The Memory Thief

The decision to make

By Henry LucyPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

*The Memory Thief*

As Ava followed The Shadow through the winding streets of Somnium, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The city seemed to be shifting and twisting around her, like a living, breathing entity.

They eventually arrived at a small, unassuming shop tucked away in a quiet alley. The sign above the door read "Memories and More."

The Shadow pushed open the door and gestured for Ava to enter. She hesitated for a moment, but her curiosity got the better of her.

Inside the shop, Ava found herself surrounded by rows of shelves filled with strange and exotic objects. There were vintage clocks, rare books, and even a taxidermied owl perched on a nearby shelf.

The Shadow led her to a small room in the back of the shop, where a single chair sat facing a large, ornate mirror.

"Sit down, Ava," The Shadow said, his voice low and hypnotic. "It's time for you to see the true power of memories."

Ava felt a shiver run down her spine as she sat down in the chair. The Shadow began to speak, his words weaving a spell of hypnotic suggestion.

As Ava gazed into the mirror, she saw her own reflection staring back at her. But as she looked deeper, she began to see memories rising to the surface like bubbles in a pond.

She saw herself as a child, playing with her parents in a sun-drenched park. She saw herself as a teenager, laughing with friends at a summer camp. And she saw herself as a young adult, standing alone on a windswept cliff, feeling the weight of her own uncertainty.

The memories swirled and eddied, like a maelstrom pulling her down into its depths. Ava felt herself becoming lost in the currents of her own mind.

And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything stopped. The memories froze, like a photograph snapped in the instant before a moment of truth.

Ava blinked, feeling a sense of disorientation. The Shadow stood before her, a small smile playing on his lips.

"You see, Ava," he said, "memories are not just recollections of the past. They are the building blocks of our very selves. And with the right tools, the right techniques, we can shape and mold those memories to create new realities."

Ava felt a sense of wonder, mixed with a dash of fear. She knew that she had stumbled into something much bigger than herself, something that could change the course of her life forever.

"What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The Shadow's smile grew wider. "I want you to join me, Ava. I want you to help me unlock the secrets of the human mind. Together, we can create new worlds, new realities. We can be the masters of our own destinies."

Ava felt a sense of temptation, a sense of possibility. She knew that she had a choice to make, a choice that would determine the course of her life forever.

Would she join The Shadow, and embark on a journey into the unknown? Or would she turn back, and return to the safety of her old life?

The decision was hers, and hers alone.

I'm not sure I'm interested," she said, trying to sound firm.

Ah, but you are interested," he said. "I can see it in your eyes. You're curious, Ava. You're curious about the secrets of the human mind and you're curious about what I can offer you."

Ava felt a sense of trepidation. She knew that she was curious but she also knew that she shouldn't trust The Shadow.

"I'm not going to join you," she said finally, trying to sound firm.

The Shadow's smile faltered and he stood up, his eyes flashing with anger.

"Very well," he said. "But know this, Ava. You're making a big mistake. A mistake that you will regret for the rest of your life."

And with that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Ava feeling shaken and unsure of what to do next.
