The Last Star

Adventure Fantasy

By Arshad MecciPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

In a universe once teeming with stars, it was long believed that the number of stars far outnumbered the souls that had ever inhabited it. However, that notion had become outdated. Most of the stars had perished, extinguished by a force that left entire galaxies in shadow. Yet, whispers persisted among the last remnants of humanity that a few stars still gleamed like diamonds in a vast desert, guiding the souls of those lost in the void. Yet, even these stars faced the encroaching darkness.

Kori, a nimble comet streaking through the cosmic void, was one such troubled soul. She darted through an asteroid field, her glider's light the only beacon in the darkness. Kori was on the run, pursued by a relentless darkness intent on snuffing out her light.

She skillfully navigated her glider through narrow gaps, her pursuer, a formless entity of darkness, crashing heedlessly through obstacles in its path. This creature, born of consumed black holes and planetary remnants, relentlessly pursued Kori.

Desperate to escape, Kori gathered stardust to fuel her exo-suit and glider, stretching her resources thin. She emitted ice clouds from her glider's engine, hoping for a burst of speed. But the darkness was gaining, its chilling breath deforming her suit.

Kori reached for a Luxdux from her belt, charging it with stardust. As she activated it, a blinding light scattered throughout the asteroid field. A fallen star awakened, but its light was quickly smothered by the jaws of the pursuing beast.

Trapped within the creature's form, which was composed of dark matter and the remnants of consumed planets, Kori struggled to breathe. In a desperate move, she overloaded the star with fuel, causing it to burst forth with enough energy to punch through the creature's belly.

As Kori emerged from her ordeal, she found herself adrift among lifeless celestial bodies, wondering how she had survived. Her relief was short-lived as she realized she was still alone.

She remembered the fallen star she had sought, which had led her to that perilous encounter. Retrieving a canister of stardust and a small metal block shaped like an hourglass, she faced a dilemma: use the stardust to power her glider or activate the metal block.

Opting for the latter, she activated the block, which revealed a holographic face. The block consumed much of her stardust, leaving her with less fuel for her glider. The small robot introduced itself as the INTERSTELLAR ROBOTIC INFORMATICAL SYSTEM, or IRIS for short.

Kori was initially taken aback by IRIS's ability to communicate with her telepathically, but soon they established a rapport. As they conversed, Kori learned that IRIS was created to locate stars, a mission that had become increasingly important as stars continued to vanish.

As they journeyed together, Kori and IRIS encountered the remnants of human civilization, including a message from a scientist named Adam Henry DuBois. The message warned of a creature called the Primordium, which had extinguished Earth's light. DuBois urged Kori to find IRIS and the Forge, a source of power that could reignite the stars.

Driven by a newfound purpose, Kori and IRIS set out to find the Forge. Along the way, they faced numerous challenges, including encounters with the encroaching darkness and the dwindling remnants of humanity. Despite the odds, their bond grew stronger, and they faced each challenge together.

Finally, they reached their destination: Methuselah, the Starforge, a celestial body older than the universe itself. The Primordium was close behind, forcing them to hurry. Inside Methuselah's core, Kori and IRIS found the anvil that needed to be powered to reignite the star.

Kori loaded the anvil with stardust, using every last grain she had gathered. As the darkness closed in, IRIS sacrificed himself, transferring his remaining energy to the anvil. In a burst of light, Methuselah was reborn, its light destroying the Primordium and restoring hope to the universe.

On that day, a new star was born, heralding the dawn of a new era. Kori, once a lone wanderer adrift in the cosmic void, had found her purpose and a companion in IRIS. Together, they had reignited the stars and set the universe on a path to renewal.
