The wind howled across the empty platform as Emma checked her watch again. 11:58 PM. The train was late, which was odd—this particular line was never late. In fact, no one ever missed the 11:59 train, but she hadn’t seen anyone else waiting. The platform was deserted, bathed in pale yellow light.

Suddenly, a distant rumble grew louder. Emma peered into the darkness, and sure enough, the train was approaching, its headlights piercing through the mist that had mysteriously rolled in. The old locomotive screeched to a stop, doors hissing open. Without hesitation, she stepped inside.

The carriage was eerily silent, seats upholstered in rich velvet that seemed untouched by time. There were no other passengers, just a faint ticking sound, like a clock hidden somewhere within the walls.

As the train pulled away, Emma noticed something unsettling. The scenery outside didn’t seem to move. It was frozen in a perpetual dusk, trees and hills suspended like paintings. She stood up, heart racing, and tried the door at the end of the carriage, but it wouldn’t budge. Panic set in.

Suddenly, a voice crackled through the intercom: "Welcome aboard the Last Train to Nowhere. Your destination will remain... undefined."

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. She turned and saw her own reflection in the window—except it wasn’t her. The woman staring back had her face, her eyes, but was dressed in clothes from another era, a long coat and a tattered hat, eyes full of sorrow. She mouthed something, words Emma couldn’t hear but could somehow feel.

"Stay seated."

The train rattled on, its destination unknown, through a land caught between time and memory. Emma sat down, feeling the weight of eternity settle in.

The clock struck 11:59 PM, and it never moved again.
