"The Man Who Borrowed Time: A Gripping Tale of Fate and Consequence"

Fiction

Liam sat in the dimly lit café, stirring his col—or maybe it was just his anxiety playing tricks on him. He was waiting for someone, someone he wasn’t sure even existed.

A week ago, a stranger had slipped a note under his apartment door:

"I can give you more time. Meet me at the Eclipse Café. Midnight."

At first, he thought it was a joke. But Liam was desperate. His mother was dying in a hospital bed, and his own life was a mess. Bills piled up, deadlines loomed, and no matter how much he worked, time kept slipping through his fingers.

So here he was, waiting.

The bell above the café door jingled, and a tall man in a dark suit walked in. He had an air of calm authority, like someone who had seen centuries pass. He sat across from Liam and placed a small, silver hourglass on the table.free absentmindedly. The clock on the wall ticked louder than usual

"You’re late," the man said.

Liam swallowed. "Are you the one who sent the note?"

The man nodded. "You need time, Liam. And I can give it to you—for a price."

Liam's breath caught. "What kind of price?"

The man smirked. "Simple. I give you extra hours in your day. In exchange, when your time is up, you return those hours… with interest."

Liam frowned. "Interest?"

"Every hour you take now will cost you two in the future. Borrow wisely."

Liam hesitated. This was insane. Impossible. But something about the man’s tone, the strange shimmer in the hourglass, made him believe.

"How do I know this is real?"

The man flipped the hourglass. A strange warmth flooded Liam’s veins. The world around him slowed. The café’s clock froze mid-tick. Outside, rain hung in the air, motionless.

"You now have an extra hour today," the man said. "Imagine what you could do with more."

Liam’s mind raced. He could stay with his mother longer, finish his work, fix his life.

"I want more," he whispered.

The man slid the hourglass toward him. "Flip it whenever you need time."

Liam barely noticed the man leave. He was too busy watching the world move normally again.

For weeks, Liam thrived. He had all the time in the world—until the bill came due.

One night, as he flipped the hourglass again, something was different. His reflection in the café window looked older. Lines creased his face. His hands shook.

Then, the man reappeared. "Debt collectors have arrived," he said.

Liam turned, but the café was empty. Shadows slithered across the floor, creeping toward him. His heartbeat pounded in his ears.

"You borrowed too much, Liam," the man sighed. "Now, time takes you."

The shadows swallowed him whole.

And the hourglass remained, waiting for its next borrower.
