze was no longer the gentle one that woke Mei's smile every day, but an unreadable gloom, like the bottomless darkness of an abyss, where all warmth and kindness were replaced by icy resentment.

Zhan Yue's movements were rude and forceful. Mei's body was tightly bound by the rope, and her heart pounded疯狂地 in her chest, filled with fear and confusion. He knelt before the decaying box, as if performing a dark ritual. He spoke to Mei, and also to himself, as those suppressed memories emerged like ghosts from the darkness.

"Zhan Yue and Xiaoxue have known each other since childhood..." His voice was mixed with a hint of crying, an anguish that Mei had never heard before.

Zhan Yue's memories were like a tragic script, with a plot that unfolded but no one could change the tragic ending. His voice trembled with pain, echoing in the dim room, and Mei felt an unprecedented chill. He recounted the decline of Xiaoxue's family and his helpless struggle, a tragedy of the adult world where two young hearts were cruelly torn apart.

"We had decided to get married after graduating from university." Zhan Yue's voice suddenly became hoarse, as if each word was squeezed out from the depths of his throat. "But my father wanted me to marry a woman who was beneficial to the family. I couldn't resist the pressure from the family, and Xiaoxue couldn't abandon her crazy mother. We missed our best time."

His words were filled with endless regret and anguish. Mei felt her heart tightly gripped, as those words seemed to heavily pound on her chest. Although she was afraid, although she didn't understand Zhan Yue's madness, her heart involuntarily felt sorrow for him.

"Later, Xiaoxue's mother died, and we secretly got together again. She didn't ask for any title, she just hoped I could occasionally accompany her." Zhan Yue's voice fluctuated, mixed with sadness and anger. "But my wife eventually learned about our secret meetings. She brought people to insult and beat Xiaoxue... and then, Xiaoxue left this world."

Mei's tears flowed unconsciously. Even though she was tied up and afraid of this man who had lost his sanity, her heart was deeply touched by his story. Suddenly, Zhan Yue stood up and forcibly pushed open the lid of the box. The inside was so deformed that it was difficult to look at. The eyes were staring open, as if telling the unwillingness and anger of their previous life.

"Look, aren't you very much alike? But you're much darker than Xiaoxue." Zhan Yue's voice contained a kind of madness, and his fingers gently stroked the rotten flesh and maggots. His gaze was filled with intricate emotions.

Mei was completely overwhelmed by fear, and she could hardly breathe. She realized that Zhan Yue had completely collapsed in sadness and pain. He had taken her for Xiaoxue, and all his love, hate, and pain were being unleashed at this moment.

Mei knew that she had to find an opportunity to escape. She tried to calm herself down, no longer looking directly at the terrifying corpse, but focusing her gaze on Zhan Yue, trying to find a glimmer of sanity in this mad man that she could communicate with.

"Zhan Yue, I heard your story." Her voice remained calm, "You loved Xiaoxue, not me. I'm not her, I'm Mei. I can feel your sadness, but this is not the way to solve the problem."

Zhan Yue's movements stuttered for a moment, and a flash of confusion passed through his eyes. Mei knew that this might be her only chance.

"Let me go, Zhan Yue. Let me leave. I will always remember your story. But what you need is not revenge, but reconciliation. What you want is not sympathy, but atonement." Mei's voice became firm, her eyes locking onto Zhan Yue's, and her words were strong and resolute.

His hand trembled, slowly letting go of the rotten flesh. A glimmer of clarity appeared in Zhan Yue's eyes, his breathing became rapid, and he appeared hesitant and struggling.

"You're right, Mei." Zhan Yue's voice lowered, "I... I should let go."

In this critical moment, Mei saw hope, and a surge of courage emerged in her heart. This man, who had once been gentle and kind, had lost his way in pain and darkness. And she, perhaps, could be the faint beacon of light that guides him back to the light.

Mei's heart pounded, her eyes widened, staring at the scene in front of her. She had never imagined that the last moment of her life would be so terrifying and absurd. Zhan Yue's figure appeared distorted and horrifying in the moonlight, his facial expression like he was being choked by the deepest fear, unable to breathe.

In this enclosed space, everything appeared exceptionally clear. Mei could feel the heavy blend of bloody and decaying odors in the air, the scent of death, the breath of despair. She had imagined a thousand deaths, but never like this. She knew she was innocent, just an ordinary person who looked like someone else.

Zhan Yue's plan was obvious. He wanted to resurrect his lover, even if it meant using the darkest sorcery to bring her back to life in another body. Mei had heard that ancient sorcery often rested on pain and sacrifice. And now, she was the chosen sacrifice.

"You, what exactly are you going to do?" Mei finally summoned her courage and asked in a weak but firm voice.

Zhan Yue's voice suddenly became gentle, as if recalling a tender past, "Xiaoxue, she was everything to me. I can't lose her, I can't. You wouldn't understand, this pain, this longing."

A wry smile appeared on Mei's lips. She understood Zhan Yue's madness, but this understanding did not alleviate her fear at this moment. She tried to move her body, but the ropes seemed to be rooted, tightly binding her. Her heart was filled with a desire for freedom, even if it was for the last time.

Just then, Zhan Yue turned his head back. There was no more madness in his eyes, replaced by a deep fear.

Xiaoxue's body moved. No, she should no longer be considered a corpse. Her limbs moved awkwardly, like a newborn fawn, tottering, with every step carrying unspeakable pain. And with every movement, the oil from her body seemed to be a mark proving her existence, etched onto the cold ground.

"No, don't come, don't come!" Zhan Yue's voice was filled with panic, and his sanity had completely collapsed at this moment.

Mei felt a strange comfort. Maybe she wouldn't die alone. Maybe she could find a flaw in this monster's grasp.

Zhan Yue stumbled, as if fleeing an unbeatable enemy. He frantically twisted the doorknob, the door that should have led to freedom now seemed like the entrance to hell.

Xiaoxue's movements suddenly became rapid. Her body, driven by an irresistible force, lunged towards Zhan Yue. Their bodies tangled on the ground, and Zhan Yue's screams pierced the silence of the night. The sounds gradually faded until, in the end, there was only a deathly silence.

A complex emotion rose in Mei's heart. Fear, relief, sympathy, and anger were intertwined, making it difficult for her to breathe. She looked at Zhan Yue lying there still, and Xiaoxue's body no longer moving. The black bottle lay still beside them, mocking the futility of everything.

Moonlight poured through the narrow window, casting a gloomy glow on the room. In that moonlight, Mei saw hope, hoping that her life would not end here. She began to struggle, each movement like a struggle against death. She was unwilling to give up.

As time passed by the minute, her wrists gradually bled from the friction of the ropes, but Mei did not stop. Finally, the ropes loosened, and her wrists were free. She could hardly believe it, but she knew she had to act, she had to escape this terrible place.

She quickly untied the ropes on her feet and staggered to her feet, moving step by step towards the door. She didn't dare to look back at the two still bodies, afraid that she would be frozen in fear.

When Mei finally walked out of that door and breathed in the fresh air, tears slid down her face. It was her desire for life, her cherishing of freedom.

She didn't know what to do next, but she knew that no matter how uncertain the future was, she would cherish her life because she knew that in the darkness, there was always light waiting.

Mei moved her body, and every step felt like stepping on the cold truth. That scene was cruelly imprinted in her mind, corroding her soul like strong acid. Xiaoxue's corpse and Zhan Yue's flesh were fused, no longer two separate existences, but a pile of grotesque, undescribable shredded meat. The air was filled with the scent of blood and decay, as if time had frozen in this moment.

Mei sat there, her body stiff, her thoughts as fragmented as a devoured corpse. Her breathing was heavy and slow, as if each breath required all her strength. Her eyes were hollow, without focus, but gradually, as time passed, she began to regain a sense of clarity. She untied the bindings on her own body, her fingers trembling slightly. With each knot undone, the fear in her heart diminished.

The process of calling the police was like a nightmare replay for Mei. Her voice was calm to the point of having no emotion, but the officer on the other end of the line could sense the heaviness transmitted through the receiver. After hanging up, she was alone in this enclosed space, waiting for rescue to arrive and for all this to end.

And for Mei, the end of this nightmare was a new beginning. She later learned that Xiaoxue's dying wish was for Zhan Yue to divorce, and in a heated argument, Zhan Yue accidentally choked her to death. Zhan Yue's supposed witchcraft was merely an attempt to bind Xiaoxue's soul to Mei's body, hoping to avoid the dead woman's revenge. But the results of the witchcraft were unexpected. Although Mei narrowly escaped death, she ultimately survived in a way that could almost be described as a "rebirth". The pallor of her skin was no longer a color of death, but a new chapter of life.

As Mei recounted this past event, her expression was轻松, even with a hint of self-mocking smile, as if she had already cast that dark past aside. She believed that with time, all恐怖 and痛苦 would fade away.

But when I heard this story, my heart could not calm down. I asked in confusion, "How is Mei now?"

My friend's answer left me with an indescribable chill. He told me that when he bid farewell to Mei, he noticed the red spots on her hands. Those spots, although small, were strikingly visible, and they were the marks of death - lividity.

My exclamation echoed in the air, while my friend's face wore a hint of sadness. He said that he had chosen not to point out those lividity marks because some truths perhaps should never be revealed. He had investigated the news at the time but found no records. Through a local police friend, he learned that the case had been classified as suspicious due to its bizarre nature. Two corpses were indeed found at the scene, one male and the other a highly decayed female corpse.

As for Mei, whether she was still the same Mei, no one could know. But my friend said that as long as Mei could continue to live well as an ordinary person, that was enough. His job was simply to record this incident, to document an unknown corner of the world.

The truth of the story, like the bizarre case, remained hidden in the shadows, and I understood that some things, even in the bright sunshine of the day, could not escape the shroud of night. Mei's smile, those red spots, and my friend's silence all reminded me that there were always mysteries in this world that could never be solved.
