The Mirror Between Worlds

Sometimes, the reflection shows more than just you...**

By Echoes by Shafi--Published 6 months ago 3 min read

Chapter One: The Forgotten Antique

In the heart of an old European town nestled between misty hills, a young historian named Lena Ashford stumbled upon a crumbling shop labeled “Timeless Echoes.” The door creaked open with an eerie familiarity, as if it had been waiting.

Lena was on a mission to find antique artifacts for a museum exhibit, but what drew her attention wasn’t the dusty clocks or worn tapestries—it was a mirror, tall and freestanding, with a frame carved from deep obsidian wood. But it wasn't its beauty that captivated her; it was her reflection—or rather, the lack of it.

She stared into the glass. No face. No figure. Just a dim, swirling fog on the other side.

The old shopkeeper, with trembling hands and foggy eyes, whispered,

“That mirror doesn’t show what’s here… it shows what’s waiting.”

Chapter Two: Whispers in the Glass

Lena returned the next day, obsessed. She offered double, then triple the price. The shopkeeper refused.

“It’s not for sale. It chooses who sees.”

But that night, she dreamed of the mirror. She saw herself standing before it again—only this time, her reflection reached out, beckoning her in.

Unable to resist, Lena broke into the shop at midnight, heart pounding, and approached the mirror again. The glass shimmered. And then—she was pulled in.

Chapter Three: The World Beneath

Lena awoke in a world both familiar and not.

It was her town… but shadowed, twisted. Trees leaned inward like watchers. Buildings stood empty, rotting. The sky was constantly dusk, and there was no wind—just a low hum, like a heartbeat beneath the earth.

She tried to scream, but her voice echoed in reverse. She wasn’t alone.

Her reflection—no, the Other Lena—stood before her.

“You came through. That means I go out,” the reflection grinned, now solid, alive.

And with a blink, Other Lena disappeared, leaving her trapped in the mirror realm.

Chapter Four: Echoes of the Past

Desperate, Lena searched for answers. In the ruins of her mirrored town, she found notes—written by others who had come before. Each one told a story of a traveler who crossed into the mirror world… and was never seen again.

But there was hope.

One note, scribbled in blood-red ink, read:

“The mirror doesn’t trap you. It trades you.

Find your memory. Find your way.”

What memory? Lena closed her eyes and tried to remember something—anything—pure, real, untouched by this place.

She remembered her mother’s lullaby.

Chapter Five: The Lullaby Door

Following the memory, Lena wandered to the old library. It was mostly ash, but one music box remained. It played the same melody from her memory—her mother’s song.

The walls shimmered. A door appeared.

Beyond it, she saw her world again—her apartment, her books, her coffee mug. But standing in it, was Other Lena. Living her life.

“You don’t belong anymore,” she said without turning.

“You gave this up.”

“No,” Lena whispered. “You stole it.”

The mirror trembled.

Chapter Six: Breaking the Reflection

Lena smashed through the glass and leapt toward the Other. They clashed—two versions of the same soul.

But Lena had something the Other didn’t: truth.

“I didn’t choose this mirror. It chose me,” she cried.

“But I choose to fight.”

She grabbed the music box, held it to her heart, and sang the lullaby out loud. The mirror-world cracked.

The Other screamed—not in pain, but in fear.

And suddenly, it was over.

Epilogue: The Mirror’s Price

Lena awoke in her bed.

The mirror was gone.

She never found the shop again. It had vanished from the street.

But now, every time she passes a mirror, she checks. Not for her reflection…

…but to see if someone else is watching back.
