I have lost track of the days since our world was forever changed by the sea. Some say that this is the second Genesis, others think this happened because the world is always changing, but no this was all humanities doing. The polar ice caps that once kept our planet cool have all melted! Little did I know during that one hot summer life was never going to be same. I still remember the day it happened, while we were all sleeping, we woke to streets flooded with water. My parents thought it was an unexpected rainstorm but as we turned on the news we were shocked to see that Wilmington was gone as it was engulfed by the sea. Soon after that New York City was about 50 feet underwater, that was when the bitter truth came into the light that this was the end. I knew it wouldn’t be long until my hometown Fairhope would soon face the same fate. I wasn’t the only one thinking that as well, my parents were too. There was so much stress and anxiety racing through my mind I was wondering how are we all going to continue to live. My father could not stop pacing back and forth as the clock was ticking and by the time he came up with a solution I was afraid we would already drown by then. But it was obvious what we would do…we need a boat. I know what he was thinking if we are going to survive we have no choice but to steal a boat. At this point it was every man for itself and it was live or die at this point. My father made the choice and even though my mother was hesitant at first she knew there was no other option.

Just as we were about to say goodbye to our home for good and head to the marina to steal a yacht my mother had one last surprise for me. She gave me a heart shaped locket and inside was a picture of her and dad, it was supposed to be my 18th birthday present. She said “if anything happens to us Cordelia just remember you will always have a piece of us forever.” I felt like I was gonna cry when she gave it to me but, I had to hold back my tears and stay strong for her.

It’s still unbelievable that I’m finally able to write my story in this little notebook and its been almost 3 years since our world was gone. Girls like me my age should be in college studying day and night, going to frat parties and getting waisted. But no me and my dad are fighting day and night to stay alive. I can’t help but worry all the time now for him because, I know he has not been the same since mom went overboard during a freak tropical storm. I loved my mom with all my heart and I wish she could still be with us but, I know she is in a better place and she is not suffering by living day and night on this boat. I almost feel like I am sometimes living "Life of Pi" but there was no tiger to company on this endless voyage. It was just me and my dad against the raging sea.

It’s unbelievable we finally could have some hope at last. While me and dad were rummaging through another abandoned boat, he came across a logbook. The logbook contained several entries of an island that was not too far from where we were at. Whoever was last on this boat states that there is no one on that island and that it was unsustainable. Even though it said it was unlivable we thought what have we got to lose and we should take this chance. When the earth was consumed by water only a few pieces of land remained, and those that managed to find them would fight to the bitter end to preserve and keep the land for themselves. Those that claimed the land were in constant fear that they would be overpopulated and make life unsustainable than it already was. But this island no one had claimed it yet and now me and my dad are on course to get there as fast as we can before someone else does.

However, we were not alone in the sea as there was always the growing fear of being attacked by a predator when we least expected it. When the land was gone more undiscovered marine life soon began to emerge from the deep dark watery depths. There were times when we ran into another group of survivors, and they would tell us of a giant serpent that had razor sharp teeth with claws. It almost resembled a giant moray eel but was more reptilian. We assume that was what happened to the person that was on that boat and that he met his fate with the monster. It only hunts at night though so as soon as the sun went down all our lights had to go off or we would risk attracting the monsters. I am not just afraid of these gruesome beasts that lurk in the murky depths, but I am more afraid that I could lose my dad too. If I lost him too, I do not know what I would do.

We are almost to the island, and I can hardly wait to see it and make this place our new home. I am just hoping no one has already claimed it and we would have to beg again for shelter, or we would risk getting shot at again. During these times I really wish our society had listened to the scientists and environmentalists. Because if our world had taken them more seriously, we would not have lost everything we had and the people we love. I still have hope maybe one day the earths ice caps could one day freeze all over again but, I know the odds of that happening at this point is zero. As me my dad get closer to the island I can only just continue to have my faith that we will be alright.

We finally made it to the island, and it is just breathtaking that this island managed to survive after all this. The island was filled with lush tropical flowers that I thought I would never see again. There was also a large grove of coconut and banana trees that all aligned the shores. We had hit the jackpot at last but, why would someone say in that logbook that this place was unsustainable.

I know that the logbook we discovered a few days ago stated there was no one here on this island. But we should have known that was all a lie too. There was a couple of survivors that we came across on the island. It all made sense the person left that logbook like that in case someone came onboard, and anything happened to him that they would know that there is no point for them to venture to that island. They explained that the man’s name was James and that he left to try and look for more supplies and other survivors that just want to live peacefully. I have no idea what its going to be like for me and my dad now that we have found a place to call home again. But I wonder what my life will be like as I continue to watch the light that meets the sea and wonder what new troubles we could face beyond the horizon in the growing future.
