The Legend of the Flying Crocodile

A Haunting Tale from the Albanian Alps

By Keerthana ThirumalairajPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

In the heart of the Albanian Alps, deep in the rugged mountains, there was a small village nestled within the steep valleys. The village was quaint and idyllic, with its cobblestone streets, thatched-roofed houses, and small fields of crops.

But despite its beauty, the villagers lived in fear. For generations, they had told stories of a creature that haunted the mountains above them, a creature that was said to have the power to fly and to change its size at will. The creature was known as the flying crocodile.

The villagers had never seen the creature, but they had heard its haunting screeches in the night, and they had seen its shadow looming over them during the day. They knew that it was only a matter of time before the creature would come down from the mountains and terrorize their village.

One day, a young man named Arben decided to venture into the mountains to find the flying crocodile. He had grown tired of living in fear, and he was determined to prove to the villagers that the creature was nothing more than a myth.

Arben packed his bag with provisions and set out on his journey. He climbed higher and higher into the mountains, braving steep cliffs and treacherous paths. He searched for days, but he found no trace of the creature.

Just when he was about to give up hope, he stumbled upon a cave hidden in the rocks. He cautiously approached the entrance and peered inside. There, in the dim light of the cave, he saw the creature that he had been searching for.

The flying crocodile was unlike anything Arben had ever seen. It was massive, with scales that glimmered in the dim light. Its eyes were like two glowing orbs, and its wings were wide and leathery.

Arben watched in amazement as the creature stretched its wings and took flight, soaring high above the mountains. He knew that he had to capture the creature and bring it back to the village to prove its existence.

He spent days planning his capture, studying the creature's movements and habits. Finally, he put his plan into action. He laid a trap, baiting it with the creature's favorite food.

As he waited for the creature to take the bait, Arben heard the haunting screeches of the flying crocodile. He knew that the creature was getting closer, and he braced himself for what was to come.

Suddenly, the creature appeared in the sky above him, its massive wings beating the air. Arben watched in awe as the creature swooped down towards the bait, its jaws open wide.

Arben sprang into action, quickly closing the trap. The creature struggled against its bonds, but Arben was determined to bring it back to the village.

He carefully carried the creature down the mountain, watching as it shrank in size with each step. By the time he reached the village, the creature had become no bigger than a small lizard.

The villagers gathered around Arben as he presented the creature to them. They were amazed by its beauty, and they marveled at its wings and scales. They finally knew that the legend of the flying crocodile was true.

But their joy was short-lived. As they watched, the creature began to grow in size, its wings spreading wide. It broke free of its bonds and took flight, soaring high above the village.

The villagers watched in horror as the creature circled above them, its haunting screeches filling the air. They knew that they had made a grave mistake in capturing the creature, and that they would never be safe as long as it was free.

Arben watched in despair as the creature disappeared into the mountains, its shadow looming over the village. He knew that he had unleashed a terrible curse upon the village, one that would haunt them for generations to come.

The villagers were never able to capture the flying crocodile again, but they knew that it still lurked in the mountains above them. They warned their children never to venture too far into the mountains, lest they be taken by the creature.

As the years passed, the legend of the flying crocodile became a cautionary tale, a warning to those who would seek to disturb the natural balance of the mountains. And though the villagers lived in fear of the creature, they also respected its power, knowing that it was not to be trifled with.

Arben, meanwhile, was haunted by the memory of the creature he had captured. He knew that he had made a terrible mistake, and that he could never undo the damage he had caused. He spent the rest of his life trying to atone for his mistake, helping the villagers in any way he could.

But the memory of the flying crocodile lingered on, a constant reminder of the power and mystery of the Albanian Alps. And though the villagers may never fully understand the creature that haunted their mountains, they knew that they must always respect it, lest it come down upon them with all its terrible might.
