The Lesson of the Locked Door

Sometimes love looks like rejection

By Rohitha LankaPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

Sometimes love looks like rejection-until it opens your eyes to the truth - You're leaving this house.

And I don't want you to come back.

That's all he heard.

There was no discussion.

There were no screams.

Just a dry phrase... and the closing of the door.

His grandmother.

She raised him since childhood, and today she threw him out like a stranger.

The grandfather, who saw that scene, passed out.

- What are you doing...? Why are you throwing him out like that..? That's your grandson!

But she didn't say another word.

He turned around and disappeared into the house.

He didn't understand.

Neither did the neighbors.

No one understood it.

The boy started walking aimlessly.

She was wearing the same clothes she had worn to the store that evening.

She was out of money. No cell phone. No keys.

At first it was with a friend.

Do you have a place to stay...?- he asked her.

No... they kicked me out.

Wow... what a shame. But my parents won't let anyone stay here.

And honestly... there's nothing I can do for you.

He kept walking.

Another friend saw him coming.

- Is everything okay...? Did something happen..?

- I'm homeless. Can I stay with you for a few days...?

- And what are you going to do here..? Don't you have any money..? Can't you pay anything..?

- No, nothing.

- Then I'm sorry. You're not allowed in my house.

The boy lowered his head.

And he left.

He looked for his girlfriend.

He hugged her and explained what happened.

She got worried, went to talk to her parents... and came back with a muffled voice.

- They say you can't stay. And there's nothing I can do either.

Sorry, but this won't work anymore. It's not like that.

And he was alone.

Completely alone.

He sat on a chair and looked up at the sky.

Today he had given everything for people who would give him nothing.

Hours passed.

And when he thought no one was looking for him...

His grandfather appeared.

let's go home, he said

He did not want to go

-So then... ? So can they drive me away again..?

- Please believe me. Just come.

He got into the car.

The whole way was complete silence.

When they arrived, his grandmother ran to hug him.

He took a step back.

Then his grandfather sat him down and calmly said to him:

- Your grandmother didn't do it out of cruelty. She did it out of love.

I wanted you to see with your own eyes... who is only with you when you have something to offer.

You thought you were surrounded by friends.

You thought you had a strong relationship.

But she saw things you didn't want to see.

People who used you, took advantage of you... were only there when you gave, but not when you needed them.

And I have to make you see the truth.

The boy started crying.

Grandma came over.

- It broke my heart to do that. But I love you too much to let you believe a lie.

He hugged her.

Strong. Like when I was a child.

And he understood something that words cannot teach.

Morality...

Sometimes the person who loves you the most is the one who shakes you... opens your eyes.

Because when you have it, everyone comes closer.

But when you have nothing, you find out who is worth it.

People who love you... not for what you give, but for who you are.

That truth, even if it hurts, makes you stronger.
